Me too!  I just turned 35 and I'm damn proud of what this body can do!

Ah, pole and research librarianship.  I love it when my worlds collide!  🙂

  • Well, she was in the Master's division, which is 40 and up.  Maybe she just hit the wrong year when creating her account.  I don't think you can change it.

Yeah, definitely check out Mattcrobat and Swift Ali from Jasmine Dragaons.  It could also be this guy, Evgeny Greshilov.  Another Russian dancer.

As for his concern about being seen as gay, remind him that hanging out with a bunch of uninhibited, scantily clad women is unlikely to draw scorn from his peers.  😉

Here's a post from a research blog.  It contains citations from primary sources at the end.  I think it also answers your question about the term "exotic" dancers.  HIstorically, the women who performed these dances were from (or advertised as from) exotic locations, such as the middle east, India or Romania (gypsies).  While audiences enjoyed being titillated, no one wanted to think that "good" European descended American women would do such things.

You could try wearing a pair of microfiber seamless undies under them.  Black would be barely noticeable, or you could have some sexy red or hot pink peaking out.

Neither Pantera nor Aerial Amy do the TG handspring.  Amy has a great blog post about it.

She also has a post about not every trick being right for every person, but I couldn't find it.

I find playing up the artistry aspect helps too.  If I'm talking to someone who I know might not "get it", I have Natasha Wang's Black Swan performance ready and waiting on my phone.  Very few people can watch that and not be awed.

I also have a stubborn belly.  It's genetic for me too, everyone in my dad's family carries their weight in their middle.  It has been steadily decreasing, but it is slow.  I was just clearing old photos off my phone and saw some pics from about a year ago and realized how much I had changed.  That was encouraging.  Bust out some old pics from 30 lbs ago and congratulate yourself!  It's actually very motivating.  As for exercise, I love the boot camp class at my gym.  It provides cardio and strength training all in one, but mostly I just like having a group to work out with.  Keeps me from cutting corners.  Just try to find something that you don't hate.  As they say, the best exercise is the one that you DO!

Nutrition-wise, if you have the resources, see a dietician!  They can tailor an eating plan specifically to your needs and you know that it will be healthy.  There's so much information and mis-information out there that it can be almost impossible to wade through it on your own.

And my one "diet" tip:  I am obsessed with Greek yogurt.  I've been making my own salad dressing with it using powdered dressing mix, Greek yogurt, a little vinegar and skim milk to thin it out.  I LOVE giant salads, but dressing always packs on the fat and calories.  Making my own means that instead of making my salads unhealhier, the dressing is actually adding nutrition, since Greek yogurt is so high in protein.

I had the same problem.  I remember inverting, going through the the steps to get into position, and then realizing it was my bad split.  I was just hanging there, upside down, thinking, "Well, shit…".  Then I got down and started working on my opposite invert.

I have a couple of pairs of volley ball shorts that I use for pole. They work great. I got them at Dick’s and they come in a ton colors/patterns. I got purple leopard and purple/blue swirly. Another pole buddy got a blue giraffe print. Super fun!

Hey, I’m new here, and what thread do I post to first? Just goes to show, even when your depression and anxiety is under control, it’s never forgotten. I’ll try to keep it short, because everyone has already given wonderful advice. First off, thank you for being brave enough to ask for help and to reveal a part of yourself that most of like to keep hidden. I firmly believe that the stigma of mental illness will never go away until we can all stop being ashamed of who we are. The worst part for anxiety sufferers is that trying to keep it hidden causes more anxiety. You’re so afraid of being seen as "crazy". In that vein, try opening up to your boyfriend. Chances are, he’ll just want to help. Just make sure to let him know what the best way to help is. If you have at least one person you don’t feel you have to hide from, it can make a world of difference. And of course, keep dancing. It’s good for the soul.
