Yeah, you do build up a tolerance to it.  I do moves on it and then come down and do floor work, go up again, come down.  I also migrate from static to spinny to give myself a break during a song.  I try to find a nice even speed and definitely look at something that is moving with you.  Like anything else, with practice and time you get better.

I took a doubles workshop with her after EMW.  She's a great instructor.  I'm a huge fan.  Love her to bits and I think you will too!

Ok, so I did one of Shiva Rea's DVD's this morning.  It kicked my ass,but it felt SOO good!!  I have to say that what she teaches is so applicable to pole!  The continuous slow flow of the moves in the 'water' section reminds me of the way Alethia dances, so fluid, controlled and sensual.  The fire section had a TON of push-ups which is great for all that upper body strength we need.  There was also a lot of hip opening (perfect for splits), back bends (I love me some bendy backs) and spinal undulations (very sexy).  The music is world music and has a hypotic quality to it.  She's not a 'typical' yoga teacher.  There is a lyrical, rhythmic quality to her movement.  I used to teach yoga and have studied it for years, so I've been exposed to a lot of yoga.  She's different.   I am really enjoying her fresh, creative, and hip style.  Now that I'm thinking about it, she is my new fav.

I got it from the library and I'll definitely be getting her other dvds.  Most people on Amazon rave about her Yoga Shakti DVD.  218 people gave it 5 stars!

Hey Vamp,  Go to your local library.  Mine has a TON of yoga DVD's.  I happened to check out Shiva Rea and did it yesterday and WOW.  She is awesome.  She's very much on our level I think – I could definitely see her poling!  One of her DVD's, Vinyasa Flow, supposedly infuses dance with yoga so I just purchased it from Amazon.

Jess, I have the Valentino Bros 2 stretching DVDs.  I have only done one of them so far.  The production value is very poor, but hey, it is only 15 bucks!  One of the stretches though worried me because it is contraindicated by ACE and the Navy training centers.  It hyperflexes both knees and is pretty dangerous.  It's on page for of this document: http://www.usuhs.mil/bde/physicalfitness/navydocuments/physicalfitnessseriescontraindicated.pdf

The valentino bros lay all the way down with their backs fully on the ground, stressing the knee even more than in the picture in the pdf.  I have to say I prefer my yoga dvd's better than the Valentino's dvd.

I love Rodney Yee.  His videos are very relaxing yet challenging.  The camera angles are great for following along.

Thanks PowerTwirl (Kristin) and Terp (Bex) for the shout out!!  You guys are so sweet!  Samantha, I'd love to have you at either the Jan or Feb training.  The Feb training is in Wilmington, Deleware which shouldn't be too far for you!  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.  You can email me directly at mailto:abaranyi@yahoo.com.

Everyone here; Empy, Charley, Amy, Yoga, Free, and Horsecrazy have given such great advice.  The only way pole can continue to thrive and be accepted as a respected form of fitness is if all of us instructors strive to be the best we can be and bring professionalism to the sport.  All it takes is one poorly taught class or an injury to turn a client off of pole.  Great teaching is an art and it takes a lot of time and hard work to develop those skills.  I strongly believe in co-teaching and mentorships for those who want to teach.  A certification will give you the background knowledge on safety, cueing, spotting, anatomy, etc, but LIVE teaching and practice is the best way to learn.  I love how NY Pole Dance has apprentice teachers that teach at reduced costs.  I think that is a win-win for both the teacher and the students. Teaching parties is a great start too!  Watching good teaching really helps too!  CrazySam, have you signed up for Veena's lessons?  She's a wonderful instructor and her safety and conditioning information is vitally important.  Have you been to Awakenings Pole Dance in King of Prussia?  All the instructors there are either ACE/AFAA certified plus they have taken my course.  I'd highly recommend taking one of their series so you can see some great live teaching in action.  All the classes are co-taught so you get a lot of one-on-one time.

    Hi,

I did the Pole Position Fitness Certification a few years ago up in Long Island, but I really don’t want to comment about my experience with that training….

I developed my own teacher program this year. My program is designed for people who already know moves. I don’t teach any moves in my course, I teach you HOW to teach them. I have a huge section of my training devoted to safety and injury prevention. I cover shoulder, forearm, and knee anatomy in addition to lengthy demonstrations on how to keep them safe! I cover spotting, proper body alignment and form, teaching inverts, testing readiness to invert, stretching techniques, movement deconstruction, classroom management, class design, learning styles, cueing techniques, progressions, and so much more.

My manual comes with a conditioning pictorial, proper alignment pictorial, lesson plan example, and lesson plan templates for you to use to design your class. I have a template for breaking down movement that is really easy to use. My course is 10 hours long and I am approved to give 9 AFAA CEUs and 1 ACE CEUs. I am up for renewal for both ACE and AFAA and I will probably be lengthening my course because I have so much to cover. In addition, my program was sanctioned by the PFA! I don’t have a business element like Mary Ellen does, so if you are looking for that piece you’ll need to do her training.

I brought a lot of my classroom experience into this manual. I have taught pole, chair and yoga for 3 years and I have a Master’s in Education. I’m also an ACE certified Group Fitness Instructor and like Mary Ellen I think GFI is extremely important as is first aid and CPR training. I’ve worked in both public and private schools as a science teacher and school counselor for almost 14 years now. I do require that you know the muscles used in pole and that you pass a written 4 page exam. I also require that you submit a lesson plan and video of your teaching skills before I issue my certification.

I’m located in the mid-atlantic region and most of my trainings are on the East Coast. I will be certifying my friend on the West Coast who has her own certification program called Pole Moves and she will be a Master Trainer for me as I am already a Master Trainer for her!

Hanna, any interest in selling the pic? I’d like to use it on my website. It matches the style I’ve got going. I’d rather have pics of someone else on there than bother with another photoshoot. http://www.discoveriesdance.com

Oh yeah!! The cards are on the iphone app, I just checked. They are under the "PFA Experts" thumbnail. So if you get that for 10 bucks, you’ve got the cards!! I don’t know if it’s all of them though.

Thanks for the pep talk mancandy! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_sunny.gif You are so right!

PS, saw your impromptu performance in the lower level of the club at the afterparty for uspdf in March. The girls back my way were going nuts and wanted to know who you were. One girl turned around and with big eyes whispered "that’s mancandy". Everyone was like "yeah, he is!" lol.
