Yes you can do it from a cradle, however I always seem to smash my hip that way. LOL. I like doing it from a butterfly. In a butterfly, lower your extended leg as you bring your head a lil more paralell with the floor as your lowered leg now hooks on the pole. Your bottom arm pretty much stays in the same spot on the pole. I doubt I explained that one right but good luck. πŸ™‚

  • At my studio, we don't allow minors to dress like those 7 year olds because that outfit is considered inappropriate. My husband will not even allow me to wear something like that in public or a pole comp. LOL! We also don't allow minors to do bodywaves, hip circles, air humping or boob touching like those 7 year olds did. But I thought those ballet twirls were cool. That video disturbs me.

What if you started from the floor first until you are really comfortable with it?

Lay your back down on the floor. Prop your bum up on the pole (you would feel the pole near your tail bone). Cross ankles and squeeze with thighs. Then try doing crunches, lifting your upper body off the floor. You can even reach the pole and then go into a pole sit.

This way you are not far from the floor if you fall. This helped me build strengh in my core as well as my inner thighs so that I could hold on.

Is this a grip issue? Do you need to put  mightygrip or dryhands or something in between your thighs? If I am not warmed up or at least a tiny bit sweaty, then I find it hard to grip the pole with my legs.

    Good luck. πŸ™‚

  • I think the pole dance community will be fighting this one for a few more years to come until society fully understands. To be honest.. if I had not had the experience in teaching kids pole myself, I probably would of thought it was wrong too. I was really nervous over the idea to help teach kids at my studio but after the first 5 minutes, I relaxed. Why? Because I was able to see just how innnocent it was. I tell a lot of people, if they think it's wrong, then they gotta see it for themselves just how circusy and not sexy it is. And I love Jess! WOW! She's so awesome. πŸ™‚

What about 'pole'go dancing' ? Like go go dancing  but pole? I feel the same way Harlett. I wanna be a stripper but I don't want to touch men or do hard core shows. I'd just wanna sexy pole dance! Unfortunatly I don't live in an area where they have clubs where girls don't get nude or do contact shows. They are mainly lap dancing bars. And the strippers must get naked. So it would never work for me here. I've been looking into pole go dancing because I thought that would be fun except there isn't much here for that also. πŸ™ Good luck! Maybe you will find something that suits you. And never do anything your uncomfortable with. πŸ™‚

    Interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

Makes me wonder.. when we invert, it's not for that much time right? Maybe for a few minutes off and on for a span of an hour? It's not like we are hanging up side down continuously for hours and hours. So I would just assume that inverting a couple times while having a period shouldn't be enough to cause worry?

Now wanna here some TMI? πŸ˜› Poleing with a pad on is impossible and wearing tampons seems to get pushed out when I do lots of inversions (particularly in a routine), LMFAO! Does anyone else have this problem? I find that I have to go to the bathroom to adjust if you know what I mean. Its so annoying. So on heavy days I just take a break from the pole otherwise it gets frustrating. :p

Sorry to heave about your painful crams, Lizzy. Min get pretty painful toosometimes and have to resort to an advil. πŸ™

It wasn't like amateur and pro were defined. I guess maybe I should of clairified that before applying.

@ and @ Awww thanks ladies. No I didn't even make the cut. I had applied for pro only because I was comparing myself to some of the contestants from last year and for some reason I thought I may fit into that category. I don't think mpdc saw my application video until Aug 2nd because they had contacted me about difficulty downloading it. By that time, amateur division was already done and selected. Oh well that's okay. πŸ™‚ It's all a learning experience for me. I don't think my application video was that strong enough. I didn't really 'dance', I just performed some pole tricksto show the gist of what I could do. I didn't want to show too much because I wanted to save some for the stage. It's all a learning experiece. I'm just gonna train even harder and try again next year. πŸ™‚

I had raised over 700$ (all refunded now) in donations to help cover the cost of transportaion for mpdc and what not. I feel honored that there were a lot of people who wanted me there. This just inspires me to try harder for next year. I don't care about winning the title or anything, but just to be a part of that whole pole competition experience would be a dream come true. πŸ™‚

Rumor has it that there's gonna be something in Toronto this fall but I don't think I can give out details just yet. Shhh.. I've already been promised that I'll be performing this fall in Toronto.. stay tuned. πŸ™‚

I also suffer from anxiety (really bad) and depression. I have a prescription for Prozac and Lorazapam (for emergencies) but I choose not to take them. I used to be on Zoloft, then Luvox a decade ago for a few years but had nothing but bad luck and bad side effects. I try my best to treat my mental health in a natural way but it's hard. I'm very against meds only because I had such a bad experience. They are also very dangerous meds with dangerous side effects too. I honestly think antidepressants have an opposite effect on me causing me to get even more depressed. Funny someone mentioned the green herb. I sometimes use it to treat my illness. It's the only thing I have found to work to stop general anxiety or stop a panic attack. I would have just a little and suddenly all my worries are GONE and I'm happy dancing around listening to music and then I can finally FOCUS! Sleeping pills suck and don't work on me but herb helps me have the best sleep and rest of my life. My brother has a legal license to use that herb. I'm considering trying to get it only because I wouldn't want to be busted in a legal matter. I've done my research on the plant. I used to be very against herb over a decade ago until I did my own research. My doctor even told me it's safe. πŸ™‚

I hope there are more. I’ve been throwing around the idea about a miss pole dance Ontario. We have a large southern ontario pole community and I think it would do well. Does anyone know if miss pole dance Alberta is only for those living in Alberta?

My iguana mount is horribly ugly. I feel I'm either not flexible enough or have the core strength to lift myself up. I can currently do it with a big jump into it and that looks really sloppy. Any tips? πŸ™‚

June 27, 2011 at 5:19 pm in reply to: The evil knee hold!!

This one took me a long time to learn. I was using chair for a month. I felt like I just didn't have the leg strength and core strength to hold me there. I did lots of polebliques (one knee pit on pole, other foot close to base, extend out and do side crunches) did a lot for me to build up strength. I had been able to do knee holds for 8 months now but just last month I figured out how to do them aerially. Before it was always off the floor. Best of luck. πŸ™‚
