I agree. I think contemporary and pole go so beautifully together. Check out NYPolerina on youtube (Tracee Kafer, she's on SV too) if you want some examples. I get goosebumps watching her,

Honestly, though, I think being a well-rounded dancer would be MOST beneficial to pole. All styles have something to offer. I'd love to take a bunch of different dance classes, if I could.

I feel you Pankake! I get impatient with warming up my body and pole in this crappy climate!

If you can sew, I suggest just heading over to the fabric department of your local craft store. They have trims that already include elastic and make great garters. You could buy yards at a time for super cheap, then just cut and stitch.

i'm still working on figuring it out, but I definitely like to add in a little sass (hence the user name!). Subtle hair flips, sexy spins, a little added extra that might make you smile. When I freestyle at home, its more slow and gooey. Not slithery or sexy, not floaty… what's the right word? Trancey, maybe.

I mean, even a well-executed fireman spin can stop friends in their tracks! especially if you invite them to try afterwards and they see that it's difficult.

I would do the butterfly (in my display picture) or the reverse grab spin, I think. Those are the two moves I'm capable of that have the most wow factor, I think. And I generally don't mess them up like I do my other moves, haha.

I usually just bust out one go-to trick. I am NOT going to do a whole dance performance for them just because they feel they have a right. Doing one trick impresses them, stops them from asking for more, and honestly makes me feel kinda like a badass 😛 Showing off can be fun sometimes! Just be sure you're safe and these people don't get ideas about what they can do with you just because you have a pole.

What I found helpful at first was to hold my crossed foot and to really pull it towards the pole. This made my thigh grip more secure so I wasn't worried about falling even when the pain was awful!! Once you push through the pain a few times and know what to expect, try letting go of your foot and just using your thighs to hang on. You should be able to do it!

Well that does pose a problem. Do any of your friends or family have an old couch in their basement or something that they'd be willing to lend? that would be a super cheap alternative. Keep your eye out at yard sales or thrift shops, too! You don't need to like the couch, just the cushions 🙂

I just use my couch cushions. They fit together into 4×4 square around my pole, it's perfect.
