I’m glad the situation was not as serious as you thought!

Fleur gave you solid advice, I think…take your time and do your research so that you arrive at the doctor with a good background of information. I am open minded about SOME of the alternative treatments. I have known situations in which accupuncture has helped with pain. And I think seeing a nutrtionist is neither east nor west…just a good part of a sensible strategy for staying healthy.

I won’t really take a position on the traditional versus modern medicine debate…though I’m personally very much science oriented (married to a biologist who has done dissections!), I think everyone has to make this very personal decision based upon an informed analysis of their own situation. But, in all fairness, I think scientific medicine has a lot to offer.

One of the problems, I think, is that western medicine has lost much of the "tender loving care" aspect of treating the patient. I think if we could somehow get that back, we’d have less of an argument about traditional versus western medicine..and doctors could spend more time taking care of the "whole" patient…

Well, best of luck to you…. hope you will make a full recovery. Now…get back on that pole and practice, LOL!

Laurie and I have a few home made dance hoops we made from 160 PSI tubing and hose connectors. We tricked them out with colored duct tape from Michael’s craft store. I have one or two hooping vids up on my channel. I am really terrible…can just make the hoop go round, that’s about it. But it is loads of fun.

I wish my wife would consent to posting a video..she’s actually pretty decent at the hoop…and can even turn around and walk while hooping. But that whole high school teacher thing has her nervous about ever being in a video!

"Hoopgirl" has a great website and a female fitness and empowerement message similar to much of the poling movement. She is into nutrition and vegetarianism. She was part of a video project that never got released…but clips of the movie, HOOPWORLD, float around on the net. SHe has an outrageously sexy video of herself hooping over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Fran..or Oakland…and gives lessons at a place called something like the Dance Junction…or something…on Divisadero Street in Oakland, I think….

Veena and/or Fleur…I would be surprised if you ladies had not encountered her at one point or another because she is quite a fixture on the Dance Exhibition and street festival circuit inthe Bay Area. I think her website is just simply HOOPGIRL.com. Her real name is Christabel.

I REALLY want to see a hoop video with the TRIPLE THREAT: CHARLEY, QULIA, and JENNIFER.

Come ON, ladies…that would be something to see!

    Name : Joel Lessing
    Age: 48 (12-4-60)
    Location: Forest Park, Illinois
Stage Name: I don’t really have one…but I always use the username POLEDANCEFAN across forums to be consistent. I decided to stop being anonymous about the poling a few months ago and posted my real name on my You-Tube channel for anyone who wanted to do Facebook. Joel is my real name. I did this when I found out Allie got fired for being a pole dancer by her employer because a co-worker ratted her out to her boss and the boss thought pole dancing wasn’t the "right" image for the company. What a load of sexist bull****! Even nowadays, plenty of men working at Fortune 500 companies schedule parties at dance clubs. So it’s ok to GO to a strip club…but you can’t pole dance in your living room and WORK here? I’ve noticed there are lots of dance clubs around Charlotte NC….and the headquarters of many banks and insurance companies–is that a coincidence?
Lessons: Help from fellow You-Tubers, Jamilla’s DVD, Studio Veena Forum and PJ’s.
    Static!
Shoes: I always pole in NIKE runners or NIKE leather Golf shoes. Nice and grippy shoe leather, LOL!
Favorite Move: The airwalk, the split grip aerial body wave, and the Eros (or "Flight Attendant" –as it is known in the Pacific Region). Lately I am a fan of the TG lift…I am really enjoying watching everyone trying to master this move.
Day Job: Basically, I am a nursing home inspector…but with a wider range of duties involving auditing Long Term Care and Geriatric Care settings.
Best Feature: Aww…no way! I am too shy and embarrassed to talk about my own physical features, LOL! I can’t even stand to watch my own videos after I post them..honestly, they are mortifying to me!
How I got into Pole: I fell in love with the videos on You-Tube and I felt stupid always making comments and critiques and having no "street cred" on the pole. So I built my own pole and started trying to learn.
Studio Veena: Veena actually sent me a PM and invited me to join. I was very scared and nervous about joining a forum of mostly all women. She broke the ice for me and I am very grateful to her for this! Thank You, Veena!

