Miraine: Thank you for the quick response! I know it's not really fair of me to compare myself to people who have been dancing for a long time, or have edited their work, or are a much higher level than me…it's just…lol, difficult! I sound so whiny, but it's true! I look at people with great bodies and sexy moves and beautiful hair and clothes and stuff, and it's hard not to go "I'll never be like that!"

I used to hide from cameras, too, but generally I'm okay with it now. I've learned a lot more about myself and how I like myself to look (and how to dress!) so I don't hate what I look like quite so much. I've even had a couple of photoshoots with friends or whatever!

Letting someone else do the editing might be interesting, though!

And, lastly, the grip issue is sort of an example of a larger issue…I would love to be able to troubleshoot myself, but when I look at a video of me, I just tend to go "Oh, no, that's too slow," or "That doesn't look right," without any ability to figure out what's going on. The example is the grip thing…if I do any spin with split grip, it's super slow, and I've tried everything I could think of to fix it!

But, oh well. Perhaps these things will get better with time and exposure.

    * small edit: When I said "I wont say I don't agree, because I don't" I meant that I DO agree that video taping is useful. It is, totally. It was a double negative, and I just realized I probably worded that wrong >_>

Alright, I don't want to say that I don't agree, because I don't. However…I don't video tape myself, because it's always so depressing! I hate looking at myself on tape, I hate seeing all the problems, and I hate comparing myself to all the beautiful, graceful women I see here on this site, and youtube.

In particular, however, I don't really know how to troubleshoot from video. All I really know is "Something's off" and the best I can do is keep jerking away at it, and hope that it eventually looks nice.

So, what do you guys think? How can I tell if I'm doing a split grip right? Or how to become more graceful or fluid, or whatever?

Finally! This will make things SO much easier, and bring us closer to a proper regulation for moves, what makes a move, and what makes a variation, and all that stuff!

    Hey Yogini!

I'm impressed 😉 I like details, so that's totally cool! I still have to learn a lot more about yoga, I think, before I can really feel like I'm doing it properly, such as breathing and what everything is called and all.

I went looking for another book to supplement the one I have, and came away appreciating the one I have even more! It's basically everything I was looking for, and I spent a portion of my day at work reading it. It was a slow day 😉

I'll check out the website! Thanks so much!

    Wow, thanks everyone!

I knew that most yoga classes were at least an hour, which is why I wasn't sure if you could really see any benefit (other than the mental benefit!) from it with just 10 minutes a day. But, apparently so 😉

I'm not normally a "morning person," as I tend to stay up quite late, and getting up early with my sleep habits is nearly impossible! I don't often sleep well, and even when I do, I just want to stay there forever~ my bed is nice and warm and comfortable, and for those few extra hours, I don't have to bother with the world!

However, I always notice that, if I get up early, I feel a lot better all day, I'm less grumpy and I actually tend to sleep better. It's also getting harder to sleep in now, because my blinds suck, and it's totally daylight in my room when the sun comes up!

And, well, the husband is a daytimer. He likes to be up by 9am…at least!

So, perhaps a little yoga in the morning to wake myself up and get myself going would be really good! It would give me something to look forward to.

I'm still getting used to a lot of the names and poses and things, but I've got an awesome book on Hatha yoga, and it talks all about the different poses and focus points and such, as well as categorizing them by type; twists, standing, sitting, etc. Very interested in that website, Dustbunny! Thanks!

Anyways, I should stop rambling and get on with it, as there is much housework and pole to do, and I've still got work! I'm feeling accomplished 😉

    Thanks again, everyone! 🙂

I agree with Mechie, Nymph and Glitter…let him know that you aren't ready for him to watch you. It takes time to get good at something like this, and you can tell him that, if he wants to watch, you would like to have some fun things to show him, AFTER you've practiced them, so they look good!

And, if he argues that "he doesn't care," then I would say, well YOU care!

I haven't noticed a difference, and I tend to grow hair super fast!

What would effect it is if you put lotion on after you shave; lotion can make you very slippery, and it can be quite dangerous when you pole!

Jenny, yes…it's true. I'm living testament.

    In the last 2 years, I've grown 4 cup sizes…from a D, to an F. Yep, I am now a 34 F.

The thing about bras, I've learned, is that the cup size is relative to the band size. See, most people look me up and down and go "You don't look THAT big!" There's two reasons for this: One, because I can rarely find any shirts that fit my big boobs, that also fit a small waist! So, I end up looking larger overall. And, two, because I'm a 34 around the waist, the boobs themselves don't LOOK that big, because compared to someone who is, say, a 38 or a 40 F, I'm tiny!

And, if you don't believe me, go to your local bra shop, and ask for the same cup size in two radically different band sizes…you'll see what I mean! Also, you can look up on the internet about how to measure yourself for a bra. It depends on the difference around from your bust to your waist. That't what makes your band size!

