Can someone please tell me if there is some sort of difference made by the SHAPE of the platform, namely along the front? I’m looking at two different but similar shoes and trying to decide which ones I want… just noticed that one is sort of u-curved while the other is more of a diagonal inward towards the heel – and it made me curious.
ALSO as a note please let me know if you have tried either of these and if there are any notes. It seems like there is a difference in the shape of the heel also, plus I feel like the “moon” pleasers look shinier than the “sky” style.

Every man will be different, just as every woman is. Many are going to find strength moves easier to tackle than friction holds or flexibility moves, but there are also many men who will need to work on their strength before they can do the tricky stuff.

For a good example though, this is how things went when my husband decided to take on pole… bearing in mind, he was in the gym several days a week before starting. He started maybe 5 months ago.

When Hubby first started learning I would take him through a lot of the basic spins and basic pole holds that my beginner pole ladies learned and he got a good foundation. I skipped some of the more “feminine” moves/transitions like hip circle/body waves and such, but we did the majority of the moves. We would briefly touch things like a pole sit or crucifix but it took him a lot longer to get those and he is still working on things of that nature now (he’s still not showing enough skin to properly pole sit but getting to that comfort level is something I know will take time, especially for him). He took very quickly to inversion work, some of the more difficult spins, and climbs (he can even no leg climb). He is working on leg hangs and jasmine and the like, they are difficult and challenging for him, but not so much that he gets frustrated, so long as they are mixed with the tricks that are more core/arm strength related. He is also very good at inversions, aerial invert, shouldermount, he has even done a handspring a time or two.

What I hear most from him as a frustrating thing about male pole dancing is that he feels that there is little inspiration for him when he looks up videos of men, because many that he finds are, as he feels, either showboating crazy tricks he can’t fathom doing, or they are dancing with tricks in a more “feminine” way that he can’t connect with. For a guy with no dance background trying to learn how to move around the pole without just hitting tricks, it can be frustrating.

I’m curious if anyone has something to say on the other side of the coin? How would you feel if an instructor from another local studio came to learn at yours?

I have been really wanting to take my aerial training (lyra and silks) to the next level but there’s only one other aerial instructor at my studio, and I feel like I need to get out and explore a bit. Unfortunately I don’t feel like I can afford to go way out of town all the time to get the instruction I desire, but there’s another studio locally that teaches and one of the girls used to teach at my studio. I’m afraid to say “HEY, I started teaching here after you left, but I want to also learn from you!”

I actually believe that my posture has an affect on how "flat" my stomach looks too. If your back is arching too much it may cause your toned tummy to look like its poking out… just putting that out there.

But other than that, I refer back to what has been said so far =P

How awesome is this, I literally just finished practicing my headstand tonight with some serious progress! I actually took a MELT class while out of town yesterday and the teacher showed me some tips before class for my handstand/elbow stand. Apparently I am not stacking as well as I thought, mainly because I tend to arch my back a little bit and it sends me over. Also found that I still need work in pushing through my shoulders, but I did discover that it is easier to do a headstand when I have a little more support of my head by cupping my hands around the top of my head. I'm posting a video soon!

I noticed a huge difference in my pole strength when I started going to the gym and training my arms and core (trained legs too but didn't notice it as much on the pole). I would do maybe a day of back/bicep, a day of chest/tricep, a day of shoulder/abs, and a day of legs.

I think "outsiders" may sometimes have a hard time understanding how difficult it is to do certain things we do in the pole world. Some are more blunt about it than others when they see something they are not drawn into. Keep in mind that you are learning, every step you take is better than none at all, and maybe try to understand WHY he felt that way so maybe you can take something away from the comment to work on. Explore his answer a little more, if you can take it. If not, shrug it off, and avoid asking for an opinion you don't want to hear.

Thanks everyone for the input. I have a great respect for my pole home as well as my friend, I just want to make sure that what I do now reflects that and does embrace a happy attitude and hopefully a positive connection with her studio and mine. <3
