I’m going to have to check some of these out too!
I usually go for Mika, Aqua, or Florence + The Machine.

M Darling – I TOTALLY understand! I live in NYC, and they put up all this scaffolding to do repairs and construction. It’s sad how often I walk by and think, “If that building was on fire, I could rescue a small child,” or something equally ridiculous.
Plus, what’s the value of being able to shoot a free throw, or kick a field goal? Some things don’t have to be practical, they can just be cool.

I want to know who these detractors are. Who, when they see this move, says, “Yeah, but when will you ever USE that?”

I agree that mixed level classes can work really well, especially if everyone is learning different variations on a move. I just had one class recently where the instructor taught us handsprings. Of course, not everyone there was ready just yet, so we also learned different levels of spins to build up to it. I was at the lower end of the pack, but I thought it was very helpful to see what I was preparing for.
I also think the students in the group matter a lot. I’ve learned so much by going up to more advanced students and saying, “How did you do that? How are you balancing? What grip are you using?” And I also try to help lower level students when they’re trying to learn moves I already know. When everyone’s a teacher AND a student, everyone gets more out of it, I find.

Do you have a schedule posted anywhere? I’d love to take a workshop if I could! I second ofezo; flexibility would be fun. But really, I’d take anything that was offered. 🙂

@GataAgressiva – I love that you have defined pole personalities! Like a lot of people, I think my style is a little different every day. That’s an interesting idea, though. I might have to try developing a few of my own characters.

I took a flexibility test once, and didn’t even make it on the scale. Before I started pole, I’d be lucky if I could reach a full hand length past my knees in a pike stretch.
I’ve been doing Veena’s stretches for the past couple of month, and I’ve already seen a HUGE improvement. I’m a long way from my splits, but I can at least touch my toes. I try to do it every 3 days. I try to do it after I pole. I crank up the heat and put on lots of layers.

Haha! I love this thread!
My pole’s name is Gal-Up Pole. It was such a lame pun I had to do it! I’ve already got a name picked out for the spin pole I’ll get some day in the future – it’ll be True North.

I agree with Luvlee, especially if you don’t always get enough protein. I’m a vegetarian, so I tend to be lazy about that (especially on days when I don’t work out). I noticed that when I made an effort to get more protein in my diet, it was easier to gain strength and maintain it.

I know what you mean! I’m one of those nerdy people where, if I’m interested in something, I have to go out and read all the top books about it. But I haven’t really found any good resources for pole dancing. I hope someone has some good suggestions, because I’d also love to know more about the mechanics of it.
I will say that Veena’s lessons have been super helpful for the flexibility part. I still had to do some Googling to figure out what was actually happening biology-wise, but they’re the best resource I’ve found in terms of actually making me more flexible.

I had a similar experience when I moved this summer, and had to take about 3 months off pole. I had a gym membership, and doing weight training definitely helped. It still took a few pole sessions to get back up to speed, but I didn’t lose nearly as much as I would have otherwise. Plus, in some ways, I was stronger than when I stopped poling.
Verticali – Great suggestion about the floorwork. That’s something I really wished I would have worked on over the summer.
Just hang in there! Taking a forced pole vacation SUCKS, but it’s not the end of the world. At least you don’t have any injuries that prevent you from exercising altogether, so you should be able to get back in the swing of things fairly quickly.

You definitely want to make sure your CKR is solid before you try that (or stay really close to the ground), but it’s the most effective ab exercise I’ve found.

Are you just coming as a tourist? If so, then you probably have more flexibility. I haven't done a lot of looking into hotel/hostels (y'know, since I live here and all), but I just booked a room for someone at work, and I can tell you the rates are a good 2-3 times more than any other part of the country. Look out for the hospitality tax, too, since that's pretty steep. (I don't know the exact number, but it's in the 10-15% range.)
If you're on a budget, you might want to look into the other boroughs. It's pretty easy to get from Queens or Brooklyn to Manhattan, as long as your hotel/hostel is near a subway stop. (Parts of Brooklyn are pretty up-and-coming, so you can definitely spend a day or two playing tourist there.) Places on the New Jersey are more affordable, and the taxes are lower, but transportation is harder since they're not on the same MTA transit system. (There are trains, but then you'll have to buy your train tickets as well as your subway tickets.)
If you're really in a pinch, you could try airbnb, where you can rent out people's spare rooms. I haven't tried it, so I won't vouch for it, but it's an option.

New York's a big place! Do you know what part of town you're mainly going to be in?
As far as pole dance studios go, yeah, there's lots of good choices. I go to Foxy Fitness, but I've heard good things about Body and Pole, and NY Pole as well.