I started getting boobs at 16, I was as they say a "late bloomer" https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif And now look at me! Sheesh! If I could share, I would. I don't really like spending $275 on two bras. Good bras, mind, but still!

I will say that I've heard a lot about women losing cup size due to their exercise, and someone once told me (I have nothing to back this up, so I don't know if it's true!) that older fat is harder for the body to metabolize. Hence, it will take the fat you put on more recently…such as puberty! Like your boobs! Mostly, that's what they are…fat. And some baby-milk-making stuff.

Oh, and special note: I've been off the birth control pill for 2 years, also. I don't know if that has anything to do with my sudden increase in boob, but I have reason to believe that it's related. It's also helped me not be depressed, and feel healthier, in general!

  • Also, on Felix's website, it has that video filed under "http://www.felixcaneinc.com/fcvideos/video_Detail.php?ID=277

So, perhaps something was misfiled? Or else she's perfectly happy with the place she got. She scored 3rd in the Women's Pole Fit section. I mean, 3rd is pretty good!

  • Well, from looking at the entries I could find, I have two things: Felix is looking as hot as ever, especially with her hair like that…

And the Pole Champion they named, Mai Sato, was great. Seriously, she was. There were a lot of other tricks that Felix has never done (as far as I'm aware).

Also, in looking at Sato's video, I took a peek at the comments…a whole bunch of them had been "Hidden due to too many Dislikes" if you get my meaning. Enough people on Youtube thought that these comments were inappropriate, or not to their liking in some way. You wanna know what they said? Things like "Wow, she's just amazing!" and "The next Felix Cane!"

So, I'm thinking there may be some odd rivalry going on here. Lots of people love Felix, including me, because she has a very impressive style and she's very strong, and sensual. However, I get the impression that some people may not want to admit that she may no longer be the absolute epitome of what one can do on a pole!

Think about it this way: The person that said the IPDFA was fake and unfair had their comment up that high because twelve people had "liked" it. These may be the exact same people that "disliked" those comments on Sato's videos…as well as her actual video. 30 people disliked it, versus 25 who liked it.

I think it's just stupid rivalry.

I found a place that sells them…not but two blocks from my house, too! I bought me some leopard-print FoodUndeez, and they work like a charm! I'm so happy to have something a little fun to wear while I'm dancing, and that saves my feet from the linoleum!

Thank you so much, ladies! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_heart1.gifhttps://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_flower.gif

Okies! Good to know 😉 I'm totally excited! I just bought some foot undies 🙂 And also I've just learned that my hot black shoes work really well on the linoleum floor, so that's awesome, too!

  • Hey Mechie! I know how it feels…I've had Veena's lessons a couple of times, and I have to say, they are amazing! I really like the fact that she's very sure to walk you through from simple to full on move, and making sure you have the strength to do it. She has lots of strength moves, too, so you can be very sure you have the strength to get the moves! Even ones that help with grip 😉

To be honest, I haven't yet done a proper inversion. I don't have the strength, and I'm working on it now. It's been a long time and I didn't know what was up…Veena took one look at me through my webcam and told me exactly what was up!

Fear of falling on my head…I have a fear of being upside down! But, I'm getting used to it! I'm working on the CKR, and I've been lifting up from the correct position from the floor, so I know where my legs should be, and everything. I've almost got it from a climb!

I use pillows as my crash mat. I'm pretty sturdy, I can take a hit…though I realize it is better to have a crash mat.

And, for your fourth question…I think that takes some time to learn the right place, and I think it takes some patience and instruction to figure out exactly what to do! Perhaps ask your instructor in class for a bit of help on that one…though good on you for gripping with your calves and stuff!

The inversion, to me, is a pretty big milestone. I'm really looking forward to being able to do that move, so I'm working hard to get the strength up!

Interesting question: How simple are we talking? No fireman spin? Or slightly further from that?

There are a couple of moves that may be helpful for getting used to the idea of taking your feet off the ground. First, I would say just the general Pole hold…it gives you a sense of strength, even if she can't do it for very long!

Next, um…I forget what we call it here. The Half spin, I think? You can slowly move that one into lifting both legs, and since it's just a short little thing, it's easier to get used to, and you can even bail out of the lifting-both-legs and still have it look good!

The other one is one I fould on Jamilla's DVDs, and it's kind of like…a sit-spin (or a side seated spin? I dunno what it's called!) only…halfway. You just step around the pole with the inside leg as far as you can, and then follow it with your outisde leg. Really simple, and you can move that one into a brief both-feet-off deal, too.

I know how frustrating it can be to be too scared to do something that you KNOW you're strong enough for! I feel that way with most of my split grip moves, and with the CKR right now. She'll get it! We all know she will, and so do you! So just keep encouraging her, and take it slow 😉
