My inverts are actually better because I am more confident in my grip. I can see doing like a layback might be tough if you have skinny thighs but mine are chunky enough to get good grip.
My poor grip made my progression SO SLOW and half of my problem was that I never felt confident with my hand grip to do a lot of the fun tricks or spins. Now that I have a skinnier pole (and a brass one which has great grippiness too) I can pole more often at home with less fear and therefore can progress at a normal pace! If at this point in your poling you know that 45mm is too big, get the 40. I first bought a 50 because I got it on eBay but that was terrible. Then I bought a 45 and told myself this was fine because the studio I went to used it, and then I realized that I was never going to get better if I was scared my hand grip wasn’t strong enough for inverted tricks, so I finally got my 40mm (after like 2 years!).

I had a 45mm for a long time and wasn’t progressing as much as I wanted. veena talked me into a brass 40mm and I am SO GLAD I bought it. Definitely has helped me a lot! The studio I go to has 45mm and I can still use them but at home I can feel a lot more confident with my 40mm.

I’m still totally a beginner though– trying to improve on inverts and such but it would be so cool to play in the park one day!! Please let us know if you really want to do this!

In SF I’ve only tried Studio Botan and they are okay but pretty pricey! They have good workshops but I’m not really into their regular classes. They’re fairly conservative so if you’re a beginner/intermediate they don’t let you do many daring inversions. If you’re pretty advanced though definitely check them out because I feel like they cater to that level much more. A 10-class series is about $220 I think.
I would not recommend Phoenix Aerial in Berkeley either even though they have a groupon. I liked their contortion classes but I wasn’t into the pole classes.
Right now I go to Atomic Allure in Oakland because it is affordable (half the price of Botan), close to me (I live in Oakland) but it has its ups and downs too– like they don’t take care of their poles so they’re all scratched up and a little slippery. But they’re fun and are encouraging for beginners like me so I enjoy going there.
I’ve heard good things about Poletential but they’re further down the peninsula. I met a girl who went to Shelly’s and she said it’s a pretty small operation and a little pricey but has good instructors.
Hope that helps!

This is a great idea! I’d love to do this. I’m still sort of a beginner, only recently started inverting and would like to be in this Skype meeting too! My schedule changes a lot each week so I hope to make it to at least one stretch meeting!

Ill investigate the possibility of getting replacement parts instead of the whole pole. Powder coating sounds interesting too so I may look into that! I thought my post would just get ignored but I’m happy to see so many replies! The pole community is so awesome, I am so thrilled to become a part of it!
