April 26, 2011 at 11:11 am in reply to: coping with anxiety?!? 🙁

Hey guys, I figured I'd chip in my bit, too.

When I was younger and in high school, no one knew that there was anything wrong with me…I was just shy, and quiet. Everyone besides my mom, whom I would go to every day, and I'd cry, and I'd tell her all the horrible things I felt every day, and it just got worse and worse. I eventually dropped out…and it took me four months of constant, severe depression before I bounced back.

Since then, I've seen any number of counsellors, my doctor has tried and tried to give me drugs (which I will not take, ever), and NO ONE ever bothered to tell me that depression and anxiety sometimes go hand in hand! I wish I had been told that!

I took a year "off" of life about five years ago, because I was lucky and Husband and our roommate had good jobs, and i could go on EI, and I went about trying to fix myself. It was difficult, but I did, eventually, make huge leaps in getting rid of my depression. It's almost completely gone at this point.

But, lo and behold what was lurking behind it…anxiety, which was getting worse. Much worse, now that I wasn't burying it with depression! And, finally I had an explanation about why I would freak out at bars, and why presenting things at school would make me feel like i wanted to die.

Unfortunately, I have two types of anxiety: Social anxiety, which makes me appear shy even if I'm not, and can (apparently!) result in panic attacks, and Generalized anxiety, which doesn't result in panic attacks…it's more like I worry all the time, as my "normal state" as compared to other people.

So, through my dealings with depression, I came to several conclusions, and found that certain things worked well for me. I intend to apply them to my anxiety…though I don't feel like I have "time" right now. Silliness.

First off: Identification of the problem. I found a lot of people with depression seem to identify it as a personality trait, rather than an issue that is separate from themselves. Yes, it lives inside you, and yes, it's hard to tell when YOU end, and depression begins. That's kind of the point, I think…just the same as we can have physical diseases, and they aren't a part of us, either. So, it's not "I am a depressive," it's more like "I have depression."

And, on that note, figure out what it means for you. What happens when you are depressed or anxious? Do you torture yourself with all of those horrible things you MAY have to deal with in time? Do you go through the motions in your head? Do you consider all of the "what if's" before the situation plays out? Do certain things or situations trigger you?

And the big one: How do you talk to yourself? In your head, I mean. We're always talking to ourselves, and it's important to be aware. I believe this is a part of "Mindfulness."

On that note, meditation can help a lot. Just simple meditation, where you sit, and you listen to yourself. It's a tricky thing, I haven't quite got it yet…but you let yourself think, and you just see where it goes, and you're aware of it. Even if it's painful, because you learn about yourself that way, and you can really learn to slow down and be in the moment.

Next up: Getting rid of that stuff. It's hard. Really, it's hard. But, it's doable! I found for me that it's about balance. I started with "Three things that made me happier today," and that's not necessarily that they made me HAPPY, just a little bit (or a lot) more happy than before. Sometimes even three of those things is hard, but they are there. Then, I moved to five or even ten things.

I also stopped participating in the News, because that's just a great big freak out waiting to happen. It's so sensationalist, and I don't like it. I haven't watched television in 5 years, and I'm far happier for it. But, you don't have to do that…I just found that it allowed me to stop having so much horrible input.

Depending on what goes on for you, the challenge is to find a counter for it. Things like "What if a car hits me when I cross the street?" could, potentially, be countered with something like "What if it doesn't, and something wonderful happens to me instead?" The "something wonderful" can be filled in with whatever you want…but it's important to be as realistic as possible. You've gotta be able to believe it could happen!

Like I said, it's tough. But, it's doable!

    I wish you all luck!

Well, I have to say, first of all…it was really nice of you to dance for their fundraiser!

I would say that the studio could make a valid argument that they never once actually said that you were instructing with them, and that they had only put up an advertisement for beginner pole lessons, not advanced stuff.

That said, I would counter with the fact that the way they wrote it creates the very strong implication that you DO work there, and that you didn't really give your permission to be filmed or for them to put your dancing (and your Name) on Facebook.

Anyways, I think that if they would like to have someone teach an instructor how to do things, a money trail should be created, so that they know they are getting quality instruction, so they can prove to their students that there was proper instruction, and so that you are properly compensated for your services.

Teaching friends is one thing, but when those friends work in a studio? I think there's a little bit of a line drawn for teaching new moves.

I'm going back to Nanaimo for the weekend, gonna clean the old apartment so that I can get my deposit back, and probably have a nice little dinner with my mom, sister, stepfather and husband on Saturday evening.

Hehe, that sounds like me, too! My body knows how to complain, that's for sure!

I've not tried the reflexology thing, but I'll give it a go if the elbow starts getting bitchy again. If it IS tendonitis (which, to be honest, is likely…I get tendonitis in EVERYTHING) then strengthening the muscles will help a lot with that.

