Oh Cream….you’re going to get so many good comments LOL. Just wait till the pros get a hold of this thread.

I’m excited to hear the good info you’re gonna get. I know a bit about weight loss and general exercise but as far as the pole is concerned I’m a noob. I do know that you shouldn’t feel like your weight hinders you. It’s your strength that hinders you and that’s improved by practice and building strength. I know women that weigh more than you that can do just as much as thin girls because they’re strong.

do the moves and you’ll get some good cardio in (burn calories) and build strength. Build the strength and you’ll grow the muscle. Grow the muscle you’ll burn the fat…..aaaaand weight loss starts in the kitchen. Diet is a big part of weight loss.

Don’t worry about big show boating moves. shimmy around the pole for 30 minutes and see if you don’t work up a sweat! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

Being heavier when you start poling will be a good thing when you start losing weight and you will be used to hoisting up all the extra weight while being thinner, you will be super woman! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumright.gif As long as you are working up a sweat its just as good (or better!) than any other exercise. But if you want to incorporate other things to help you faster, walking is always very good. Practice holding your legs up on the pole and doing pole pull ups that way you get your poling muscles stronger. I have had alot of luck with a slimfast diet along with exercise…

Ahhhh…one of my favorite topics! I will have to post the long version later as I was only checking in real quick! But….remember, the more you have to lose….the more calories you burn in a practice session! I gained 90 lbs while pregnant which put me around 240 lbs after I delivered my daughter…..I am happy to say that I am back around 150 lbs and all I do is pole (and eat healthy)!! I have many tips….but there are no tricks!! Persistance, patiencs and possitive thinking! I will continue later….Roxy

    Hi there!

I’ve been doing basic pole dance moves for about a year now and just recently really started to get serious about it. I’m a bigger girl myself. I am 5’6" and weigh about 226 now. I started a weight loss challenge last week and have been seeing a LOT of improvement. Not just from eating right but doing poling almost every day. I’ve noticed a huge change in my strength as well. I can do a couple spins that I wasn’t able to do last week!

I do Pole Parties for Brown Bag and anytime a girl about my size (or bigger) states she can’t do a move, I tell her "If "I" can do it, YOU can too!" And its true!

So try to think positively and practice a lot! You can do ANYTHING if you set your mind to it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Okay…so I said that I would post more so here goes…..losing weight is not a battle…it is a journey…sounds corny I know…but you really have to look at it as a journey with many twist, turns and curves! I don’t believe in diets…they just don’t work…you may lose a few pounds here or there, but usually it comes back as soon as you stop the diet. As the adage goes…exercise and eating right and hard work are the only real things you can do to be successful. A few rules that I live by are 1. drink lots and lots of water…you need it 2. sleep…get enough sleep…people who tend to not get enough sleep tend to gain more weight. Your body needs rest. 3. do an activity that is fun and makes you feel good…for us it’s pole. 4. be mindful about what goes in your body…usually your body is a reflection about what you eat…your skin, hair, nails etc… 5. the most important one….be possitive and believe that you are worthy of being healthy! You don’t have to be a sz 2 to be healthy and beautiful (no offense to you little girls https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif ). The one thing that I have found with pole is that since I have allowed my body to move the way it was ment to move (hippy and swagger) I have found more confidence and amazement it myself! You don’t find confidence in skinny jeans!! You find it knowing what you are capable of and what you have already accomplished. It’s kind of funny, because I have found weight loss to be more about attitude and thoughts than about food it’s self! As far as being mindful about food…it sounds cliche…but read the ingredients…if you can’t say it…don’t eat it! Fresh is always best…but if you need to get canned or processed…check the sodium content…go sodium free if you can. If you need salt, use sea salt. You can still eat the things you love…just don’t eat the whole pizza!

As far as activities to help aid in weight loss…you can do anything that gets you moving. I personally only do pole. I could go for a walk but honestly…I’d rather spend the 45 min on my pole! I get all three key elements in one super fun and sexy package( aerobic, strength and flexibility). You can do it…if and only if you truly know what you want and be willing to put forth the effort to accomplish it! Yu can do it girl! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

in 18 months of dancing, I’ve lost 22kg of fat, put on loads of muscles and gained so much toning. This wasn’t intentional but I’m enjoying the benefits.
Having to hold myself up while bigger also gave me better strength, which is paying off now.

The only advice I can give you is:

Do not expect miracles or amazing instant loss from pole. It’s not liposuction.

Eat well. Loads of unprocessed foods. Don’t do the "lite" or "diet" foods, they’re full of shite. Eat plenty of fresh veggies and fruit, whole grains, lean proteins (include legumes, grains and pulses in this category) and ensure you eat breakfast. Do not eat at fast food joints.

Keep a food diary and measure everything you eat for a month. It’ll surprise you how big our portions are. Keep to proper portions and things will drop. Protein should not be anything more than the size of your palm, vege (mainly greens etc, not too much starch) should be the size of your hand. Eat off a smaller plate to fool your brain into thinking you’ve had a big meal. (Thanks Glitz)

Drink loads of water. Do not drink "diet" soda. Full of shite. If you don’t like water, add a little squeeze of lemon to it.

Eat breakfast. Unprocessed food is better: oatmeal / porridge sweetened with dried fruit, fresh fruit, low sugar cereals. (Thanks Glitz)

Walk as much as you can. This is a great free exercise.

Only weigh yourself weekly, the body fluctuates throughout the week and you may get disheartened from a perceived weight loss. Also remember that the body retains fluid just prior to menstruation.

Allow yourself some treats or sometimes foods: if you want a chocolate biscuit, have it, just don’t eat the whole packet from denial. Ditto, if you want chocolate, eat a high cocoa solid bar, you won’t want very much before being sated. If you want a glass of wine, then have one. But that is the trick, learn moderation. I have found that by driving when we go out, I don’t drink. Easy way to not overload on empty calories.

A 30 minute freestyle session with no spins is really hard and can burn a lot of calories. Top that with a 30 minute walk to warm up and you’ll soon see differences. Just ensure your diet is healthy. Don’t go for a fad diet, many people do this with no idea of what they’re really doing. By this I don’t mean deciding to eat vegan, do weightwatchers etc, I mean doing Atkins, skinny bitch etc without good dietary knowledge or the advice of a nutritionist. I’m vegan, but I trained as a chef, have my own garden and am very aware of what goes in my mouth therefore I know how to balance what I’m eating and how good really fresh broccoli tastes.

Remember that muscle weighs far more than fat, so don’t rely on the scales for a true indication of your body; clothes getting loose are a far better sign of progress, as well as being able to work out for longer or harder. set up a measurement chart, watch your progress that way, measure bust, waist, hips, upper arms, thighs etc.

Most of all, set realistic goals and expect it will take a while. Aim for 1kg per month, and see what you get. Anything on top of that then becomes a bonus. Also ensure you see your Dr too, to ensure you’re going about it in a healthy, sensible manner. A total screen also will give you a starting point by which you can measure the non-visible improvements to your health from your efforts.

Gah, I wrote a novel!! But after too many years of diet addiciton and body dimorphism, I feel I’m pretty aware of the traps. I do eat crap, but far less than I used to. But all the above works better than any fad diet.
