Good question! In my lessons I suggest dancers learn inverts and also practice dancing on the balls of the feet because it improves balance, and strengthens the calves and feet and also improves leg lines. This makes a dancer more pleasing to watch. I also suggest women learn to invert while on the balls of the feet to help prepare them for wearing heels. Not something most men care to try…most, not all, there are some great male dancers who rock the heels! Anyway, another reason is that starting many moves like the Pole Hold while on the balls of the feet can help prevent jumping on to the pole and reminds students to use strength and control. So, do I think it totally a must, not if the goal is strength building, however if the dance aspect of it intrigues you I would think about incorporating some work while on the toes. 🙂

Imagine a gymnast doing a back tuck.. Now imagine one doing the same move fully extended. Who’s toes were pointed and who looked like they would barely make it over? I feel that the essence of pole dance is that it is a vertical activity. (because the pole goes upwards, right?) To give an appearance of effortless weightlessness once your performance begins, pointed toes are an aesthetic requirement. This is as true for the purely grounded elements of pole dance as it is in men’s ballet. It is even more of a requirement for anything in the air as it extends the lines from the fingertips through the arm, torso, hips, legs, and all the way to the feet. If the toes aren’t pointed, the line stops short, suggesting a forced movement, and appears a bit awkward.

*sigh* The whole pointed toes thing.
Well, yeah, there’s numerous benefits to learning how to point your toes and if you do it right from the get-go it is easier to avoid the habit of flexed feet. HOWEVER, blah, there’s more important things than toes in my humble opinion. Sometimes I wish it wasn’t such a big deal in the pole world as I am the queen of flexed feet. lol
Anyway, as for gender specific or ettiquete regarding such in pole…nah. You do what you want to get whatever results you desire. Veenas’ lessons are a great way to learn on your own and the site itself is perfect for consulting others on just about anything.
The crucial part is what do YOU want to get out of pole? Just a way to get a stronger core (you will) and bust out some cool tricks or does your fascination extend beyond that? No matter what, the possibilities are practically limitless depending on your own determination. Don’t be shy, we’re all here to support each other.

Welcome jdub,
You’ll find the lessons here are more than worthwhile. 💖 It’s so much easier than trying to find tutorials on youtube; because they are all in order, you know what tricks you should work on next. Also you can check the descriptions and related lessons to see if there are prerequisites to the move you want to learn.
This site is very supportive to polers of all genders so feel free to ask questions and post your trials, training, successes and fails! I can’t wait to see what you can do. 😀 -
Heh, hey there. My husband poles with me as well. It’s always a great time together. But yeah, as it’s been said, the standing on toes isn’t just for being pretty or looking dainty. It helps you get more height when doing holds and tricks, strengthens your legs (never skip leg day), and balance, which is of course, part of the core.
He has no issue with being up on his toes, but after taking shotokan karate and having had flexed feet beaten into him, he’s always being reminded to point in class. XD

For some reason I can’t get my wife to teach me. I will start using this site now.
