I don’t really do anything differently. I still wear the same length shorts and exercise as per usual (being more aware of tiring myself out or muscular strain as well as stretching). As far as equipment, I use pads, though I’ve been looking into getting a menstrual cup, so it’s cool to see that other people use them too!

No? I started out on 45mm for the most part but I’ve been using exclusively 50mm as of late (last month and a half or so). I think perhaps using a bigger pole has made my grip stronger (by necessity) but I wouldn’t say that it’s done anything with my progress. Since I still have the option to use 45mm, I like to try it on both, so, if anything, I feel like I’m progressing faster than I would be on just the smaller size or the bigger size pole because I can see what actually works, not just what works that day on that pole, y’know?
Don’t know if that really answers your question, but I think you’ll be fine.

I tend to bounce between 50mm and 45. My studio has 1 lonely 50mm brass, a 50mm chrome and the rest are 45mm chrome. I use all of them on different days (people who show up late tend to get stuck with the 50s) and for me it really just depends on what I’m doing. I’ve been showing the 50mm brass a lot of love lately just because I stick to it better than chrome and I feel like the 50mm keeps my grip strength strong, but I always make sure to try new tricks on the 45mm as well to see the differences (some moves pinch me a lot more or on chrome than on a 50mm and/or brass — yay, experiments).

Wait, I’m confused. Wasn’t Cherished the one posting about one-handed spins, not Melissa?

No problem, Melissa, I hope it helps. Best of luck and keep having fun! 🙂

Hey Melissa,
I just started poling in January as well, but I haven’t had the problem letting go so much here as I did back when I polevaulted. It can be scary learning to trust your body but you know what you’re doing. You’re at a studio where people who want the best for you are there to make sure you are ok, and really, the floor isn’t so far (pre-climb, that is). It’s ok if it’s not pretty and it’s ok if you mess up. Just keep at it! The body is a self organizing entity. As long as you tell it what to do and practice, it’ll know even when you feel the need to think it through.
When I was polevaulting and would feel stuck and hesitate my coach would have me just do several test runs to go through the motions — nothing pretty, not trying to get any height, intentionally flopping onto the mat, just to remind the body of where we were going and to quiet the mind a bit. Maybe this sort of thing would help? Doing a bunch of front hooks or firemen in a row and focusing on what the body is doing, not necessarily making the body do any particular thing. Observing, you know? Maybe this will help to hesitate less because you are present in the moment and not outside of it second guessing it?
I don’t know. I hope that makes any sense. Best of luck!

I’m in Cincinnati. Yea, I saw all of those when I was looking. It’s so hard to get a good vibe on places through web pages, though. I’m sure they’re all wonderful studios, but I want one that’s a good fit for me, so it’d be nice to know what other people thought about them. I mean, if all else fails, I can just practice by myself, but community is really important to me and I’d feel like I’d end up quitting if I couldn’t pole other people at least now and then.
