Congrats Nich!!!!! And the Falklands… wow that is super cool. I am sooooo jealous.

I'm away the first half of april, but that's ok – just have it whenever suits the most people. If it's the second half I'll be sure to come along 🙂 regardless I will hopefully see many of you at Becky's Dan Rosen workshop!

Sorry about the delay in replying I've been away! I am TOTALLY up for this! last time was epic. The following weekends work for me:

    26/27 January

    9/10th February

    16/17th February

I'm working or away every other weekend, assuming we want it before March, that is. Really hope that works with your studio Shona! I still don't have shoes though 🙁

I went to one in Buenos Aires a few times, it was called Art Dance Studio. Really good! I had private lessons with a girl called Florencia, and she was great and her English was brilliant too (I spoke awful Spanish so that was good for me!)

They ran classes which looked really good too but as I was only there a few days I wanted a private class. I also hired a room with two poles for myself for a few hours and it was pretty cheap (at least compared to UK prices). I would definitely recommend them.

I used to only be able to stick when the pole was seriously warm, but my brass is best when it's cold! As long as I am fairly dry too – I find that's the best combination for me. So I'm with you, CapFeb (at least as far as brass is concerned!)

this is the best video i have seen in AGES!

If I could have this playing at home, on repeat, for hours on end, so I could try to learn all your moves, I totally would.

Welcome to pole and to SV! This group of polers is the most supportive community I've ever found so you'll get help with anything you need. I totally understand about the overwhelming feeling… when I first started I had no idea how big a world this was and it was terrifying. Just take it in little pieces and don't expect too much from yourself, it takes a good few months to teach your body this weird way of moving – no matter how fit, strong, or flexible you are, it's unlikely you've ever done this sort of combination-style exercise so it takes awhile to get used to it! I know it sounds like we're all repeating each other but really, DON'T compare yourself to others on here – the more people you chat to the more you realise how different we all are, there really is no defined time to nail down a particular move. The best way to track your progress is video it as much as you can and watch it back every now and again and you'll soon realise how much you've improved!

Have fun too – it's the most important thing!

By all means be as healthy and athletic as you can, of course that's always a good thing. But I gotta agree with ShonaLancs here – if you're generally slim, and fit, and you have a tiny belly in that area, then it's what your body is meant to look like! to get rid of it you'd have to drop some serious body fat percentage, which would also mean your boobs would get smaller and you'd be less healthy overall. Women are meant to store fat mostly around their hips/lower tummy so that tiny bit extra you have is naturally going to go here. I really wouldn't worry about it if generally you're in good shape – just focus on the good!

I think pole doesn't burn that much fat in the same way a purely cardio workout does. But it's way more fun 😉 I think eating well is most important, personally.

I try to think of it like I need to eat well to fuel my body so I can achieve my best in pole, and to avoid long term health issues (diabetes, heart disease and cancer all run in my family). So when I need to motivate myself I try not to think about the "skinny" factor or losing weight or how I look, because they're all things that you don't see changes in quickly, and can depend so much on so many things. I tell myself I'm doing this for all the other benefits that you can't see, and that helps me stick to a healthy eating plan when I'd rather just reach for the KFC!!

November 24, 2012 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Constipation

lol you're going to be so inundated with replies you won't know which advice to take! Constipation is SO common, don't be embarrassed! The basic rules are lots of fibre (to bulk it out), water (keep it bulked out during the transition in your gut) and exercise (helps the natural peristaltic/squeezing movements of your bowel). And a medium amount of sugar… I'm not sure what it does, but that's why a big night of boozing tends to lead to a loose tummy the next morning, the sugar in the alcohol stimulates it. So any of these, without the others, may screw it up. If you're onthe paleo diet you may be eating too much fibre, without keeping up your water levels. So I'd definitely increase that first before trying any laxatives. For a super easy trick, a nutritionist friend told me to have a large glass of orange juice just before bed… the sugars in that are apparently enough to fix a generic single episode of constipation.

Oh God this is hard. You have to make your own choice and remember that whatever it is, people here will support you and respect that it was yours to make. So I don't really want to tell you what to do. BUT, I will say this: People, men and women, DO NOT CHANGE unless they want to. You can't change him, and to be honest, even if he wants to change it is a hard thing to do. So he has to really want to. Not "oh baby I love you of course I don't want to hurt you, I just get so angry blah blah blah." That's not enough. So keep that in mind when making your decision. Marry someone with your eyes wide open.

I would suggest postponing the wedding (is that do-able?) and living on your own for awhile. Then you may get a better idea of what real life would be like with him and whether he's willing to pull his own weight and respects you in a "normal" lifestyle. I realise that's easier said than done but it's very hard to judge things when you're living in that situation (which sounds stressful for you both), and this isn't a decision to take lightly.

I have similar conversations at work alot, when I'm talking about pole (usually to girlfriends) and realise a male co-worker has been eavesdropping, although they all know I pole anyway. They always ask if they can come along or watch sometime, or make the usual crack about a work night out to a strip club and watching me… And a few times I've just said "well I can't do anything here, but you couldn't do it anyway, you've got to be really flexible" and then i casually lean back against a convenient wall and do a handwalk down, finishing in the crab position! They are always gobsmacked!

It helps that I work with unfit guys (anyone athletic would realise it's not a very hard move, it just looks cool), I work in a science lab not an office, and we have to wear long pants or jeans so I can't flash anyone!
