I took Derick’s class when I was in Pompano Beach in April and it was excellent. I am going to be down later this month and super bummed that I don’t think I will have time to sneak a class in. I highly recommend checking his class out.

Grayeyes – if your current PT is unable to have a quality discussion with you about the demands you place on your body through pole and then provide appropriate treatment, I would find a new PT. As an OT, I am not allowed to judge and I need to treat all people equally to allow them to return to their best potential quality of life. While I realize I am an OT and not a PT so I am all about people being as independent as possible with all activities they choose to partake in, I still firmly believe everyone has the right to get as healthy and strong as they can. Him being uncomfortable about you poling is unprofessional and unethical. In my mind, it is basically the same as him being uncomfortable treating someone with tattoos.
Saphyre – I have definitely heard of people bringing their poles with them to chiros and PTs/OTs before. Try to re-enact some of the push pole movements against a wall with the therapist so they can feel how your muscles are engaging to most accurately identify the muscles which are engaging and those that are not. You may also want to have the muscles checked for knots as sometimes as knot can be pushing down on a nerve and impacting your shoulder.
Both of you need to get healthy!!!

Who applied your kinesiotex tape? I am presuming it was a PT or OT. You should definitely speak to the applying therapist about pole and when they think your shoulder is rehabbed sufficiently to get onto the pole. Kinesiotex tape is a great therapeutic agent but it won’t solve the actual problem. If possible, you may want to bring a pole into therapy with you so they have a better understanding of the stresses and angles you are placing on the injury.

Owen. David does an amazing job of breaking each aspect down, modifying his content for you if needed, and making certain that you are hitting all aspects of what he is teaching correctly. He has an outstanding knowledge of anatomy which helps his teaching, as well. Basically, if David offers it, I try my best to be there!
I also had a good experience with Estee Zakar as she did a great job of modifying her content to the level of the students. I also remember feeling safe with her spotting. I have had a few workshops where I feel I did not get as much out of them, either due to a teaching style or my own lack of follow through (definitely my fault). This has really led me to think hard about if it is worth it to me as the financial cost of workshops can be high.

X-Pole was really great when that happened to my pole. In my case it was the X- joint that had rusted out. Good luck!!

Somewhat off topic, but I have to ask. When I saw Wicked, I didn’t recall there being pole in it. Has this changed? Musicals are my first love and I love it when my different interests overlap.

You may also want to take a look at Chic Physique Dance in Bethesda. It is only about 20 mins from Arlington without traffic and 30-35 with traffic. I’m not sure the June schedule is up yet, but give Tina a call and she will be able to help you out. Normally there are advanced classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays.

I had the same thing occur and discovered it was due to both improper form and my abs not being strong enough. I am much more successful since I backed away from it for awhile and working on increasing my core strength even more.

I just throught this comment was hilarious!!! My first thought this morning was: Woohoo I won my fantasy football game and my bruises make me look like it too! Somehow the comment that poletrickster shared and my thought from this morning just don't add up!

Chumpchkin beat me to it but yes, Eliana Girard does know what she is doing on pole. Tiffany does not do pole which is why the only thing she did was the beginning of an inverted V and I am sure that was tremendously difficult for her. Eliana has studied pole as well as lyra and is actually quite beautiful. From my searching, it appears she has taken all of her videos off of youtube recently. This is the only one I was able to find when I went looking a few weeks ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stosyuLXN6cI know many people here have their pole crushes, but as a dancer since I was 8 who now does pole, she is my dance crush!

Please please please do not self medicate with kinesiotex tape. Please go to a qualified medical practioner such as a physical therapist, occupational therapist, DO, or other qualified practioner to accurately determine what the issue is and determine if the tape is appropriate for your use. Medical practicioners spend a lot of money and time on appropriate training for how to use such modalities. A video online is not going to help you truly figure out how much stretch to put into the tape or whether to tape from origin to insertion or the reverse. It will not teach you where a muscle's origin or insertion is. I have frequently recommended to clients to combine therapeutic modalities as research shows that an appropriate combination is significantly more effective than one in isolation. The athletes you saw in the Olympics are under the care of qualified people who have been trained in kinesiotex tape application.
To be honest, it sounds like you may have shin splints which can lead to fractures in your tibia. While I am not there to assess you in person, I would highly recommend that you get checked by a doctor and possibly see a therapist for rehab to make certain you don't injure yourself further.
I totally apologize for hopping on my soap box and I will now step off.

MemberAugust 25, 2012 at 10:12 pm in reply to: Telling my Adult Kids that I am Learning PoleMy family all know that I pole and out of everyone, my dad is the most supportive!! My mom has been more accepting recently as the girls at my studio have been super supportive to me through a really tough period in my life. Truthfully, my brothers have the most difficulty with it. Its not that they have an "issue" with my taking pole as they know it doesn't go anywhere but the studio and my own home. I have spoken with my dad about it and he feels that it is more they don't want to imagine their sister on the pole for two reasons. The first being that they are protective (annoyingly so at times) and are concerned about other people's reactions. The second (which I think is more true) is that their sister on the pole "ruins" going to strip clubs and seeing strippers for them (they both still have plenty of bachelor parties to attend). I have pictures of me doing tricks and I show my family. My parents look at them easily, my brothers quickly look and then turn away, even though in them I am wearing more than the beach volleyball players. So, I would be prepared for him to be a bit unsettled by it and for him to need some time to accept it. But, he will because he loves you and he wants to support you. Just be prepared that he may not want to talk about it as after all, he will just end up picturing you on the pole the next time he goes to a strip club and I am pretty sure that is not something either of you want!!
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
