Hmm…I think I'll get in touch with the manufacturer of my house, and see what they have to say about the ceiling joists. I'm sure I'd probably be fine screwing into one of the joist things there, especially if I didn't do anything jolting, but I'm just really nervous about the whole thing. My pole seems to be doing just fine, but that's a little different than suspending my entire body weight on one screw in one board…

I didn't think about the snow loads though. i don't know how the ceiling is constructed. I'll just have to ask them. I have a guy who's supposed to be coming out to do a few repairs soon anyway. He should (hopefully) know more about it than I do!

Haha Chemgoddess I never doubted that you did. I actually had thought about doing just that, but hadn't gotten around to it yet. What do you mean by a joist, though? I'm so not knowledgeable about this stuff. Is that just a beam in the ceiling? The only reason I'm concerned about that is because on their website they specifically say to not use the 2×4's in your ceiling, as they are not strong enough to support that weight. But perhaps there are two types in ceilings, and I just have to find the right one?

Haha sorry for my complete and total lack of ceiling awareness!

Haha yea, I'm sure 90% of my "freestyle" stuff at home looks horrendous, but it feels good. And that's all we really want, right?

I hadn't really thought of it that way, though. You're absolutely right. It is challenging, but in a good way. It's hard to learn to move in a way that feels natural to music that we're not used to, but trying a different genre of music sometimes can open up new ideas and new styles of movement to us. Maybe I'll play with that some more at home…try dancing to something that's just totally different from my personality every once in a while, and see what comes out. 😀

I wanted to see if anyone else had an opinion about how previous dance styles affect your music choices. I have danced lindy hop and blues for quite a while, before starting pole. While I definitely notice my blues background in pole (movement wise), and the groundedness that comes from lindy, the biggest thing is my music choices. I am used to moving to vintage jazz and blues, and have a hard time figuring out how to dance to the more common pole music. I notice it especially in classes. When I'm at home, I can freestyle all I want, because I choose the music. As soon as I get to class and they want us to just dance to a song to warm up or end class or anything, I'm totally lost because I just haven't figured out how to dance to other types of music.

I was just curious if anyone had experienced something like that, more than just not enjoying or feeling the music, but just not being used to dancing to a particular style because of your background. If that makes any sense. Perhaps I'm just overthinking this…

Pumpkin is really good for keeping your BM’s nice and on schedule, as well. Either a capsule from a health food stood, or just a small bite of canned pumpkin can work wonders.

You are all, of course, right. I went in last night after ballet and just put on some music. I still wasn't really feeling it in the beginning, but I eventually started feeling a little more comfortable. Lost myself for a couple seconds at a time.

AND, as I didn't have any alcohol I used some vinegar to clean my pole for the first time, and that seems to have finally cleared off the last of the factory coating. So now I can finally climb it! That did wonders for my confidence and happiness. 🙂

LaRouge, I really like your idea, too. I think if I just start spending some more time in my new pole space and get used to it, I'll start feeling a lot better in there. I'll try hanging out in there tonight after yoga and see what happens. 🙂

I can't do a pull up…yet. But I've been working through these, and it seems to be helping me quite a bit. I like how systematic it is. Baby steps, all the way. 🙂

I just moved from Parker! Hoping to be back soon though, so there's that… Haha

Like PFM suggested, definitely check out 3SixT. That's where I started. All the girls there are fantastic, and they've got a lot of awesome classes.

Boulder Spirals is also great if you're willing to do the drive every once in a while, especially if you're interested in things other than pole (like aerial yoga).

I'll definitely be looking into your lessons here, once I have my pole back. I found that studio in Bismarck online. I emailed her, so we'll see what happens! Thanks so much!

I'm living in Dickinson. I found the studio in Fargo, but that's a little to far to be driving all the time. I didn't know about the studio in Bismarck though! I'll definitely have to try and find it. My boyfriend and I drive out there every other week or so, when we just need to be in an actual city, so perhaps that could be my pole time for now. Haha it was quite a change moving from Denver to Dickinson. We're still adjusting. 😉

I've had my mirena since February, and I am SO happy I went with it. I was on the mini pill for a while, but with school and work and everything, I eventually started keeping track of it less and less, and taking it at different times. I didn't want to have to stress out about it, so I started looking into other things.

First thing I tried was the nuva ring, because a friend had one and she convinced me it was the best thing ever….That lasted about 10 days for me. I was HORRIBLY allergic to it, and ended up with pretty much all the annoying (but overall fairly minor) possible side-effects, and got rid of that thing real quick. And I couldn't manage to get it positioned right the entire time I had it, so it just hurt the whole time.

That was when I started seeing my current doctor, who I finally asked to put me on mirena. She said she isn't sure why doctors are even prescribing nuva ring, as it's got all kinds of little issues. But anyway…she put me on mirena, and I have barely thought about it since. No kids for me, so it did hurt quite a bit get put in. She couldn't get my cervix to dilate for a while too, which just made it worse. But it really isn't anything to be overly concerned about. I'm a pretty big weenie, and I got through it just fine. The first few months I had pretty normal periods. Worse cramps than I had before it was put in, but same flow and same timing. Then they just started tapering off. Now I get some spotting every other month or so, and go on with life. My boyfriend doesn't notice the strings, unless I ask him to check them for me…two birds with one stone, right? 😉 Overall, I'm so SO pleased.

And, as a side note, my doctor told me that the mirena is approved for 5 years, but has been proven to be effective for 7. Not that I'm necessarily recommending it, but it's maybe worth mentioning to your doc. I plan on keeping mine for 7.