Definitely worth buying the whole set, I think. The Aussie conversion rate was VERY favorable when I got mine…and since you pay the same shipping more or less no matter how many DVD’s you buy…may as well get all five.

Most of my "formal" instruction on pole moves has come from her DVD’s. I do her stretch workout 3x a week. I actually rescued an old, dead television from the attic and set up a DVD player in the pole room. It works well enough that I can see her lessons right in the pole room!

Her DVD’s are worth every penny, I think!

I love the Flips…we have 3 of them inthe house…all the old Ultra models…not HD.

But I’ve heard the HD Mino is a good cam.

The older Ultras save in Windows format, so they are easy to use with PC’s bought over the counter with Windows Movie Maker.

Had just one problem with a FLIP–a sticky button. I mailed it to the company, they mailed a new one back. No Problem.

FLIPS have like 3 buttons. Stop, Go, and Record..basically…and they fit in a Universal Mount. I have dropped one off my bike onto a concrete bike bath at 20 miles per hour. The camera cracked slightly. I taped the case with Scotch tape…it works PERFECTLY. If you use Windex or Grip Product, the FLIP is very forgiving of pine tar, grime, and sweaty hands.

And if you DO manage to break it…it’s relatively cheap. KMART has the old ULTRAS on clearance for 75$ now. Mostly only the HOT ORANGE or LIME GREEN are left. But hey, it’s just for the pole room!

I honestly can say that I don’t have too many pet peeves when it comes to other people’s videos. I mean, I think we should all recognize that people have all sorts of different reasons for getting into pole–and that many different factors may affect levels of performance.

There are casual polers for whom poling is like a social sport–a time and place to get together with other people and get a decent workout. One subset of this group are the You-Tube polers (like myself) who don’t really have any studio access. And then there are serious amateur pole athletes. There is also a professional subset of erotic dancers interested in perfecting their skills for work and as a way to improve their income (nothing wrong with that!). And finally, there are competitive polers.

Some people don’t have time…or a decent space…or a decent camera to make a video that looks nice, or they don’t have or can’t figure out how to use editing software. Even so, they want to participate and make the effort and I think it’s important to be as supportive as possible. I HAVE seen some pretty wild videos where it’s been hard not to cringe…young ladies taking a running start and HURLING themselves at a Carmen Electra on Springs, wedding rings scraping the ENTIRE distance from ceiling to floor, LOL! But you can often see the fire and the desire in their eyes…so I think we just have to search hard for one good thing in those videos and point it out…then pray they sign up for Studio Veena!

I hope I don’t come off as being too critical of the thread…I just think that maybe we need to acknowledge that many ladies are basically poling for fun and their videos are just a way of being part of the conversation and having a social exchange with other polers.

LOL–on a much lighter note, I think I have committed just about EVERY peeve listed in this thread…including stealing somebody’s song!

I have this EXTREMELY annoying tic of pulling the right shoulder strap on my sleeveless T-shirts. It shows up in all my videos–I hate it…and I often chop up clips to edit this habit out!

Yeah, I agree with Veena. Also…if she is not so savvy about poles and moves…there might be issues with insurance and accreditation. I’d be real careful and cautious about the situation. I mean…really…DIAMETER is the most basic pole issue of all…as there is so much variability in hand span and such…

You may be a MALE pole dancer if

…you can’t quite convince your wife or girlfriend that you are rewinding that video with the girl in the bikini over and over because you are trying to figure out if the thumb inthe sub hand grip is pointing UP or DOWN

…you have an extensive collection of medium sized Soffe cheerleader shorts…but are NOT a cross dresser!

