Thanks everybody! I’ve been almost 3 weeks off the pole now and I’m feeling almost perfect. Just with very specific movements I still feel a very slight soreness, I wouldn’t call it pain. What I’m planning on doing, besides the conditioning (2-3 times a week) and getting enough rest, is to focus on “sexy” pole (feet on the ground, half spins at most) and floorwork until I’m certain I can go back to the tricks. And frankly, I love the sexy face of pole, so no problem with this :-). I have had massages from a good therapist, but she is not a chiropractor. I will go to the chiropractor if the pain persists. I believe all came from overuse, I was attending classes, purchased my own pole and starting practicing at home too… I got too excited I guess. Well, lesson learned!

Cat, take it easy. I know it sucks when you are injured and cannot do what you want to do – been there both with running and dancing. I also know it’s best to rest and take things very, very slowly. Get back gradually, assuring it doesn’t hurt and allowing plenty of time for recovery. If you try to speed up the recovery process, it may end up taking longer in the end. Again, been there and learned from my experience. In my opinion, it’s best a week of full rest and back to normal, than a month of half rest and half normal. Also, trust your instincts. If you think that what’s being taught in the classes is too much for your condition (climb), don’t do it. Usually, the body sends signs (a discomfort here and there) before something major happens… Good luck!

Hi Tracy, I’m not a professional either but I have been working out since I was a teenager, so I have some knowledge about training plans and fitness in general. Your schedule sounds balanced, however I am missing two things: 1) core specific training, key for pole (besides what’s included in Veena’s lessons) and 2) cardio. I know that cardio can hinder muscle growth if that’s your goal, but it is also very healthy, so you might want to consider adding 3-4 sessions a week after you lifts: 20 minutes steady, 30 minutes interval and something longer about 45 minutes. With regard to upper body training, I would focus on conditioning the small muscles that are usually overlooked in body building, specially rotator cuffs and forearms. Hope this helps!

Besides, I practice what I’m taught in my studio classes and run 3-4 times a week. BTW, my shoulder soreness has improved, it may be that I’m staring to get used or becoming stronger for pole 🙂 Thanks for the comments!

I like Shot in the Dark by Within Temptation, it has different phases. Wrecking ball by Miley Circus, Hunting High and Low by A-ha. I’m afraid none is too sexy.

I agree with the responses too. Personally, I find much more attractive a more basic dance that flows and conveys (sexiness, sadness, whatever) than a bunch of amazing tricks glued together. I would add, think about what you enjoy and are good at – it may be spins, poses, floorwork, flexibility; and try to focus and make the most of that. If you think of famous polers like Cleo or Alethea, they have their own signature style, I guess based on what’s natural and works for her bodies.

Music tastes are very personal, it’s difficult to make a recommendation.
There are several playlists in Spotify for strip/pole/exotic that you can scan for your perfect song, here are a few links:

But I have to say that the strength I gained with weights it does help, I can do the pole hold for several seconds now! I’m not heavy overall but bottom heavy – so my thin upper body needs to bear the load of the lower half. I think it would help if your body shape is the opposite – strong upper and thin lower.

Yes, it sounds like we are pole twins, I have background in dance too: salsa, ballet, belly dance”:-) I agree, it seems that traditional weightlifting does not condition the small muscles in the upper body for the demands on the pole. I will follow your advice. I started yesterday with the scapula stabilization and other conditioning exercises.
I’ve had my share of injuries being a runner, nothing too serious but annoying. So I want to take things slowly and be safe with pole. I also remember that when I started running, I was used to other types of exercises (spin, zumba, et.) but my body really hurt until it got used to running. I guess pole will be the same, the soreness will disappear eventually. Good luck!

MemberNovember 28, 2015 at 6:16 pm in reply to: Beginner at pole, but seasoned in other exercises? Thanks Veena! I think I will follow the take off program, but not to the letter. I will focus specially on understanding the pole fundamentals, but I may add more strength/conditioning and keep practicing the basic pole and floor work twice or three times a week. Plus flexibility every other day and running three times a week. I hope I’m able to find the balance and not over do it 🙂
