I was exactly like you in the beginning – I thought I was awesome because I could get into an invert easily (stupid beginners pride!) until my instructor pointed out I was just kicking like crazy and not actually using any strength. To force myself to use my muscles and develop some decent core strength, she made me stand on my tiptoes… so put your butt a bit more in front of the pole, and it'll be nicely tucked into your forearm, stand right up on your toes, and then you can't kick. You'll find it really hard at first but it's a great way to slowly develop your invert and learn how to control it all and then when you get to do deadlift/air inverts they're much easier too. Good luck, hope that helps!

you can totally do it! also remember – the people who put videos on youtube, etc, are usually the fairly skinny body confident girls! Don't get me wrong, they're amazingly brave and I admire them (i am too scared to put stuff on YT!) but if you're not going to classes or meeting other polers in person you can get this idea that only skinny girls are good at it. I have been to lots of different studios and trust me – I have seen a LOT of plus size, gorgeously chunky and curvy girls do amazing things on the pole! Stuff that I can only hope to do in a million years. So don't get into the mindset of "I will only be able to do stuff once I've lost weight", it's all about strength and not your size or shape at all! Keep practicing and it'll come!

this looks brilliant! I am so glad I found this thread, I have just moved cities and so don't have any pole friends here yet and have been poling solo in my living room. I really want to go if I can afford it though, you're right, the prices are a bit ouch! If anyone else is going from North England (I'm in Leeds) I'd be keen to travel down together if they are!
