Oh and I've been to other amazing studios as well since starting pole again – the difference between one I went to and the ones in NC I've visited is insane. We actually drive 3-4 hours just to go to them every couple months.

I also suggest a mat in the future when you reach inverted moves! We did them for awhile without a mat, but its come in handy now that its there! 🙂

I started in January 2009. At the studio I used to go to, I reached the advanced level in 8 months (inverted moves). I got my own pole 2 months after starting lessons, so I would see something and try it myself at home (My first inversion was the day I got it lol). I am not flexible at ALL. Never gained any flexibility at that studio either after a year of attendance. Stopped going in Feb 2010 and pretty much died off on pole til July 2010 when I took a workshop with Karol and visited a truly amazing studio (StudioX Pole Fitness) I learned what a true studio SHOULD be like and got the fire ignited with pole again. Now I've been teaching myself with a friend using YouTube, privates with Karol, and pole jams, and we've made so much progress since September 2010 (when we started self-teaching).

I've never had a problem with strength really. I have plenty of strength, no flexyness. I dont really workout besides pole when my friend and I get together, though I'm trying to change that. My current schedule is brutal – working full time and then full college course load which results in me getting home late and being tired all the time. My friend and I try and get together Fridays and starting Saturdays this week. When we do, we workout for hours. We'll do pole stuff for 4+ hours sometimes. We feel it in the morning, but we've also seen progression!

Everyone is different. My friend and I keep each other challenged – there are things she can do that I cant, and vice versa, and it keeps us going – practicing til we get it! It's all about having your own pace and doing things as they come comfortably. There's no specific time frame 🙂

After watching some of the amateur competition entries, I became negative towards my idea of entering for 2012 … there is NO way I'm remotely close to those women! But like mentioned before, the only reason they're amateur is because they've yet to place to gain pro.

I've had that same issue. Cant figure out what is so hard about it if I have a great butterfly, extended butterfly, and split grip jack knife …. but the aysha and straight edge elude me. They're strong as an elbow grip, but that split grip has been evading me on those tricks. I can do a great straight edge from a cartwheel a well.

Kobajo – next time I'm practicing I am going to try your technique.

After spending 2 months trying to nail the regular cartwheel mount, I moved onto the TG with instruction from Karol. (took a private with her in NC). It really wasn't as hard as we thought (pretty much got it within 2 weeks – my friend had a straddle and straight edge, I started witha  tuck form of sorts because straddling throws off my balance. Just like with the cartwheel, I stay straight up instead of straddle or jack knife initially). I've started practicing the TG from an inversion, and have found it much easier to hold myself that way right now. Guess I just have the arm/shoulder muscles but not enough abs to follow through from the floor. I never thought I would get it because it felt so awkward at first – though now it feels natural and I'm tempted to put myself in that grip when playing on the pole, but we were also told by Karol that not everyone WILL be able to master the TG – not everyone is made the same. TG mastery is my by-spring goal, TG iron-x by fall.

If it hurts a lot, you probably aren't meant to be able to do it! No point in injuring yourself and possibly ruining your ability to do other grips.

I tried to find a pole to do a trick on in every state we stopped in going from South Carolina to California and back, but it didnt always work out haha. I need to go out one day with  a friend and hit up some poles at a playground, park, and street signs downtown!! Got a couple saved on photobucket so I'll post those 2

To have the splits by the end of the year (currently a good foot or more off the ground 🙁 ) Looking into which flexibility dvds to get (torn between bespun and valentino)

Perfect the twisted grip and iron x

Workout more often  (at least 30 mins of walking on the treadmill a day when I'm not on the pole)

Eat a bit healthier (got whole grain goldfish the other day instead of regular, hey its progress haha) and strength train more

Make more pole videos and work more on spinner mode.

Many of the pole goals are to help me prepare for entering USPDF in 2012 (even though after watching this years' amateur submissions, I dont think it'll matter much!!)

I'm guilty of jumping (kicking) into inverts from time to time, pretty much just being quick/lazy about it because I'm trying to do something else instead. But the instructors at the pole studio I went to have also often jumped into inverts and called them "kick ups" involving a leg kick instead of a lift, which is where we probably picked up the habit when we actually took classes there before taking it upon ourselves to learn on our own.

But I also dont kick and grab however I can, I have the control to grab properly. One former student, who was supposedly in the highest advanced level, couldn't invert worth a crap, and would grab with "monkey toes" after flinging up as hard as possible to try and get on the pole. Yet the rest of us who could invert properly were told we weren't skilled enough for that level. Is it a wonder why I no longer attend….

Loved both those videos. Especially loved the elbow grip to true grip switch!!!

I'm starting to rethink my 2012 submission goal LOL I cannot compare!

Oooh, thanks for the link Holly. I want the splits so bad (I'm probably more than a foot off the ground, ugh), but I also hate stretching because I am SO inflexible so any stretches I do dont even look like stretches. I've never been flexible for as long as I can remember. But this year one of my goals is to get the splits or somewhat close, and follow up with a 2012 USPDF entry.

Glad to hear you have your pole up 🙂 And that's totally awesome your mom made space for your pole. Mine wont even go near that room when she visits my house!

I bought a chrome 2" PS permanant pole and have had it almost 2 years. I loveee it, though I do want a chrome 45mm Xpole Xpert (want to spin….2 years ago I didnt haha. And also try out the smaller diameter).  I hated the brass poles at the studio I used to go to (grip was hit or miss, usually miss), and hated the look of them being tarnished too. But I've heard of people having great grip success. I get amazing grip on my friend's chrome Xpole after a few minutes of warming up when we practice at her house. I think it all depends on the person.

I've actually used Windex as grip when my pole was being a pain and I didnt have any other grip available. Worked long enough for me to get the pole warmed up enough to stick. (But use alcohol to clean it).  I love the blowdryer idea lol!

I am soooo envious of all of you who can do the splits!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Or are even remotely close. I’m so far away its disheartening. Even after a year of stretching for pole, I didn’t get any closer. I think I need to try some different methods.
