I second the recommendation for trying yoga’s bow pose- I find the lock comes more from the ‘bowing’ of your legs than just grabbing them per se. So think if you were on the ground, you’re not just having hand meet ankle then leaving thighs limply on the ground, you’re engaging your whole leg and trying to lift your thighs as well, while pushing your ankles strongly into your hands. What works for me anyway!:)

I think part of the problem with things like chopsticks is that it's strength as well as flexibility to be able to pull your legs up into position (I guess it's strength in the hip flexors especially but maybe quads and/or hammies as well?). I have long had front and back splits and on a good day, could probably push to a bit of an oversplit on the ground when I have something to brace against but pulling up into a good chopsticks is a bit beyond me because (I think) my flexors aren't quite strong enough. My 2 cents worth anyway, not sure if this helps!

No matter how long I've been holding, no matter how many similar moves I can do, and no matter how much excellent advice I get, I STILL can't do the cupid! Please don't tell me it's all in the hips, I already know that:) One time when my flexibility works against me! There was one incandescent day several years ago when I did it once brilliantly and that was a magical moment but the elusive cupid has not been seen since *sob*…

Also, the Marion Amber is still proving elusive but I'm hoping that at least one of the pole people I see when I'm overseas next month will be able to help with that!

Here's a thread for this move that I started a while back that has some good advice in it. I still haven't managed to get it but a whole pile of other people seem to have and may be able to add more to the discussion:)

I don't go into too much detail but I did a blog post about my progress with handstands not that long ago and am happy to elaborate on any of it:) https://www.studioveena.com/blogs/view/The_Handstand_Project_20120503041143

To add to the NZ vs Australia point – "commuting" to Australia from NZ is not actually that easy! At least 3 hours in  a plane plus normally quite expensive, esp if you're earning in NZ dollars. Moving to Aussie's probably a better plan and visiting NZ sometimes – that's what a lot of Kiwis do:)

Ha I saw the thumbnail of this on facebook and went oh she's just doing the starfish with her hands on. I didn't realise she was completely bent in half and facing the other way! Good grief, my back is aching just thinking about it!

Luckily for me my bad side split is nowhere near as bad as my bad side invert, so I can get away with it:) So my advice would be to pick which is the lesser of two evils (ie. which are you more likely to get or at least fake – bad side split or invert) and go with that!

I have to say though, a move I really like, and which I've only ever seen David Owen doing, is the jade switch. Like a scorpio switch but with a jade – amazing and impressive!

I was a runner before I was a poler and now it's a bit of a mission balancing the two to an adequate level but it's worth it as I find them quite complementary. When I was younger though I hated running and it was a family joke for a while about how weird it was that I started doing half marathons when I used to do just about anything to get out of the mandatory cross country.

My problem is the running that makes you faster is not the running I enjoy. I'm incredibly happy when I get out on an interesting trail run and the meditation properties of it are so beneficial. Get me doing speedwork though and it's a real challenge to remember why I love running.

Hey Glitter – here it is. You reminded me that I haven't actually watched it in ages so had to struggle a bit to find where it was! Even though her actual pole moves aren't perfect, I still love to watch it because she's engaging and looking like she's having fun and actually working with the music instead of in spite of it (which is one of my big issues when it comes to truly enjoying a routine). It was one of the first pole clips I saw on youtube and even thought I've seen hundreds since, this one has still stuck with me, which I can't say for a lot of others!

Here's the other one of hers that I really like as well, again not high difficulty but I like it for similar reasons:) I am a sucker for polers with obvious dance training though!
