I just had a pole powder coated, going to pick it up in a few days. I’ll let you know what the grip is like in my opinion. 🙂

So I gave this trick a little tumble.. ha ha. I will need to try this again while filming, not sure if  I had bad arm positioning – I kept getting pole burn on the outside of my hooking arm? I also think I wasn't extending enough to make room for the transition. I did however hit my cheba split without feeling as nervous. =)

I also remembered seeing this trick float around a while back, but I've never attempted this variation either.

Aha! You ladies kick ass! I can't wait to try this tonight. That was a great tutorial too, I was getting flustered trying to do this, and I realize my hips weren't off the pole far enough. Thanks for the help! I'll post some progress pics once I nail it!

I am so ready for this challenge! It's also the first day of the 2 week celebration of "Bringing Sexy Back 2013" hosted by United Pole Artists.

I took a cute picture for my pole blog, as well a little article about celebrating the sexier side of pole class.

  • It's really happening now! Tomorrow is my grand opening, and I just got home from a day of cleaning and final touches on the studio. It's so surreal to finally be at this moment, and I can't wait to see the place full of happy pole dancers. Pole has truly given me a way to express myself, and I've become the strong, confident women I never knew I could be. I'm ready to be a business owner and be successful. Wish me luck ladies!

Update from 2011 – I made it to the 2 year mark of being a non smoker! 🙂

This thread just reminds me how many things have changed for the better since I started pole.

Sweet! Was just talking about her today and how she was one of my first pole inspirations! Gotta go check out her new videos. 🙂 so awesome to know that she is back to poling. Does anyone know if she stopped pole for a while, or just stopped getting online?

I teach by counts, and I also teach by movement. Some students catch on faster when I put each step to a count, others learn better when I show and then they just repeat. I typically use counts for choreographed class routines, simply because it is easy to teach a group. I do encourage my students to learn freestyle as well, we also learn a few moves and then dance to different songs as well. I also give them freestyle time at the end of class to explore their own movement.

Remember this though, it's YOUR class. You can teach any way you want. Not everyone will like it, or pick it up, but it's your choice.

Your student may have been frustrated, or unable to pick up the moves, lots of people struggle with free movement. I also agree that former dancers, cheerleaders, etc seem to focus on breaking things down into counts.

I've been poling for 3 years, started off self taught. I've taken a variety of classes and workshops over the years though. The hardest thing about being self taught is that my progress seemed a bit slower, simply because I had to spend the time to figure out the trick. It's much easier to learn with a pair of experienced eyes helping you out, an instructor can spot problems, make adjustments and guide you more quickly. I also agree that filming and watching your practices is very helpful, make notes as you watch too, like "point left toe during hook spin", or "straighten core, exhale on invert lift", etc..

Coolest things I have learned so far? Genie into shoulder mount leg lock, V split on the pole,  allegra, twisted grip handspring, no hands cupid. And so many more! I love pole. So much to learn, and so many variations to try!

*Update from 2010 – fast forward to 2013:

My boyfriend is now my hubby. =) I finally got good enough to become a competition finalist, and he not only came to support me, but drove me to practice the night before, gave me great pep talks, and even brought a guy friend to cheer me on too. After all the hours and dedication and love I poured into, he learned to love it for me. And he is the most incredible partner, encouraging and supportive, he is my partner in our new pole studio. Maybe now I can get him to do some private classes with me!

Lesson learned, what you love becomes part of your relationship. Your actions and reactions will determine what direction you decide to go, whether is it alone or together.

The main issues are a simple matter of love and respect, just because you don't "like / enjoy / understand / care about" your significant others choices doesn't mean you can't "let them enjoy it / be supportive / be encouraging".

If something is important to you, it will be important to them because it is important to you.

*Side note: also an ex WOW player =)

  • Thanks for the congrats ladies!

@Korinne – I forgot to mention, yes I am part of the Mynx group =) Love Michelle to pieces, she is a wonderful instructor, super friendly and sweet lady, and I have mad respect for her. She led the way for St Louis pole classes, I hope I can follow in her footsteps and be a great leader in our pole community.

@Ive8899 Before this, I worked at a pole studio for the past 3 years as sales and as an instructor. I'm also a licensed and nationally certified massage therapist, and I've worked for spas and myself over the past few years too. I also work for my husband's software firm in sales and customer service. =) I'm a jack of all trades! But it's great because now I can use all my skills in one job! LOL.

@Reenie – Please add me on fb too =)

@Leesi – Thank you so much! I plan on ordering some pole silks, and offering classes in a few months too =) Would LOVE LOVE to have you come teach a workshop if you ever want to come visit. I will definitely be trying to come back to Denver this year and see you again!
