    hey folks!

i’m pretty confident at both my ordinary and twisted handsprings and i’ve been working on transitions out of them. I’ve seen vids where dancers (way, way, way better than me so this may be a pipedream for me) are doing a spin and then lifting into handspring positions. If that makes sense….

So basically, if anyone can shed any light on this it would be great! one other girl in our studio is confident at this too and despite being a lot stronger and proficient she hasn’t been having much luck either!

    Thanks!

it’s a reverse grab into a TG handspring and the originator of the combo is on this forum- phoenyx… so she is probably the best one to ask, but i will say that i believe you need to be able to do a TG lifted handspring before this will work for you.

    thank you!!

though if ‘lifted’ means i can’t kick up into it i may have a slight problem….. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif

Def keep working on it though! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I didn’t realize that was the same Pheonix on here who did this move! Cool!

I can’t do this one – yet. But from what I’ve been told by those who do you do not need to be able to do a deadlift twisted in order to acheive the combo but you have to have a strong twisted handspring.

A lot of it is about the momentum and the distance you get your body around the pole during the spin. In the early stages you touch your outisde foot down quickly after the reverse grab spin in order to help push up until you learn to do the switch from mid-air.

This practice vid that Starr did may help

As I said above, I understand getting more distance from the pole during the spin may help too.

hm empy i think you’re right– not a deadlift twisted, but i do think you need to be able to do one without kicking.

Yes I agree and that’s part of what I like about this vid as you can see what level of control Starr has with her twisted HS. I guess that’s the word I’m looking for…control.

empy that was a fab vid link – it really shows the move. when i’m doing the TG i swing my leg forward to get momentum so i’ll practice reducing that before i try combining anything… i see many bruises ahead!!

    thanks ladies!

I finally got my TG handspring mount after 5 months of frustrating practice. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif I took Michelle Mynx advance workshop in which she was showing us how to do the TG mount. I told her about my failed attempts at this https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif for the last 5 months and she ask to see my technique. When I showed her I GOT IT. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif I was in total shock https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif and screamed for joy. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif I can’t get it 100 % at each try yet on a 2 inch https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif but I can nail it easily on a 1.75 inch. But after my week of getting this I tweeked something on my rotator https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mad.gif of my shoulder. So I’m laying off this move for a while then I’m off to practice the phoenyx move. And i am lucky that Phoenyx -Shaun is one of our regulars at our monthly Ontario pole jam. I can learn it from the best https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_queen.gif as she invented this move. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I’m trying to get this move too!! I can get halfway up, I thinks its a fear thing because as I spin I get afraid I’m going to miss the pole with my bottom hand! Only tried it a few times, gotta keep at it!

i know what you mean about the fear!!! i’m not a spinner at all – so when i have to do a spin combo i panic!! i’ll probably use more energy doing it than the handspring! Heading studio tonight so should get a chance to get some bruises!

You don’t need to be able to do the twisted handspring lift to do the phoenix spin it all about the momentum of the spin and using the side muscles and leg to push up, i could do the phoenix a long time before i could get the twisted lift i have done a vid its not very good and you might need to turn the volume right up, but this it how i progressed from the baby phoenix to pushing up into it without kicking. I say push because that’s what you do not lift anyway i posted the link https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

There is a variation of the Phoenix that I’ve seen people do, and that I’ve been working on. I call it the "Forward Phoenix". Instead of the reverse grab into ribbon spin with your back to the pole, you do it from a chair spin facing the pole. It’s a lot harder because you don’t have that top twisted grip to help pull you up and it requires tremendous strength from your lower arm. I can do it, but with a sporadic success rate. If anyone knows what I’m trying to explain, do you know the name for it?

I have NOT seen this!!!!!! I can’t wait to try – I can’t do phoenix yet so this *could* be an option and even if I can’t I can’t look any dumber than I already do when I try those moves! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Have you seen the reverse attitude to handspring – I am trying to break this down in my head now – it seems easier.

And I coulda swore I saw an example by Junge Cat, but I can’t seem to find it.
