I only just read the full line-up earlier today and wow what a line up! The Veeners who went to spectate must’ve screamed themselves hoarse from all the awesome:) And congrats to Karol! Great work https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif I so can’t wait for the youtube clips to start:) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_thumleft.gif

Normally I get jealous when you folks in the States or the UK talk about having workshops with our pole heroes but with Amy, I can smugly say I’ve had a lesson and she performed at our open pole night too. AND she’s coming back to Wellington soon to do some more sessions at our studio so I’m looking forward to that:) And she’s so lovely too! And tiny!! She just floats through her moves while I feel a bit like I galumph like an elephant https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_elephant.gif
And in fact, through the wonders of youtube, here is a clip of her performing at our studio (I’m so observant I didn’t even notice someone with a camera while I was watching!!)

Just wondering how you place your hands when you’re getting into it? I got some advice from someone to place the upper hand quite close to the upper leg when getting into it (although hook your upper knee quite high in the first place) and that works quite well for me. Also, I notice some people go into it with both hands starting above the upper knee – personally, I find having one hand placed above then one between where my knees are (or at least will be) gets my hips into a much better position for lining up than if they were close together, in which case the body is kinda bent inwards. That goes towards the slipping side of things anyway – the pain side gets lessened by lots of practice and finding the "sweet spot" below your knee cap….

I found with the standing fireman that if I try and do it my normal dominant fireman directions (leading with the left leg), then it turns into a giant fail, but when I do it the other way, it works beautifully! Someone had pointed out to me that the best way to do it is to end up so whichever leg is behind in the fireman spin should be your better climbing leg (I know we should be practising both directions blah blah blah but I still have a better side!!) because you’re more used to the climbing action on this side. So, as I climb better with my left leg bracing against the pole, leading with the right leg on the standing fireman works better because then my better climbing leg is in a position to do what it does best! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif It works for me anyway!

I suspect if your teachers have supervised then this may have been checked for already, but are your hands gripping too high? You’ve got to remember to more or less be in the same sort of body position that you would be on the ground and that includes hand placement. That’s the only thing I can think of! I doubt it would be your body type to be honest.

Yeah, I found the instructions pretty bewildering too! I kept thinking "they appear to be clear and well laid out…so why can I not understand what they mean??". Luckily for me I had a mate who was well experienced with putting up the old style ones (and he’s also a builder and knows useful constructy things) and once he sorted the bits and pieces, we could see it was pretty easy. But yeah, getting it up that first time is trciky – I totally agree they should do a dvd for the new range!

I had some friends come over and FINALLY got my pole up with their help so yay for that! However, when hanging out with my boy today, he was mostly playing computer games while I was reading in the sun…or rushing home to sort out my pole:/ And now I’m at my parents’ place for dinner while he’s at home! Not the most together V day but we had some *ahem* time together this morning and I had put together a V Day present that was a basket with some of his favourite things in it and then I tricked him into finding it on the front porch by pretending I was scared that I’d been followed from my car (where I’d kept the present) by an over-enthusiastic ginger cat that I needed him to protect me from!

That looked great! I especially liked the chair stuff in the first routine https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

It’s like woo woo and off they go, flying round that pole like nothing can hold them down (but in a completely controlled way though)! (please note this is meant to be a compliment, just in case it sounds really weird!!) https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_salut.gif

Hokay, here’s what I would say:
-def practice against the wall. If you’re not making it up to the pole, it’s not an arching problem, it’s probably a "commitment" problem. I know this because I’ve had this problem with handstands in the past. It’s a lot about the fear of kicking over too far, which is why practising against the wall is great because you will learn just how much kick you need to put in it. Another possibility is finding a spotter who you trust completely and kicking up into a handstand in front of them so they can grab/hold your feet. Kinda like the wall but less fear of falling/slipping to the side etc. But the key is to find someone you do trust to catch you because otherwise you will continue to have the commitment problem (if that’s what it is – again, this is based completely on my prev experience)
-when you do practise against the pole, try bending one of your legs at the knee with it turned out (much the same position as you would have your leg in a CKR). This provides a stabler target to rest against the pole then once the other leg is up there, you can straighten both from a position where the pole is supporting you. I’m pretty sure it’s the first leg that bends btw. This part is a bit hard to explain in words but hopefully you get the gist. Good luck! -
Ha I think we must have a touch of pole-twin-itis ‘cos I too was doing the yogini the other and slipped and slammed down on my knee! And I’m pretty sure you’ll always need skin for that one (feel free to correct me on this anyone!). I haven’t blamed someone else for a pole mishap but it runs in my family to get flustered when something happens and blame it on the person who just happened to be standing nearby talking to us at the time!
That apple story – SO cute though!!

That’s what I did when I was looking at how much it would cost to get a pole here to NZ