…you are constantly drawing pole engineering diagrams on napkins at dinner.

…you’ve tipped an exotic dancer in a strip club the same amount of money as a lap dance because you realized you just wasted 15 minutes of her dance time talking pole moves and you feel guilty because you know the manager is staring at her, wondering why she hasn’t sold the dance yet, and you are afraid she’ll get in trouble.

…you have one or two friends you know just COULDN’t handle the pole thing…so you just never bring it up.

…you know a female friend who you KNOW is athletic and fit and really want to say to her…"you know, you really ought to take up pole dancing"…but you wouldn’t DARE..because it would look and sound like a pick-up line, make you look like a perv…and, possibly, get you slapped!

June 21, 2009 at 6:23 pm in reply to: Amateur Night post event recap!!!

With Glitter’s permission,I write about last week’s amateur night…and my FIRST VISIT to a strip club. Yes, I have lost my strip club virginity!

Glitter sent me a PM about 2 weeks ago inviting me to come to the south suburban club where she danced a few weeks ago in the amateur competition. I wrote back that it was a possibility–that I had never seen a pole dance live, and had been thinking about going to a club. I’d brought the topic up with my wife-several times–if only half seriously. I told Glitter I would have to talk it over with Laurie and I would get back to her. I printed up Glitter’s e-mail, showed it to Laurie, and said I really wanted to go. Since I was really scared about the whole thing, this would be the beast way to do it, because at least I would know somebody there. To my surprise, Laurie agreed to it–not enthusiastically…but didn’t object. She even held out the possibility she might go with me!

Glitter texted me at about 10PM that night, confirming everything was going as planned. I left, arrived at about 10:30. I brought $120 in cash, knowing Chicago’s sad federal history in the 1970’s of strip club credit card fraud I was afraid to use credit–but I guess this is NOT a problem nowadays. RIght off the bat, the attendant wanted 10 bucks to park the car inthe "Valet" section…the parking lot on their property, LOL! There was a $10 cover…about the same as my music club, which charges $8 on weeknights. I came overdressed, wearing Khakis and a polo shirt–but some guys were wearing jeans and t-shirts…and even a few with shorts! I think the maitre d’ (lol! is that what they call the doorman with the walkie talkie in his ear?) sized me up because of that…he said, Hold on, sir, I’ve got JUST the girl for you!" So a young lady in a black cocktail dress, with the top open materialised in about 30 seconds.

I did get a chance to meet Glitter early inthe night…a quick hug and a hello…but she said they were not allowed to talk to customers, so I quickly withdrew and took my seat…

She offered a private dance–there were all kinds of cost structures, but basically $20 for a dance topless, 30 nude, and a bewildering array of combos and specials–hard to understand because the music was loud!. I explained that I was here to support a friend in the contest.

The club has an oval stage, narrow in the middle like a figure 8–with two Brass poles. The regular dancers varied in their pole skills, but there were two sisters that were exceptional, doing shoulder mounts, inverts, and split heels. I tipped the floor $5 after every one of the floor acts if they did any pole work at all. A number of the dancers then came up to me afterwards and sat at my table (I was down front, by the stage). I talked to a lady named Gia for a long time and explained to her that I poled also. She didn’t believe it at first, but when I started talking about her split heel move, she saw I was serious. She had watched many You-Tube videos. She asked if I knew Jamilla (!). Then she told me there was this lady–the "Boo Boo girl"–who did the "triangle trick". I said, you mean BERTYSBOOBOO? She said, "yeah!, that’s her–she’s awesome…the Boo Boo girl. I’m gonna do that trick…it’s awesome!" She told me that all of the dancers had watched that video on a laptop one day in the dressing room! They all knew about Studio Veena and Polejunkies, too!

After a while, quite a few of the stage dancers came up and talked to me…whenever I tipped the stage…

In general, the club was very busy…there is so much going on..announcements, music, dancers walking by…it was a little hard for me to keep track of everything. Definitely it was "Sensory Overload."

