I may have to ask my classes about this…because I use the words "thick thighs" ALL THE TIME!! To me, in context of instructing, it's no more than a description, not a derogatory term.

This is definitely one of those, "it's not what you say, but how you say it"…but I think it also depends on the person getting the critique.

As an instructor…with thicker legs…I get what the sub was trying to explain. From what I read here…there were other contributing factors to why she was having difficulties executing the move this particular night. So, although we may feel insulted for her, I would have had to be there in order to judge the context.

ALL that being said, this move is considered an "advance move" am I right? So it's a move that has to be executed by someone that not only has some skills, but also one that has been poling for a bit. It would seem to me, that she's probably already aware of what her body does and how she goes about to modify her technique in order to execute the move.

So if I were put into that position…I would not take it personally. But then, I'm obnoxious and annoyingly positive…and have worked hard enough to get thru my own made up barriers…that I try to see any critique as a chance to better myself…even if it's just improving the way I let role off my back.

Hey honey…you can give me a call anytime for my perspective as a curvy dancer/instructor. There's a fine line in approaching women regarding their fitness level be it due to age or weight.

I can tell you for sure…it is STILL 90% mental on how we curvier girls limit ourselves. And just because we don't get a move right away…does not mean we can't do it.

I've been with Mary Ellyn from the beginning…and she has NEVER made me feel as if I was limited due to my weight…and even now as I've shed allot of weight…I'm still curvy and have no problems reiterating to my students that if I can, they can!

You rock for being so cognisant of how sensitive this can get! I commend you! xoxo

I love a balance of both…I disagree with Charley…You DO have a great flow of both! I’m a dancer. I do flow, I do move my body naturally. But honestly…I don’t have more pole tricks simply because I don’t feel good enough to flow them into my dance. That’s what I’m working on right now. Not that I cant do them…I just want them to flow as naturally as a transition…without pause. It’s a challenge…especially when you are into your music, and mostly freestyle…it’s hard to throw a trick in there. But thats the great part of poling..to challenge yourself out of your comfort zone.

What other things do you do for strenghth? It doesn’t have to be just poling…but it will all benefit your poling.
