What helped me was getting the correct points of contact. This is very important because they create the push/pull that locks the body onto the pole. Once I got those right I felt very secure. Also using grip on the contact points on the legs-behind the knees-helped me. The grip helped when I transition from Gemini to Scorpio with no hands. Good luck!

Ruth, so sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you are well soon. There are videos on the site that are complete workouts so you don’t have to figure them out for yourself. That alone is worth it. I tried Nia and loved it too. Found it to be very feminine and spiritual. Be well.

  • 49 here and been back poling since April. Joined a studio about a month ago and was so thrilled to have the same experience! The instructor keeps saying “and you, you are strong so I want you to do it this hard way”. I did competitive figure skating and the other girls would just as soon put razor blades in your skates, never mind clap and be supportive and offer to take a video. Not sure if the forum here and the studio are representative of the pole community but I hope so. I just love seeing women of all shapes, sizes and ages kicking ass with no apologies.

One final thought. Doing it for a living takes much more physical and mental strength. To me to say #notastripper means someone is actually LESS of an athlete. Didn’t get to take days off to nurse sore muscles or injuries. Had to perform or be homeless. Competed every day because the one with the better skills got to pay her rent that month. Many of the girls did serious gymnastics too. And there were no lessons then. No poles to learn on at home. Damn hard physically and required street smarts. And poling was only a small part of the job. Not like now when I can slip into the other room for a little herbal tea and a nap if I get tired poling. But it was a tiny piece of my journey that helped make me the strong, confident woman I am today. And you know what? I have seen more shameful behavior in the boardroom than I’ve seen in the clubs. I’ve left “normal” jobs because the ethics made me sick. At the end of the day it’s about respecting and honoring each other’s journey.

Veeennnaa!! Thank yooouuu!! The video is spectacular! All those criteria apply to me. I have been using iTac. Where does one purchase DewPoint and Mighty Grip? I have a powder coated lil mynx and even have trouble sticking to that. Cold hands, cold climate, don’t sweat. Even in the summer I only sweat a little.

Been doing them for 6 mos but possibly it’s because my food intake is not matching my output and I need to eat more. Maybe my muscles aren’t regenerating properly. My bmi is down to 18.

I feel like I am losing back flexibility. I can’t do a layback any more and grab the pole. I am consistently poling, working on flexibility, strength, but I seem to be regressing in flex. Not sure if it’s stress from work and needing to increase my food intake. My bmi is down to 18.

My story is the same as viscious’s. i’m just glad I found poling again and now it’s a sport too. I feel good about being at the studio with women 20 years younger and keeping up, love my body, my strength and don’t give a flying #*^} what anyone thinks. The haters are just cowards and secretly jealous imho. #peopleneedtogetoverthemselves.

It’s not that I don’t expect to feel the muscles but there’s a difference between feeling them and knowing when something is wrong. I have a burning sensation between my scapula sometimes, which to me indicates I need to strengthen them. Also I might have the name of the grip wrong. I’m trying to do this. Is there a dictionary of grips btw? I am using the wrong terminology I think. Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated!

Also I found if I use grip aid on my thighs it makes it worse. I am skinny and have space between my thighs so I have to grip hard. I thought I would die learning superman. Also don’t let the pain keep you from learning how to come out of a move safely. When first learning superman I would do the move, be all happy I did it, then let go and go crashing on the mat to end the pain. Good luck!!

When I invert I still feel it in my back muscles- the ones between the scapula. I do the scapula exercises you teach-front, back, up, down scapula but I don’t seem to feel like it’s targeting those muscles. Other general exercises I do are push ups, jumping jacks, sit ups, crunches, lunges, the flex band exercises to strengthen the shoulders, pole push-ups, the one where you stand with your feet at the pole base and pull yourself to the pole then lean back (forgot what it’s called), leg lifts, yoga, pull ups, stretching, etc etc. I don’t want my back to give out because my arms and abs feel like they are stronger than my back.

I would like to strengthen my wrists too. I type all day and sometimes my wrists feel weak, esp when doing the twisted grip. Sometimes I feel it in my wrists when doing superman as well. Never pain, just a feeling like those muscles haven’t caught up with the other arm muscles.

Last thing is I’m doing the leg raises for my hip flexors. My goal is to invert with straight legs and other things that require strong hip flexors. Not sure the exercises I’m doing are the right ones. Ive booked some private lessons and take classes at a local studio but honestly I feel like i get more out of studio Veena because I can tailor it to my level and repeat things if I need to. I am more concerned about doing the right strengthening than progressing quickly. Safety first! Thanks!!

I was helping a friend put up an xpole over the weekend and there was no way to make it static. There are supposed to be holes to put the allen wrench in to tighten it but there’s nothing inside. After helping her put up her xpole I am glad to have my lilmynx that is all one piece and has a simple locking mechanism.

Thanks for the advice. Veena, it’s actually deep inside in the area right above my pubic bone and I he inside of my left hip. Thankfully it seems to be improving. It now hurts mostly on climbing. Taking this time to work on flexibility.

Hi, yes, will rest, as excruciating as that is. I am so afraid I’m going to lose the moves I worked so hard on. To answer the above question, I pole in some form about 5 days a week, sometimes just warm up and pole for a short time. It is only excruciating when I climb. We were doing a lot of climbing in class and I think that’s what few it over the edge. I am of course thinking the worst, like I’ve got a hernia or something, so will be on the phone with the dr post haste in the am. When I get back at it I want to make sure I warm up those muscles thoroughly. Can anyone suggest specific exercises to warm up the abs in a gentle way?