I'm totally fine with being a Push up wimp with you 😉 Though it sounds like you're a little farther along than I am! And yes, I also refuse to increase the amount of push up till I can get them right! It's funny, push ups are one of the most well-known exercises, and yet they seem so complex when you're trying to learn how to do them!

Hey! I've got a Lil' Minx non-rotating pole, and I lived on the third, second, and first floor (in that order!) and had no complaints at all! Even when I bailed and landed hard on the floor https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I don't think any spinning of the pole should transfer sound, either. It would likely have to grind on the ground to do that, and if your pole is grinding on the ground…I think there would be something wrong!

Can you not return them for the correct size? Normally people will do that, whether it was internet-purchased or not!

I hate to see you have to give them up! They're so pretty!

To create a caffeine addiction takes a very short amount of time; often one or two days, depending on how much you have, and your body chemistry. To come off it also depends on how much you are dependant. It took me two weeks to feel normal again after quitting caffeine (lol, sounds like smoking, doesn't it?)

Since it sounds like your headaches are quite regular, it could either be something in your system that builds up quickly, or that you do at least once a week that causes it to get worse. Has this happened to you for your whole life? Did it start when you hit puberty?

I usually try to figure these things out by asking lots of questions. If your normal doctor is unable to help, find a new one. Go to a specialist. Anything you have to do! I hate to see people live with pain!

I suspect what you're talking about is a migraine, and those are difficult to deal with. I have them, often around certain times of the month, but I used to get them far more often.

So, first of all, what does your doctor think of them? Have you managed to go to the doctor while having one? Does he say "tension headache" or "migraine"? They're similar for some people, and very different for others! Do you get sensitive to light or sound during your headaches?

Otherwise, I know that for me, my migraines were caused by caffeine, especially since I used to drink so much of it. Seriously, I'd go through 2 litres in half a day. Pop was all I drank, and I was told I had to stop. It sucked, but I did…I'm now very careful about how much, what kind, and when I have caffeinated drinks!

Have you noticed any patterns, such as time of month (or, time of your girly cycle), what you may have eaten or drank within the last day, or stress levels? Sometimes the body will react to things we aren't aware of.

I have hope that, if nothing I've mentioned is helpful, someone here can help!

I would love to, but unfortunately I just moved, and my pole is down till I can get my stepfather to come up and install it! He's the only one with the tools and stuff to do it, unfortunately 🙁

It depends on the spin, for me. It takes me a while to get that kind of strength going, so it takes at least a few months of semi-casual poling to get there for the basic Fireman spin. Others…well, I've not gotten strong enough yet!

April 17, 2011 at 10:32 pm in reply to: Dance now…OR save it for later???

I just dance to anything! I know I'm not close to proper inversions, but you know what? Restrictions breeds artistry, I think, so I'd say…go for it! What if you discover something amazing while you're dancing, like a fancy move you love to do? Great music will always be there to inspire you, so why not use it?

And, besides that, the "wait till you're better" can go sit in the corner. You ARE better. If you feel like you want to do a certain move at a certain point in a song, and you can't do that move yet…remember, you aren't stuck with just one dance per song! You could do thousands of different things to the same song!

I know that, for me, if I "waited till I'm better," I wouldn't end up dancing at all, and it would be sad. I've got huge, high standards for myself, and I have to learn to relax and just do it. So, I'm a big advocate for that from others, too!

In other words…if you love the song, dance to it. You can always change things up as you add more moves to your dancing…or not, if you like it the way it is!

Hehe, I know what you mean, dreaming of all those awesome moves! I keep thinking I want to get into inversions and such…but I know I don't have the ab or arm strength! It's hard for me to stick to the foundational moves, when what I really want is way up there at the top of the pole, so to speak! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Super happy to see more people from Canada!

    Hey Dwiizie! Welcome to SV!

I know what you're saying about the pole being daunting, and having so many beautiful dancers all over the place! I feel the same way a lot, especially since I'm not…er, "perfectly sized."

However, I would say that your pole journey should begin and end with YOU! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

The lessons here on SV are very, very good. She's got strength training and stretching classes, as well as many fun dance moves, and routines to practice. I also think Veena really brings you in easy, and makes it harder as most people would evolve, naturally. I've tried various DVD's, and even classes at a studio…every studio is different, they may give you different names for various moves, and go at it a little differently. However, I find that having people around to help spot you and give you a hand with things you might be having issues with.

That said, this forum is also really good for asking questions about moves!

It sounds like you have a lot of dance experience, and I know that a few ladies (Including Veena!) are into hooping, as well!

My advice for getting started? Search out some beginner pole dancing on Youtube, or on the website here under "Video," and just get a feel for what you may want to work on. You could also make some goals, check out moves in the higher up areas, and see what kind of music you like!

Goodness, that sounds like a lot! But don't worry, you'll get it. We all started right where you are…and sometimes, we go back, too!

I also agree with this, as I've had some really bad issues with Paypal and their absolutely horrible customer service and policies. I wouldn't mind using my credit card to pay!
