Well, depending on the grip tape, you'll probably find that the tape edges roll when you put that much pressure on it- it'd get gross and sticky pretty fast. You might also find it fairly uncomfortable after a while. Obviously there wouldn't be any spins possible with something like that, or really a lot of sliding in any way…
Not to mention the horrible mess if/when you take it off the pole. That glue won't come off easy!
But if you make it work, it'd be neat to hear about how!

I tried silicone boat tape one time…it didnt really work.. It tore and the edges rolled up

It can work in a pinch. Layer the tape from bottom to the top so the top edges of the tape area always overlapping. Makes for less 'rolling' of the tape. Then powder the tape with talc or something similar so the adhesive is not so sticky. If your pole is stainless steel, after you remove the tape you can clean the residue off with with some pretty hardcore cleaning products with no problem. I would not do this with an xpole because the finish is a coating and not the whole depth of the pole. Therefore, removal of the tape could possibly pull off some of the coating, especially if there is already a defect in it. Also, I wouldn't trust more extreme cleaning products with the coating. I know stainless would be fine, but not sure about the chrome. Hope that helps.

And my experience is with athletic tape specifically. Not sure about other tapes. I was told bike tape works well.

Well….I DID wrap a pole in grip tape, the kind you would use for a hoop!! I did it for a green screen video I was doing so I could "remove" the pole in the video! I can tell you it was soooooooo painful to use! It was like rope burn all over, not recommended!! But the video turned out pretty cool!! lol

I used blue painters tape, sticky side out. It help me for good grip while I tried to figure out my SG Aysha. I have a video with it…..I just taped the two area where I put my hands.
