This is a move that needs a lot of core strength, especially to get up there without jumping.
Coming down the same way doesn’t hurt me, but that will depend on your shoulder flexibility and how controlled coming back down is. Hooking your feet on and sitting up is a good option to build ab strength.
Here’s a vid, tis an old one from when I first learnt pencil mount (I call it an iguana) but it does what it says on the tin really.

Yeah, I found it really difficult to relax my shoulder muscles while pulling with my arms, and that caused me quite a bit of pain initially. I found the princess grip worked far better for me than the double cupped grip and once I had that sorted it was a lot better for me. Experiment with a couple of grips and see if you have any preference. I’ve found shoulder mount grips to be such a personal preference. My instructor learnt shoulder mounds using chinese forward grip and that one scares the life out of me. Same with the grip I use, some of my friends think it feels so weird and they don’t like it.
"Prances" are a good way to prep for shoulder mount, but please take it slowly and when you think you are ready try it from sitting on the floor with plenty of mats and preferably a spotter too.

Personally, I’d avoid any pole which says it "slots together", I’ve heard tales of people who have had their skin pinched and scratched by these types of joins.
As for the Carmen Electra pole, I know a girl on another forum who got given one and it took her 10 minutes to break it. I know it’s really tempting to go for the cheap option, I was myself when I first started learning but now I’m really glad I waited and saved up for an X-pole. For one thing, I know it’s completely safe and I can trust it when upside down.
After all, I know you said you’re a beginner now, but soon you’ll be progressing and wanting to go onto more difficult spins and start working on inverts, and for that you’ll want a safer pole, like an X. So really it’s best to save up and go for quality rather than paying out for a cheap pole then having to buy another pole later. I can sympathise, especially as I’m a student currently (and was when I was having to save up to buy my X), it does seem like a big dent in the old bank account but it is 100% worth it.
Also X-poles really hold their value, so if for any reason in the future you didn’t want to pole anymore then you can sell it.

Ok, firstly which is your gemini? Is it your outside or inside leg which is hooked on to the pole?
If it’s the outside one, I’ve struggled with that one too and can only do it if I pull my top up so my belly and sides are uncovered. that way you get the side gripping, it just provides an extra point of contact. Also make sure the pole is right in the crook of the knee and try to point the lower leg downwards

By split do you mean legs in straddle?
I found the key to this one is a high caterpillar into it, that was when it suddenly clocked for me at least. Have a competent spotter for this one

Doing a normal reverse grab is damn near impossible on a spinny pole. Here’s a trick off the great Deb Riley, just walk round the pole instead of the initial swing around the pole, get your hands in position and then push your feet off the ground.

Yeah, spinny sounds like it’d be a lot easier, but it needs a great deal of strength, especially as the closer your body is to the pole the faster you spin, the faster you spin the more you want to pull yourself into the pole for dear life, so the faster you spin again. Hello everyone, nice topic, and its interesting to read about everyone’s favorites! Theres too many possibilities as far as combos that I like, so I’m really undecided….I love the combo in this video at 2:50 (superman w/ undulations, leading to starfish, flatline, and exiting with inverted V legs. It’s a tough one! I’m still working on a sexy undulation and that transition from the flatline to V legs. I LOVE IT!!!
Oooh, nice find! I’ve seen Alena Downs do the superman to flatline combo, but it was a really fast flip into it. Oh, I do understand your position, it must be difficult being so far away from instructors. Is there any chance of doing real time online lessons via Skype? That’s the next best thing. I don’t know if Veena offers such a service at the moment?

Oh, don’t mind me, hehe. It’s just I know a lot of people who won’t even post written advice about this move online. No matter what disclaimers, big neon flashing signs saying "don’t do it" etc there’ll always be at least one person who will try it before they’re ready for it and hurt themselves. I think it’s imperative for a instructor to be in the room for this one because they are the ones who can watch you do your preps and say "yes, you’re ready" or "No, you need to stick to the preps for now"
