Right now I'm using the salve sold at my aerial school. I'm loving it! The other girls in my aerial school seem to like it a lot as well, and some girls from the neighboring pole studio and skateboarders have been buying it too coz of word of mouth. It's called "Black and Blue" by DVK Hawaii (https://www.facebook.com/dvkhawaii), made by another aerial student who understands exactly how badly bruised we get. I guess you can write her if you'd like to buy… she runs a small business, not like you can get it on Amazon https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif The ingredients are: organic calendula flowers, fresh wildharvested St. John's wort flowers, organic arnica flowers, organic olive oil, beeswax, organic lavender essential oil and vitamin E oil. Seems to heal my bruises nicely. I've been putting it on my scars as well, seems to soften and fade them. It's more of a balm, not a gel/cream/stick. Not oily. And I think it smells so good, now I have to put some on before I sleep even if I don't have bruises because the smell helps me relax lol. I think it must be the lavender in it… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gifThe smaller 1oz jar is around $7 I think, forgot how much the bigger one was. A little goes a long way though… I've only used like half of my small jar since buying it 2 months ago and I use it around 2-3 times a day for around 4-5 days in a row because by then the bruises would be gone. Then I go and bruise that part all over again haha!
I used to use the Whole Foods brand arnica gel, which healed my bruises nicely too. But it smells funny, is sticky, and whenever I'd get pole/silk burn over my bruises, it would really sting. It isn't bad but I'm favoring this new balm over it. My tube is 2.6 oz and cost around $10. It's runny, so it got used up fast.

I'm a doctor. I work in a community health center in a rough neighborhood where I live and am associate faculty at the med school as well. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I agree with Elektra. Get one your size, for safety more than anything. I've always felt like I'd fall through the bigger ones not my size.

How do you put garlic up in there? Do you just stick a clove in? Or do you need to crush it up first? Sorry if I'm too graphic, I'm just really curious about this as it's the first time I've heard it! Honestly I wouldn't want to smell like garlic down there… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

My advice would be to choose who you tell. Ideally, I would love to tell everyone about it too, and open up discussions with skeptical people regarding the art of beauty of pole. There are still a lot of biases in the real world though, and you don't want their closed-mindedness to bite you in the butt. You can feel a person out sometimes by bringing up the subject of pole without directly saying that you do it. While most people have been extremely supportive of me, I've had some bad reactions professionally when a friend from work told a whole bunch of people who started to see me differently, and it affected my work relationships with them.

Haha Jelli that's exactly what happened to us the first few times! Oh another "bad habit" we were doing was to watch amazing pole clips on Youtube together to the point that we forgot to pole ourselves! So now we have a private FB group together, and if we find moves on the internet that we would like to try, we post them on there so the other girls can help brainstorm on how to break it down. It makes figuring out the move easier when we see each other and it saves time as everyone has seen the Youtube already before we start.
P.S. Emotioncatcher, sometimes we watch your Youtubes, and we love them. Thanks much! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gif

I pole once a week with 5 other girls, we have 1-2 poles and we're all upper intermediate who don't take lessons and we just try to teach ourselves. We're new to pole jamming too (it's been a month or two now) so maybe I don't have the best advice yet, but so far, here are some helpful things I thought I'd share from our limited experience…
So far it has helped us to have a structured plan for the 2 hours we have together. We roughly schedule in advance how we want to divide time doing warm up, conditioning, drills, working on certain moves and try to stick with it. One person is in charge of moving things along to keep everyone focused. No hard feelings if you get yelled at for slacking off https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif This way you get to accomplish everything you want. One person in charge of the music. Each girl must come prepared and must have picked a few moves she wants to work on, so that it will be easy to trade moves with each other, and it will minimize just sitting around staring at each other. One of us also has an iPad and we video ourselves so we can see where we go wrong and what we need to improve on.
Water is good, yes! For snacks, we've been staying away from too much carbs or anything too heavy because that gets us lazy and sleepy later on. We have carrot sticks, hummus with thin whole wheat crackers, light cheese, mini turkey wraps, salad, strawberries… Cupcakes and ice cream have now been banned! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Anyway, hope that helps. I wish you ladies a very fun and successful pole jam and I'm looking forward to seeing other people's tips for pole jams as well https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I have several Samoan, Tongan and Native Hawaiian patients who tattoo themselves heavily at home starting adolescence and I think it's beautiful and I believe it is an art form. As a doctor who cares for patients who tattoo often, I have seen maybe more than my share of infected tattoos, hypersensitivities and allergies. The only time I am ever against it is when people recycle needles that have been previously used on someone else, for obvious reasons.
To the OP and everyone else who gets tattoos, I would just like to say that it is unusual for a doctor to be against tattooing in general. Even if your doctor had a personal bias against it, it should not matter if they are professional. I am not sure where EvaRut got the idea that a doctor might prescribe treatment that would ruin a tattoo, but I hope it does not dissuade you from seeking medical help. Honestly, I can't think of a single medication or treatment that would ruin a tattoo. In fact, I can only think of a tattoo getting ruined from scarring from not seeking medical help in time. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

I mostly get my pole outfits from Lululemon. It's pricy but very sturdy, comfy, and most of all they hold my "food baby" in and keep my private parts private https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif. I have 2 pole shorts that I bought in 2009 and they still look new. And the bras have kept my D-cup girls from popping out so far.
Bought some Mika after the rave reviews here. Honestly, I was sorely disappointed! My Mika shorts are just ok… I think you need to have a really flat stomach for them. The waistband isn't very reinforced so it tends to roll under and expose my food baby. They're functional otherwise. After 2 uses of the matching bra though, the elastic inside the fabric separated from the side seam. My left boob now likes to perform the "underboob" below the band so it's pretty much useless now. I guess I could rip out the seam and repair it by hand coz it is quite pretty, but for the cost and the reviews, I expected better performance from the garment. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif

When I was learning it, I just used my doorway. I put my legs on either side of the doorway then I used my elbows to crawl through bit by bit like some Japanese horror movie monster. I looked kind of creepy but it was effective and free https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Are certain colors more puffy than others? Some people have allergies to certain chemical pigments. But yes, have you doctor take a look to see if it's an infection vs. an allergy.

Do you have friends you can pole with? My pole friends keep me motivated, and I've befriended a few online who truly inspire me 🙂
