OMG I just tried the sets you mentioned and all I could manage was ten of each.. Baaalllssss! I am definitely adding this to my list of TO DO REGULARLY.

I just choreographed my first routine for a competition…
What I did was pick a song that really moved me, and free danced as much as possible with it. Then after getting a feel of how to move to the song, I mapped it out (by measures, that's the marching band geek in me). I also cut my song into several pieces so I could work sections (easier for me when trying to remember moves and for trying to hash out a particular section). I started making a list of moves I love or wanted to use, then slowly started putting them together in combinations and inserting them into my mapped song. So for example I knew there was a hard beat at one part of my song so I put my Chopper there to hit on that beat. From there, as others have said, you kinda gotta figure out what works and what doesn't, and if you have trouble with one part I would probably just take the one move and dance with it freestyle to the song to see what you can come up with to get in and out of it or to transition to. =)

That is awesome advice, Polergirl
So last night I went to practice my routine for my first amateur competition — and I've been so worried about the floorwork in my dance, because I can never choreograph it, and I feel like when I freestye it I just keep doing the same thing over and over..
BUT last night after running through it with my instructor watching, she actually COMPLIMENTED my floorwork. I'm so excited to know that I don't look like a fool when I just move the way I feel like moving. +1 to confidence!

I haven't checked out all the links offered but I was wondering if anyone had advice on floorwork and general style for a song that is very raw, pulsating, with lots of hard base and drum beats…. It seems like most dances are to songs that are more fluid and smooth, so I was wondering if you had any tricks to going with something like this or any videos for inspiration?

I think Lacrymosa is a great Evanescence song for the theme, but you should consider how you want the energy level to be – dark and ominous, or flashy and fun? Lacrymosa is very subdued so you will need a lot of long drawn out movement, maybe sort of slinky.
For something high energy, you might give "Creepy Crawler" by Zombie Girl a go… its a bit of an industrial sort but spunky =)
Or maybe "Wytches' Brew" by Omnia?
Or "2 Falken" by Faun?
(Can you tell I'm digging Asleep By Dawn's remix cd??)
Let me know if you make it, can't wait to see what you come up with!

I’m back in the game. My shoulder still hurts a lot but I had an hour of pole class today and didn’t kill myself 🙂
Will probably do some Kenpo tomorrow morning! -
I just cut my song down for a competition using Audacity. A little tricky but the program works well enough for the job!

Ell, I fell off the wagon for the past few days after stressing out my shoulder (not terribly ba since I needed to rest the shoulder) but today I’m back with a one-hour pole practice. Plus I danced at the club a Lot last night… That counts, right? 🙂

Yay! Much easier to chop down a song I think 😉

Most definitely!
Today I had a private so I can move up a few levels in my pole class. Actually learned a good bit but now my shoulder (which caused problems last year and stopped me inverting) is starting to stress again.

Funny, I had the exact OPPOSITE problem, Fallen Angel! I just got accepted into an amateur competition but the song had to be NO LONGER than four minutes… of course I discovered audacity and chopped up a few bits so it works =)
GOOD LUCK!!!

Aahhhh I missed my classes tonight because I forgot to bring the proper clothing =(
Tomorrow I'll be working out in the morning and then trying to create my first bit of choreography (oh lord) in the evening for my first amateur pole competition!
