Yes. Of all the lessons I've tried and tested, I would say Veena's help very much for learning moves.

As always, I would say go for some in-person lessons if you can, at a studio, but if you cannot, then go for these. They're great, and have helped me a lot to determine a lot of issues I'm having with my own dancing.

What I meant was to give an example, and splay-legs was the only thing I could come up with. Sorry. It IS more like a variation of the splits, certainly, but sometimes I just see it as a "LOOK AT MY -" you know… >_>

What I meant was that, if we clean up pole dancing, I don't think it will be pole dancing the way we think of it. The same thing can be said for burlesque: If you clean it up, it's not burlesque anymore. I like dancing either one because it's fun, it's expression, and it helps me feel sexy and womanly and strong.

And, what I meant by having children in it was that, if we can all agree with the idea that we want the sensuality kept, I'd rather not see kids engaging in that. Hence why I said "If we kept it sexy…"

I am not ashamed that pole dance came from strippers, and I'm not afraid of it. Burlesque made strippers, and strippers were burlesque for a long time. They've parted ways, but I see nothing wrong with it.

But, I agree with the others: If you make it a sport, without the sensual, artistic thing, I wouldn't be interested. I see a "Goddess" as a strong, beautiful, SENSUAL woman who isn't afraid to be sexy. If we took that out of Pole dance, well…it wouldn't be Pole dance for me. It'd just be another thing that I'm not interested in, just like gymnastics.

Wow, this topic has certainly exploded!

I figured I would add my humble opinion, though hopefully I won't be repeating some other topics already discussed.

I would prefer if Pole dancing was somewhat more regulated, but not completely. I enjoy the fact that a lot of it is all about interpretation…rather than having everything laid out, we're allowed to explore and experiment, we're allowed to dance, and thus express. If it was ALL regulated and set down, we'd all have the same moves, and we would all look pretty much the same. This is a big reason why I can't tell one gymnast from another…

However, I've thought about Pole dancing in the Olympics…and, well, I don't agree with it. Since pole dancing has that sexy aspect, a lot of the moves are splay-legged and such, to remove the sexy would be to take away a huge part of it, for me. It's like trying to take away the nudity from Burlesque…it's possible, but it's also not really Burlesque, is it?

And, if we kept the sexy, think about it this way…when do people start training for the olympics? At what age do our athletes start? Do you REALLY want a child working on moves like this? I sure wouldn't! Sex (and sexiness) is the privilege of the adult, so I get really weird about children engaging in some of these things. They may not know what it is the move is meant to do, and they may be innocent…but, again, would you want a kid on stage doing Burlesque?

I see it kind of like cheerleading right now, where we're at. It's huge, it's getting accepted…but we're not a "sport," even if we are doing something that people can get injured doing. I think that's the first (and, perhaps only) step I would be comfortable with…recognition as a sport or style of dance. Keep it accessible.

I'm impressed he knew how! XD

My husband is a little scared of the pole, since one time he went for a jump and introduced pole to family jewels…poor guy! But, he's getting a little better!

I would also love a proper tutorial on "The Roxy!"

I've seen lots of people do it, but unfortunately, I can't seem to figure it out. I get all tangled and screwed up…it's so frustrating!

February 9, 2011 at 2:31 pm in reply to: Corsets, bustiers, waist cinchers…any suggestions?

Akkis2, I know corsets and things are really expensive, but I'll tell you one thing…don't expect a cheap one to be comfortable. I've tried a LOT of corsets, and anything below $100 is really…umm, unfortunate to wear. Granted, I have a little bit of an extreme figure when it comes to corsetry (my hips are very high, and my waist is pretty small, considering) so cheaper made corsets either barely hang on to me, or they dig in at the back like crazy…I end up with big red marks and feeling like I'm gonna pay for it for some time. I really wish I could afford one with proper steel bones, but right now it's not gonna happen.

That aside, however, you may want to check out your lingerie stores, because that's where most of mine have come from. They're pretty close when it comes to mimicking a good corset.

Also, if you're planning on removing it part way through, and you'd like it to be even a little bit sexy, I'd personally reccommend getting one with a zipper front, or getting a zipper put in. I did that, and because of the nature of the zipper (since the corset is "under pressure" you need something heavy duty) I matched it with the embroidery, so it didn't look so bad. Worked great, too! The hooks and eyes in most corsets are really frustrating and difficult to take off, so check in to see what you can deal with, and how you can make it work for you.

