I would not recommend Studio Botan to my worst enemy. They consider butterfly a beginner move, and insult people if they are having a sweaty day. I went to their studio for open pole and an intermediate class. I did an hour of free styling and conditioning before I went to the int. class, and thought I brought my itac with me but apparently I left it at home. I was told I needed to go back to “beginner classes” because I couldn’t hold a sit due to sweat grip issues. Nevermind the fact that I just did janeiro to marchenko–I apparently needed to go back to “beginner classes”. OK. She also felt the need to loudly announce this infront of the entire class, and also she did not spot my friend who had never done a shoulder mount invert. Said friend fell and while she didn’t hurt herself badly, she had a bruise from falling and was not offered a spot, nor was a spoke given when asked. Highly unprofessional, unsafe, and incredibly rude.

Poltential is the exact opposite. You can take the Cal Train and BART to the studio for maybe $7? Christina is an angel and courteous to EVERYONE who comes. She always remembers me even though I only come into the studio maybe once or twice a year and I’ve never heard her speak ill of another studio. The trainers at Botan, however, told me not to go to Poletential. Glad I didn’t listen. Also, Poltential has a couple of different pole sizes, 38, 40, and 45. Their poles are also taller.

I’m in this boat right now. I can get my hands together, but not the elbow into the pole. I also turn a bit (it helps to keep your back to the pole if when you invert, you keep your inside hand on the pole and your outside hand to guide the leg). I also think it’s worth mentioning that upsidedown is a lot easier than right side up, and I’m referring to the movements from an outside leg hand/inverted position.

The first pair of socks I got from Might Grip ripped after first use. Joel sent me a new pair free of charge. 🙂 Sounds like he’s still up to doing good customer service.

I’m 5’10” and used to dance in tens. I think they look stupid now. On me, I mean. Shoes with more of an arch seem to compliment my leg shape now. I’m a size 9 in shoes for reference

I have been poling on and off for about 4 years. Ayesha is my nemesis move :/ I could do fonjis before I could do Ayesha.

I was able to do the eagle about a year ago. I watched a lot of videos by one of the contortionists here, Lina Spiralyne (I think was her name at the time?) I watched all of her stretching videos and after practicing stretching for about 2 months I could do the Eagle and Music Box. Music box is a lot harder to get into than Eagle for me. I find if you start in a crucifix, lean down, and then grab the foot while you stand up straight it is easier to get the Eagle.

There’s one other one that I watched, but I basically just did this and whatever was available for flexibility at my studio. My main issue was shoulder flexibility, but I know everyone is different.

I have heard of people having issues removing their pole sleeves and having to cut their’s off. At a pole convention in Las Vegas last year, they were selling them for base $250. I would instead recommend trying to get your hands on these, and just wrapping a few of them around your pole. They’re thinner and provide the same level of grip, imo.

My issue with the instructor is that she didn’t pull you aside to tell you these things out of reach of another student’s ears. Just because you can’t do handstands due to an aspect of fear of mental block does not mean you are not strong. I was doing dead lift shoulder mounts before I could do a simple handstand. If her issue was really your safety, I would question why she felt the need to say it right then and there. If I were someone whose income depended on people LIKING the way I teach, and not going to another studio, I would be courteous and cautious as to how I approached girls when it comes to telling them to work on conditioning. Comparing you to another student in a negative manner is never okay, and I would inform the studio owner that she risks losing money by having her instructor say such insensitive, personal things, publicly.

I’ve always wondered how you got so flexy, Lina! Thank you so much for sharing, I’m going to sub and really work on my back flexibility the rest of the year.

Buying a bigger size might make them fall off. As was the issue with me when I sized up my BK shorts.

I had the regular bad kitty shorts and I’m 5’10. They rode up a lot. The Felix Cane shorts and really nice. They still ride up my butt a little, but in a cute cheeky way. Not in a “I think my lady parts are about to fall out” way. I’m wearing them in this video if you want to see how they look: https://www.studioveena.com/videos/view/524be232-5fe0-49dc-afa3-36f60ac37250
