So I’ve seen lots of people doing backward somersaults in floorwork lately and they look amazing. I tried one last night. Baaaad idea. I pulled my left side neck muscle. Ouch! Don’t know why I thought I could do one, couldn’t do it in elementary school gym, either. =) Anyone have any tips or know of a tutorial? If you wanted to break it down into a somersault for dummies level, that would be greatly appreciated. On the up side, I nailed the allegra hold before trying that darned somersault. =)

i think of it more as a plow-over than a somersault but i may be doing something differetn?

if you’re not familiar with yoga moves, this is a plow:

once you get into plow position it’s pretty easy to put your knees down and roll out of it, you can start by going slowly until you get the body placement and figure out what your limbs are doing. i think if you go into it with too much momentum in the beginning you can really mess up your neck!

if your neck isn’t that flexible, you can rollover more to one side rather than straight back (so your path, if you were to do a bunch, isn’t a straight line, but one that curves to one side) to keep your neck more straight. the straighter the rollover the more you need to bend your neck to get your head out of hte way as you roll over.

DEFINITELY talk to fleur about this one- she taught me how to do it and ever since ive been backwards rolling all over the place. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif but definitely talk to her because you dont want to do anything that could damage your body or your shoulders.

I would love to hear about this as well. It is one HOTTTT move and lets a person cover a fair bit of ground without looking like it.

Just make sure to tuck your neck to the opposite side! Take it step by step and you won’t hurt yourself!

As pole champ said tucking your head to the side and rolling over your shoulder is important. Its not like when we were kids and we tried to roll over the back of our head/neck. You cannot roll straight back over the back of your head but more at an angle over the shoulder.

You also need to really stretch and limber up your neck muscles before doing this .
