Hi Amelia, welcome to the neighbourhood! I used to commute to Birmingham, but now work from home. I live in the East Midlands near Burton and Tamworth. It’s probably a bit further than ideal for me, but if no one closer replies, give me a shout and I’m sure we can sort something out 🙂

I had almost exactly the same thing last year. I did a Hello Boys to Venus Sit, both of which were easy moves for me. I’d had a virus and had felt tired all evening in class. I went into the Venus Sit, had a split second of surprise when both my hands lost energy to hold the pole, and next thing I landed on my head on the floor. I had concussion for 4 days after, and went back into the beginner group for ages and had to be spotted for every move because I was so shocked and my confidence was knocked. A year later and I’m still not where I was. I’m still working one level lower in class, and I use grip aid more and ask for a spotter more. My confidence is coming back slowly but still nowhere near where it was. I suspect that like me, you may be quite a safety-minded person? Like, you’ll be aware of risks and generally behave safely in everyday life? I ask because I think these things affect us more. It brings our value of safety/security into conflict with our desire to do poling – a slightly more risky activity – and being injured really brings that conflict into focus, causing extra anxiety. What helped me was giving myself permission to only do what I was comfortable with for as long as I needed that (quite a long time as it happens!) until gradually my safety boundaries started to push outwards again and I found myself gradually trying more stuff again. It’s been very frustrating though, and I still don’t pole at home any more because I live by myself and I’m frightened of injury with no one to find me or help me.

Definitely normal, though different moves are better/worse for different people. Pole sit and gemini were never bad for me. Scorpio was quite ouch-y. Martini sit was so bad that I honestly thought I’d vomit. I had to force myself to do it once per lesson until suddenly it stopped hurting. Teddy was not do-able at all… I remember asking my instructor if anyone had ever torn their skin doing Teddy that she knew of, because I really thought mine was going to. I had to build up from a little ‘hop’ to a micro-second hold, to a longer hold, to full Teddy, all with cries of pain throughout :p And when they stop hurting, never take more than 1-2 weeks off poling or they start hurting and you bruise all over again!

Hi skyember, great decision, congratulations! I’m coming up to 7.5 years vegan and my only regret is not having done it sooner 🙂 It’s easier than you think and there are huge quantities of mainstream foods, toiletries, cosmetics, household cleaners, clothes, perfumes etc that are suitable for vegans (SFV) so you often don’t even need to seek out specialist options to be cruelty free.

There are loads of vegan groups on Facebook who share food, recipes and product finds – just search ‘vegan’ and see what comes up. It’s nice to feel part of a community.

If you like baking, I can highly recommend two books: Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World, and Vegan Cookies Take Over Your Cookie Jar. Deliciousness beyond words 🙂 Also Veganomicon has hundreds of mains, starters, sides, desserts etc. It’s a chunky book and could serve dual purpose in beating off home intruders. There are also lots of recipes available free on blogs. Try searching ‘vegan’ on Pinterest for recipes in one place.

I use normal flours, oils, veg, grains, pulses, fruits etc when cooking from scratch. I do however keep in a supply of Linda McCartney vegan sausages and sausage rolls, Frys sausages and burgers, and supermarket chips (fries), onion rings, potato wedges and sauces for when I feel lazy and unhealthy 😀 You can use mock mince (soya based) for shepherds pie, casseroles etc, but you can also use red or green lentils as a super healthy and filling substitute, and these can also be used as the basis for homemade burgers.

In fact there are so many options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Keep calm and take it one day at a time. Don’t beat yourself up if you get something wrong or make a mistake. No one’s perfect and you’ve got years to explore, learn and have fun with this 🙂

if you have any questions or want any support, feel free to message me. Good luck!

SAD seems to be over now and I’m back on the splits challenge. I’m following a version of the Splits in 6 Weeks programme but between now and the end of September rather than 6 weeks! Front splits starting point is 30 cm (12 inches) off the floor. Side splits is worse! Oh well, the only way is down…

Just to add, the only time I don’t do everything both sides is if we do a freestyle in class – but I still try to use both sides even if the moves are different 🙂

Hello! Good decision 🙂 I train everything both sides. I get easily confused when people talk about left handed and right handed moves as some people seem to mean “moving clockwise” (i.e. starting on the left) for left handed and others mean “left hand on top” which would be anti-clockwise for some moves. I just do both sides and don’t worry what “handedness” it is! Yes, everything reverses. So if I climb with my right hand high and right leg at the back of the pole, I then switch to left hand high and left leg at the back of the pole.
If I’m learning a new move I feel cautious about, I try it first on my good side. Then the bad side next, when I’ve understood the points of contact, push-pull mechanism etc. (Literally once on the good side, then once on the bad side, and then keep alternating.) But when I know a move and I’m just practising, I try to start on my bad side 50% of the time so I don’t get into a habit of always doing things first on my good side. I figure if I ever get into difficulties in a routine I need to be able to instinctively ‘save myself’ on my bad side without stopping to think and reverse the actions in my head!

Duh! I commented on your (beautiful, awesome) video but not here. Well, you know I think it was great 😀 Super job!

In other news, tonight I got a superman for the first time on my good side. Bad side I still get stuck halfway over lol but I know now I’ve got it once I can get it both sides in future. Woohoo!

Well done Neesy! I did take Wed eve off but had a fab class last night and worked hard. I managed a seat climb in which I actually climbed (rather than staying in the same place while making climbing motions, ha ha) and several new moves. Happy days! Have a good evening yourself 🙂

Meggie! Stop feeling guilty and focus on getting better! I wouldn’t be poling with all that going on. I hope the sinus infection goes really quickly and that the new job’s going well. Hugs.

Fab class tonight! I did a chopper into every invert (yay for stronger arms despite the Christmas break!), managed an aerial invert on my bad side (not pretty but hey) and started trying for superman. Eeeeek! The studio has rubber mats so I still haven’t done the SV challenge pirouettes and I’m knackered now so no shoulder slides. Catching up today on tomorrow eve, and will do the pirouettes on Thurs at class on their wooden floor.
