This drives me crazy, I don’t approve. I think it’s irresponsible and risky to say the least. The studio I teach for allows alcohol at parties. The owner is booked SOLID from Friday afternoon – Saturday night and on occasion Sunday “brunch”. The owner doesn’t exactly make a killing on classes because she doesn’t charge enough and she’s dependent on group-on sales every month and pole is seasonal (attendance goes way down during the summer months). What pays the rent are her boutique items, online lingerie store, and parties.
These parties have little to do with pole dancing. These girls want to get their drink on, eat greasy food, take sassy pictures to post on Facebook and have a good time. They are super excited in the beginning but after the warm up, they have this glazed look, they’re exhausted and can barely walk and do a spin. “This is harder than I thought” is the typical response. Probably less than 5% ever come back to take class. It has little to do with pole dancing as we know it in class. It’s income for her but like you said, a law suit waiting to happen. It’s a risk she’s willing to take apparently.

MemberApril 24, 2014 at 12:13 am in reply to: conflict of interest for instructor to visit competition?I’m in the same boat with my “boss.” I’ve been teaching at the same studio for 4 years. I live literally 5 minutes from the studio, so it’s über convenient. The owner has a very limited point of view, refuses to spend any money on improvements and doesn’t understand pole as an industry is changing all the time nor her students. The studio opened 5 years ago. The studio has no mirrors (well a small one, on the side), 9 poles, 50mm all static. As an instructor, I LOVE teaching, the majority of the students are beginner and intermediate level, so this is not a huge problem for teaching but for me personally, I’m dying a slow death. Meanwhile, 5 new studios have opened in the area, all of which offer state of the art equipment and facilities. The owner doesn’t approve of me venturing out of her studio who is stuck in a time warp, She told me once “I should learn all I need learn at her studio,” but I don’t care. I’m an independent contractor, not an employee anyway. This is a touchy subject and I need to voice my frustration, can you tell?
I go to other studios, gyms, I attend different dance classes, yoga, aerial silks and lyra, I actively travel to other pole studios and I take workshops year round. This makes me a better teacher, a better dancer and a better performer. All of which I impart my knowledge to others. It’s healthy. We’re a community, there’s enough business for everyone. Only small minded people think they own students, moves or styles. The goal is to grow and spiral upward not fall and hold people down.

That is sooooo coooool “WebMaster”. I’ve been trying for years to get my husband on the pole, silks what have you, he is such a good athlete. He’s a former gymnast, world frisbee champ and awesome golfer now! but it’s just out of his comfort zone, way too much for him. I love seeing other men working the pole for fitness even though I’m jealous of their strength! Now you can commiserate with all of us about our pole woes, welcome to the club!

When I dance, pole, do other aerial art I feel AGELESS! I feel like the kid on the playground messin’ around having fun with complete freedom. Of course I’m not the bendiest or strongest dancer/poler out there but I don’t care, I listen to my body and move however I want, in that moment. There are good days and challenging days but I’m addicted to the fun of it all. It’s almost a problem cause that’s all I think about…”when’s the next time I can I invert again?” 🙂 happy poling peeps.

If your legs are sore because you’re using them more than you think. All the exercises you described require leg strength too. Contracting the leg muscles for balance, stability and lifting them for chopper or V leg requires you to use those major muscles. So it’s not a surprise your legs are sore.
Water and rest. Help

Thank you for sharing. I love to hear David’s point of view, a great ambassador for our art. Solid advice and questions to think about as our community changes and grows. I still have video from his workshop and refer back to his technique. Plus sign and back to back jade are my favorites. If he comes near your town, book him. He’s so worth the time and money.
One note, we held a small showcase and sold tickets to the public (brownpapertickets.com), a little local TV mention and we sold out 300 seats. We had aerial silks, lyra and pole. There were plenty of older folks in the crowd too, who know very little of our world. We gave a chunk to charity too so, I think the public is open, curious and supportive to aerial arts. Happy Poling peeps.

Laughed so hard. Loved it because she was so carefree about it.

Which only validates how freaking difficult pole is, and she's a gold winning Olympian. Stupid media.

I teach too and recently started teaching pole choreography because some girls like myself are bored to tears of just going to "gymnastics" class, Learning new trendy tricks is fine but if you never put them together to music what is the point? Choreography is super hard and it is a ton of work because, as you know, you have to think about the music, the mood and how to string together sequences that fit and make sense. You have to be creative and dig deep.
Having said that, I do use 8 counts, otherwise I'd get lost or forget. I need to anchor on an 8 count sequence. It gives my brain structure. It is a bit robotic at first, but by repeating 8 counts over and over, it eventually helps my body's muscle memory and then it BECOMES my dance, and I can flow and fully express myself "let go". I've noticed that even though we are all moving together, we all look different. Everyone has their own unique style. There is no right or wrong when it come to dance. Your student is just coming from a traditional school of "dance" and some people prefer and respond better to that style.

Today is my birthday. I'm 53 and just taught 3 classes tonight. Most all of my girls are 20-30 years younger than me. I'm just as strong, flexible, and talented as they are. Even more so because they expect me to teach and challenge them. They keep me on my toes and I love every second. I don't think too much about age when I pole dance. I feel timeless and connected to who I am regardless. Happy poling everyone.