I agree with Nymph…some people like different poles for different reasons. It's ALWAYS humid here, as I live on an island in the ocean, so I have no issues. Someone in a hotter or dryer climate might find a different finish works well for them.

    Hey!

For beginners, I would certainly reccommend giving Veena's lessons a try. Even for a month, just to check it out; they give you a great idea as to what you can work on, things you can try, and has strength and stretching exercises, too.

Otherwise, you can look on youtube. Many "beginner" videos will just show all kinds of slow dancing, a little bit of turns and things, some floor work…but some of them are good.

However, I would say…PLEASE make sure you're careful! I know ballet requires an impressive amount of flexibility and strength, a lot of control, but this form of dance is very demanding, too. You can really mess something up if you get into a move and suddenly realize you don't have the strength to pull it off!

Also, it's great to have you here! We're always happy to have new people around https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

    Hey there,

I've got the Lil' Mynx stainless steel version, and I…honestly haven't had any problems with it. I've got short ceilings, too, and it fits perfectly well. I've never had it fall I've never had any assembly problems.

I've touched and slightly played with a powder coated one, and I would say it might be somewhat grippier than mine.

Really, I find that it's fine, if you keep it clean and DON'T ever wear any metal on the pole. I'm serious. Any chrome, stainless, powdered…any pole, don't wear rings or whatever. It'll make things…worse. Anyways, um, clean it regularly, work on your grip, and I think you'll be fine, whatever you get. I like mine, and I can do whatever I want on it 🙂

Lol, I love you guys 😛

    Basically what you're saying is…WHATEVER I CAN! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif

I think that I used to just kamikaze my way through my workouts, which may be why I got so freakin' tired so fast, because after like, 20-30 minutes, I was totally tired out!

    I realize the point is to "keep your heart rate up," but how high should it be? Should I worry about it? Are some pauses okay? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif I know so little about workouts like this! Most of my knowledge is in strength training and understanding how muscles work, and maybe a little bit about fat burning Oo;

    Awesome!

    1: Runemist34

2: Pole, would like to do Poi spinning and yoga

3: Pur (with the little thingy above the U that I can't do typing) Natural Deodorant (from Shoppers Drug mart), it's a solid, and it works pretty good, unless I totally get crazy with the sweating. I switched to this from an anti-perspirant (because I heard they do bad, bad things) and it doesn't work quite as well as the anti-perspirant, but it still works enough to get me through the day!

4: British Columbia, on Vancouver Island. It's humid all the time, usually we have mild weather, but the extremes are coming up more and more.

What I would recommend is just getting to know the boundaries between yourself and them. Obviously, we know our physical boundaries, and we tend not to blend lives a lot with strangers, but when expectations and things like this come up, we get a little muddled.

I like to think of it as a give and take; if they give, and you take, suddenly they feel justified, and you've given something in return…your own power, your sense of choice and self. If they try to give, and you DON'T take, their shit lands on the floor (excuse the language) and they have nothing left to do but face it.

So, here's the thing: You know you aren't some kind of golddigging hooker, and you're not a trophy wife, you love him, and he loves you. Of COURSE you want to make a good impression, but the best way to do that is to be yourself; I, personally, wouldn't want to consort with people who are bitchy and expect you to be exactly the same as them. I suppose that's why this works. Anyways, when they say "Oh god, is that a stripper pole?" my response is usually "Yep." and it can work for you, as well. Why deny it? Why get mad? It's just their expectations, not yours. Their shit, not yours. You don't need to take it.

Sorry, it's a little complicated when I try to explain it fast. Hmm. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif

Heey, this is an awesome idea! However, I have a little question…

I've got some awesome shoes, but unfortunately the ankle part is too loose (I've got little ankles, compared to the size of my feet) and the ankle strap is either clear plastic, or there's some elastic part where the buckle is. Any thoughts toward making that a little smaller, so I can wear my huge, awesome shoes?

Hey Eagle, I'm not sure if you got my message (should be in your inbox!) but I was thinking I'd not mind trading. I've not gotten into the second disk yet, but I think I'd rather work on the basic/intermediate stuff, and then eventually move up! So, I'm willing to trade, if you're still cool with that?
