I agree about the audience being silent, but maybe it's just because this is what we are used to. You don't hear people shouting during ballet performances, for example, but then they express their appreciation afterwards.
I also think that the noise can be distracting for the dancer. I find it hard to concentrate when people are cheering around me…

Personally, when I practice, I always alternate sides (I try with my right side and once with my left side and then with my right side etc..), even if it feels awkward and one side never succeeds. I feel that it keeps me from getting too unbalanced, and sometimes I discover moves that are easier to do on my "weak" side as well.
Beside that, as you progress you will probably need to be able to do basic moves on both sides, because some truely advanced moves will reqiure it in order to get int/out of.

My teacher is about your height, I think, and she does this…

Maybe if you upload a video we'll be able to help…

After they finish picking their jaw off the floor, they usually change their mind.
If they insist, I show them some malakhamb and chinese pole. If they say they can't break the connection between pole and stripping in their head, I show then some rhythmic gymnasts and ask them what's the difference.
Most people get it at this point.

@KuriKat: My team mates at work know. But I'm "strange" so no one is too surprised no matter what I do…

Fun read 🙂
I'm a programmer and a programming instructor. Currently I strudy for my BSc in Math and Computer Science, in hope to develop a research career. I love my field, and I am passionate about my job. I love what I do, and in all honesty – I feel like I'm being paid to play with my favorite toys, which is fun 🙂

🙂 Look at the move Amy calls cradle in her vid when you get the chance, it will make perfect sense 😉

@chemgoddess1 Oh, sorry – Amy called this move "cradle" in one of her posts, so I assumed it's a standard name 🙂 I looked at Veena's lessons:
https://www.studioveena.com/lessons/view/4cd2ab43-f938-48c5-a66b-5a980ac37250
But I was thinking about this (slightly different) variation:
http://aerialamy.com/blog/2012/05/10/thursday-tricks-superman-to-cradle/
and then the transition from Dekota's vid (4:35):

Anyway – you could go to cradle from side V easily (same hold, different leg position), but it doesn't make much sense to move to superman from the fetus position in the images you posted…

Put the hand of the leg that is on the pole below your body, the other one above you, streighten your legs – cradle 🙂
