I love the idea of being able to feel the music and lyric and actually dance WITH it if you know what I mean. I guess I got the idea from watching too many episodes of So You Think You Can Dance (they even had a pole number this year!) but just in general, whenever I see someone perform and it looks artistic and their musicality is just ON POINT it usually because they are also a really good lyrical/Contemporary dancer. Plus it gives you all the same flexibility and strength as ballet but I'd imagine you wouldn't come into any problems being "stiff" as you mentioned since the whole point of contempo is to be able to move with the music!
Just my two cents 🙂

PoleAndAerial.com lessons?I agree that the 'community' aspect of this site is a HUGE postiive for me so I don't see myself giving it up anytime soon lol and yes I totally am intrigued by the "Pole Star" aspect of P&A but I'll probably try their free lessons thingy when I have the time and then get over it lolol.
As for the free trials, I honestly just randomly came across her advertising it one day and asked her personally about it over on Facebook and she gave me a code. I vaguely remember seeing it advertised once or twice in the year I've been here but I don't frequent this site often (enough). You should ask her personally if there's any deals going on right now, she was super sweet and answered pretty promptly when I approached her!

MemberDecember 8, 2012 at 3:06 pm in reply to: Studio Veena v. PoleAndAerial.com lessons?Haven't heard of/tried PoleandArial.com either (although I just checked it out and HOLY SHIT) but I ha a 3 day free trial of SV and loved every second of it. The prices here are way reasonable and affordable (and I keep meaning to sign up but unfortunately that thought is always thrown by the wayside once bills come in) and I love how she breaks down not only what your "contact points" are in relation to the pole but also what muscles you're working out. I've been stretching for various reasons practically my whole life and I was shocked at how many basic moves I've been doing wrong this whole time.
TL;DR – P&A seems cool, what with the featured instructors and whatnot but $249 for a year is waay too pricey for me and it doesn't seem to have as much of a 'community' feel as SV so, SV all the way, baby!

I LOVED all these links. Belly dancing is definitely something I'd love to try one day. Although I have to be 100% honest…some of these comments about chubby vs thin are kind of off-putting :/ By everyone's standard I'm very thin. For my height, I'm not underweight (I don't think) and I definitely eat like a pig which is irrelevent since I love my body regardless, but I'd hate to join a class thinking "omg, no one will ever think I look good doing this because I'm so thin!". I mean at the end of the day we all have our own opinions and I do what I wanna do but I just get so discouraged with how callously people throw around comments sometimes and I can't lie, it does feed some of my insecurities, and I'm sure I'm not the only one…I guess I would probably look emaciated compared to a typical "model" seeing as I'm 5'2 and slightly less than 100 lbs. Ok, I'm thin. So what? There are so many things to consider when it comes to weight and I don't think you can know the full story just by looking at someone so there's probably no point in trying to put a label on what you see.
Like most people mentioned above, I don't think size matters as long as you have the skills and confidence to back it up!

Is everyone going with somebody? It was a bit iffy at first but I think I'll actually get a chance to go but it will have to be alone since I don't know anyone here and my friend will most likely have her own plans. I wouldn't mind going alone maybe if I knew what to expect but I don't want to look like a loser at a table all alone or something haha. Besides, I wanted to meet some of SV friends there but obviously I wouldn't really be able to recognize anyone from a hole in the wall. Maybe we could set something up to meet up and go together?

Hmmm…It's interesting how so many people have experienced only 2/pole classes! I've never had to share a pole and to be honest I would not have a good reaction to it if I had to all of a sudden :/ I don't know why, I get really posessive of the pole and I spend every second of the class on it, I don't want to take breaks (even if sometime's I may need one). I'm also really shy so the thought of walking into a class and having to share with another girl would be mortifying to me 🙁 This is just me sharing my experience and thoughts (just to give it from a different perspective, not to bring you down or anything). As for your dilemma, I completely agree with the others though. Some of these suggestions are really good! Especially being concious of going to see every student individually to ensure they can't blame slow progress on the 2/pole.

Random song ideas;
If you like Britney Spears, theres a super slow sensual version of her Toxic song it's so amazing;

Also, I've always wanted to do a choreography to Rihanna's S&M but the version featuring Britney Spears, I could live vicariously through you if you did your routine to that LOL
As for slow/fast rock songs…I don't know much about rock music other than indie rock so I would suggest looking at Metric (favourite song "On a Slow Night"). My former dance instructer used to love to dance to Florence and the Machine.
Umm That's all I can think of for now, hope it helps!

I agree with Layla, thanks for creating this space for us! You deserve the best!

Is there anywhere in Ontario you can just walk in and buy Tite Grip? I tried it for the first time the other day and just about died of happiness (no more sweaty hands!) but I don't feel like getting something that costs less than 10$ shipped out :/

Thanks! I looked it up and they actually have a drop in tomorrow so I might check it out!

Thanks so much! I'll look them up! The thing about 50mm poles is that I can't do things like Gemini or Scorpio on them because I can't get a good enough grip with my knee (let alone even fully wrap my hands around the pole) and then with the 38mm pole I can't grip the pole in between my thighs. I'm pretty tiny so that could be it :/ It's kind of a bummer because I looveed Aradia the one time I visited but ah well. Maybe once I'm more experienced I could handle 50mm poles and jam at your place for sure! I've been looking for a pole buddy here in Toronto :p
