I agree with Serzi: sometimes it’s good to take a break from the hard stuff and go back to basics. I got some good advice like that from this website. Try slowing moves down… A LOT. That helps a lot with control, grace STRENGTH and making it look pretty. Serzi also said something I like: A girl can do tons of tricks and they may look cool, but the girls that are graceful and controlled that have mastered a toe drag look the most experienced to me… they look like better dancers, I think. It’s all in how you WEEERRK it! I’m like you: I’m a little stuck with skill level, but if I take the advice of these other girls and really master spins, grips, etc, that will make transitions easier and prettier. And I am amazed at how many different spins there are out there! Oh, and try to do spins on both sides, if you haven’t already. Keeps you from getting dizzy, works both sides in order to keep your body balanced, and I think it looks different, almost like its a new move. Well, happy practicing and best wishes!

These are great ideas…. think I will borrow them! Helps you track your progress and set goals. BTW: I now listen to music differently too…. I hear a really good song and think of pole moves that would go great with it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Yep… I feel that way A LOT!!! Like chemgoddess1, I too have very inflexible shoulders. I have been a tennis player, runner, triathlete my whole life, all of which involve very forward and rounded movements and let’s face it: my body may never allow me to do the iguana. To say that I have accepted that would be a lie; rather, I just work on other things and wait for that time to come. If it doesn’t, hopefully maturity and common sense will have set in by then! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif From all the sports I have done my whole life (and still do!), my body is just accustomed to that style which means, for me, tight hamstrings also (also can’t do the rockstar spin, can’t do the spilts, and starfish: totally forget it!). But it is something I think we all struggle with. I’m sure you are still a very beautiful and talented dancer! Keep working on what you know and practice making it better and better, and putting it in combos… You rock! Best wishes!

  • Those guys are total D-Bags… You rock. Wish I coulda been there….I would have tipped you! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif But seriously, yay for you and for having such a great attitude!

I am an endurance athlete as well and I have been dealing with a hamstring strain for about a year. My strain took me out of my second half Ironman that I was training for last year. They can linger, and if you don’t take care of it, it can wreck your world. With high hamstring strains, you are suceptible to avulsions (pulling the bone off) if you are not careful, and require surgery to fix it. Listen to your PT: take it easy and with massage, so some light stretching but I suggest stretching after you get pain under control… lots of PTs are different. For me personally: I forced myself to take time off and got my pain under control (about a week or so). Gradually I worked myself into walking and did LOTS of pool workouts before I dare got back on the bike or started running or dancing. I did stretching (surprise! stretching works!) and then after a few more weeks I did some LIGHT strength training consisting of dead lifts with light weight (gradually increasing weight) and bridging with my feet on an exercise ball. If you aren’t used to the ball, start with your feet on the floor before you progress to an unstable surface. This type of injury takes time and patience, two things I do not have. To this day if I navigate away from stretch/strength, my hamstring reminds me of it. Do yourself a favor and treat it properly right away. Best wishes!

All of these are good ideas…. I too have very dry skin and it’s sooo annoying! Here’s what I have been doing: After my shower, I mist my body with baby oil (I pour it in a small spray bottle, that way it doesn’t spill everywhere) and rub it in. Then I rub on some Oil of Olay Quench lotion. Sometimes I have to put on another layer of lotion. If I wait several hours, I’m not too slippery; I make sure I clean my pole more frequently. Or I practice before I shower, so more oils have been produced on my skin. It sucks because I like hot showers, and my Doc told me to use lukewarm water. Well, that doesn’t happen in the winter, so I layer on lotion. Some people use vaseline, but I find that’s too greasy even for me. I also notice that my body gets used to certain types of lotion, so I switch between Olay Quench, Aveeno with oatmeal (Walmart has an offbrand), and Eucerin (also off brand at Walmart). Unfortunately, my skin likes more expensive brands, but to avoid dry skin misery you gotta just do it sometimes. Also, Gold bond makes some good stuff. Good luck!

I wear a 7.5 in athletic shoes, but in heels I wear a size down. In pleaser and ellie, I buy a 6. And I am very pro-ankle strap… I too, would have dogs with heels stuck in them, broken pictures, windows, walls… you get it. I look at it as a safety feature for the rest of your house.