Finally, the amateur contest started. There was a large number of dancers–20-30, so they paraded them onto the stage in small groups. It really didn’t give them a chance to show off their skills at all. I will say that Glitter was MAGNIFICENT! She got right on the pole and was clearly the MOST skilled poler in her group. The "mass" presentation really cheated all the girls out of their chance to shine..it was over in like 2 minutes and I didn’t even realized she had been eliminated. REALLY UNFAIR to her, I thought. But you guys would have been proud of her…she was FANTASTIC, CONFIDENT, not a bit nervous!

Glitter came around to say "hi" and introduced me to her friends, a couple that had come with her. (By the way, there were couples in the club, including what looked like a group that had just finished softball–they were in their uniforms..). They had to leave in a hurry…(work tomorrow!)

So I had one final dilemma–I was pretty sure I might never go to a club again…this episode was kind of pushing it already with my wife. S-o-o-o- YES, I decided to get a lap dance… That turned out to be more than a notion–they had all given up on me earlier in the evening. So I just went up to earphone guy and I said, "OK, I changed my mind…can I get a dance?" Withina few minutes, a young lady showed up.

The dances are given in a large room with an immense built -in leather couch that winds all the way around the room– off to the side of the main club room. Uh…I thought nude meant topless..but nude meant…well, "nude" She sat in my lap at first and said her name was (******), a common Ukranian name. It is the EXACT name of my coworker…and then I got the giggles. I think she thought I was insane, so I explained why I was laughing. She said, is her last name (*****)?, which means "white" in Slavic root languages. It’s like "Mary Smith." She goes, "oh yes, that is my name, too–very common in Poland and Ukraine…can we start the dance now?"

Well, that young lady was VERY BENDY…and well, perhaps it was a tad too much anatomy…but I’m glad I had the experience. Rest assured, my hands NEVER left the couch! She stopped at exactly the moment the song was over and said, "We continue?" I said, "No, that was pretty cool, but I had to get home!" I didn’t have any change and I was embarrassed to ask, so I gave her two of the last three twenties I had (a ten dollar tip) She said the economy was TERRIBLE and nobody ever tipped anymore. We said polite good byes, shook hands and I headed out.

I headed for the parking lot with $21 left, tipped the Valet $1 for driving my car 6 feet to the door. On the way home, I filled the tank and arrived home with $0, LOL!

Laurie was still up when I got home. I gave her a detailed narrative of the entire experience…lap dance included… She looked a little irritated…but not mad. She said, "OK, well that was your Father’s day present." Then she hit the remote and we finished watching that "Therapy" show that’s on HBO, LOL!

My feelings about the experience? I had a GREAT time. I was NERVOUS AS HELL, but finally got to see some live pole. Meeting Glitter was a high point. Let me tell you that You-Tube does not do this GORGEOUS young lady justice. She is very petite, and has the deepest, darkest, soul revealing eyes…and the face of a top model. She has an amazing personality..lively, vivacious..and sweet.

So "Thank You!" Glitter! It was an experience of a lifetime!

Veena,I skimmed through this series of posts…as I was somewhat familiar with your situation from earlier.

To me, the most upsetting aspect of this situation is the lack of professionalism from the doctor and his refusal to take you seriously..or even listen long enough to make a diagnosis..or determine that the matter was out of his area of specialty.

    I hoping things will improve…

Likewise, Fleur…I hope your shoulder situation improves also. I was encouraged by your experience with the doctor because…and I hate to say this…but I had a sneaking suspicion that gender and the nature of the injury were contributing to the brush off that Veena was getting. I hate to "see" sexism everywhere..but sometimes you do kind of wonder about stuff like that!

When my knee was screwed up a fe years back…I saw the sports guy by chance…his day on duty. He got the bike riding thing right away and gave me all these handouts on icing, heating, stetching, etc… took the time to listen to what I was saying…
