I love encouragement and praise but I am also the type of person that wants people to nit-pick!!! I always have been that way, and it's also how I find myself teaching as well. I offer lots of encouragement, praise when I see progress, and quick points on what I saw that needed work to make it better.

Am I the only one with a MUSICAL background having trouble with DANCE counts???? I played the flute for seven years through school, I know how to count music but the way I hear dance counts throws my brain for such a loop! I can usually learn to the counts, but actually using them myself? Nope, doesn't work. I really wish I could though, I taught my first choreographed dance the other day and I felt like it really lacked the smooth synchronization because I couldn't direct them in counts.

As a hobby knitter, I've totally been considering selling legwarmers around the studio and mayhaps online to my fellow pole dancers…. this thought just keeps coming up…

Chem's got it! It really depends on how much you devote to each. If you have time to really dedicate to both, I believe you can have both. Some people may be genetically inclined towards one or another, but that doesn't mean they can't have both if they are willing to put in the work!!!

Aradia has been an amazing place for me. While the pole classes themselves are not specifically hip-hop oriented, the instructors do try to throw in different styles of music so the students can experiment with their movement. And of course there are the extra classes as Dakota mentioned, and often the instructors will take in requests from the students for their music.

I also recommend checking out NC Dance Institute, they offer some fun non-pole hip hop classes (Ronnie is an awesome choreographer and dancer there) for you to get the inspiration if you do not already have a background in hip hop dance (or if you do and want more). I love taking the extra classes off the pole when I can to build my repertoire of movements =)

This is interesting. I have had pain around my shoulder blade at varying degrees for about two years. My chiropractor does adjust a rib now and again when I go and I seem to be getting better and better, wonder if this is the same thing…

Hello everyone! I want to revive this thread a bit, though I know that a lot of what can be said already has, I just need a little support.

Hubby and I are talking about the possibility of having a baby in the somewhat near future. I have been pole dancing for three years but I feel like I only got serious a year ago, then had to take several months off after that to plan my wedding. I've been hardcore training since November 2012 after my wedding, but now I'm thinking about WHEN I want to have a baby.

So honestly, the biggest thing keeping me from having a baby right now has been my pole life. I feel like I'm finally making breakthroughs in my pole strength, and plus I just started teaching pole a month ago at my studio. So I'm trying to consider if or when I'm ready to step back from that for a while, or how much I'll have to step back realistically.

I am hoping that when I do get pregnant that I would be able to continue teaching beginner pole for a while, and perhaps after that modify some of the other classes we offer to continue teaching through most of my pregnancy- or even create a class that isn't so strenuous in the wrong places. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice?

I feel weird talking about this, its not something I have openly talked about with anyone except Hubby and my best friend… I spent so much energy on wanting to find the love of my life and my career goals that I never really focused much energy on the idea of being a mom… but that's where I'm at now.

I'd say definitely try out some other workouts like Yoga, zumba, pilates, any kind of dance (belly dance even?) – all of which you can do from a dvd or computer. I also second Veena's stuff, we all know she is amazing and her lessons are great =)

I am in with the crowd, static is the way to go IMHO. I feel it is a lot harder to try to hold on to a spinning pole (which is really focused on strength) than it is to work your way up to holds on a static. If you are already pretty strong then you could try spin, but most of us starting out need to build up to the strong holds that spinning pole requires. Besides that, when you're working on your strength it would be easier to keep control your moves and muscles engaged when you are not trying to worry about the momentum taking you around.

Just don't rush it if you're not very strong! I started inverting after 2 months but I soo wasn't ready… almost three years later I'm still paying for it with a achy shoulder!

And how a dancer works within the BEAT of the music itself.
