Are you talking about the shouldermount hops first, or the fonji afterwards?

OK, so a slight disclaimer: I've never seen anyone do them with straight legs in a straddle like that before.  I learned the Chinese pole way, which is to shouldermount with your body at a 45 degree angle with your legs tucked, and then pulse the legs out straight and back to tucked as you hop up.  You may find that to get your body vertical enough your shouldermount may be on a slightly different place on your shoulder than usual, and therfore hurt.  It should not, however, be all the way over on your collarbone itself.   Also, I imagine doing it with the legs in a straight straddle is much more difficult, because you don't have that pulsing motion to give you the lift, so I would suggest trying it the way I described first, and then later trying it the way Charlee does it.

The only time I tried it, I tried it the Chinese pole way you described.  I can't seem to get enough momentum with the legs and my hand grip doesn't want to loosen.

Are you just loosening and tightening your grip or do your hands do any work as well?

I just went to the pole to try it and make sure I'm telling you the right thing.  There's a timing aspect involed; my hands actually leave the pole for a split second, as my legs pulse out.  I reach up to grab higher on the pole at the peak extension of my legs.  It's almost simultaneous.  I can think of two things that might be going wrong for you: either you may be holding onto the pole instead of moving your hands up it, or else your body may be too horizontal to be giving you much lift from your legs.  Trying filming yourself and seeing what angle your body is at.
