so i've decided that the handspring is going to be my next goal. does anyone have any tips on how to get into it? i know there are different hand positions (twisted grip, cartwheel mount, and the backwards one with your back to the pole). which one of these is easiest for you and how long did it take you to get it? i'm not sure if i'm just not strong enough or if i just don't understand what i should be doing.

Took me two long days if breaking it down into elements then putting it back together again 🙂

I use a bracket hold, strong hand quite low to the ground for early practice (means you don’t have as far to flick up!). I stand facing the pole and swing the outside the a little to get momentum.

At first I just did the flicks into tge air. Builds strength, let’s you know where you are going and how high you get.

When I was getting pretty high I’d pull my legs into a tuck to turn upside down. I did a few just hanging upside down with my legs tucked in to get used to the weight, etc.

When you are happy getting upside down you can then straighten out the legs 🙂 ta da!

As it gets easier you’ll use the tuck less. I’ve now got the twisted grip down as well 🙂 well chuffed!

Ps. My method seems to differ from a lot of people but it works for me – everyone is a bit different

Here is the lesson if your taking them. Start with the half handspring first. These are not cartwheels where the head and body move down towards the floor but rather the head and body tip back.

Be sure that you have shoes on that cover your toes (no heels) and also you will need a ceiling that is high enough that you will not hit it with your feet.
