hey everyone  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif  last night i decided to start stretching at night.  i stretched right up until bedtime (stopped around 10).   usually i fall asleep before 11:00, but i was wide awake until 1 a.m, then slept until 4:45, then awake again until 6-ish, then slept until 8:30.  has this ever happened to any of you?  i think tonite i will start earlier (and stop earlier)…

Huh… I can't say that has happened to me. I love stretching at night before going to bed. It relaxes me. How are you warming up to stretch? I usually take a nice warm bath, so I'm already in a relaxed (but warm) zone, and use my foam roller if I don't feel loose enough. If you're warming up in a way that gets your heart really pumping, that might be part of the issue.

hi danielle  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif   i was in my sweats and already kind of warm, did a little movement around the pole but nothing strenuous.  maybe i just need to do more slow and gentle stretching.  even though it wasn't a workout, i was using energy.  or maybe it was just so different for my body, it didn't know how to respond, lol  🙂

I also have this problem sometimes.  Once I'm all stretched out and warm, I feel like I should start practicing pole or something and I'm more likely to stay up all night thinking about pole stuff (not that I don't already do that sometimes!).  Or, I find I don't have the energy to fully stretch everything for as long as I want to.  If I stretch at night, I really like going the gym because I can just spend most of the time stretching on the mats and I'm motivated to stretch more than I ever do at home (and also fit in some conditioning stuff I might not otherwise do).  I don't know if that's an option for you but it works for me because then when I come home I feel like I can relax since I'm changing the envirionment I'm in; it's like when I get home, I can shut off, but if I'm stretching at home I'm not always able to flip that mental switch, and I end up staying up too late.

If stretching turns into pole play or if I decide to hoop, I will not be able to sleep. Even when I do some more advanced, strenuous stretches, I need about 2 hrs to relax before I can actually go to bed and sleep. Sometimes when I really advance in a stretch that night I'll be on a bit of a high and can't sleep either. lol https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

I've found that almost any exercise gives me a buzz at night, though I usually stretch at night and have no issues. But if I'm hooping or poling, I can stay up til past midnight, easy (and usually I crash around 10).

I know exercise gets your endorphins going. It may be that stretching does that for you. I think you are on the right track by stretching a few hours earlier.

If I workout at night, I try to use a yoga cool down with a final relaxation.  Actively relax all your muscles and clear your mind.  It really helps to mentally leave the workout and the day behind so you can sleep.  Here's an explaination on how to do it:  http://www.abc-of-yoga.com/yogapractice/yogarelaxation.asp

thanks so much everyone!  all of your replies were very helpful.  last night i did a relaxing yoga dvd, but it was still hard to go to sleep.  i think that stretching is rejuvenating in alot of ways – i feel refreshed after, rather than exhausted and sleepy from being on the computer or reading.  so maybe i need to spend that last hour before bed doing something that will make me sleepy…  🙂
