MemberDecember 25, 2012 at 1:51 pm in reply to: What part of “Studio Veena lessons” did Santa not understand ?Well…..considering the fact that when I first started classes I asked my hubby if he had seen my dance bag once when she was over…so naturally she asked “What type of dance ?” I said “uhhh…modern ?” ” Oh..You mean like Zumba ?”……”yes – like Zumba”
LOL…at least we have progressed into “aerial” – I just tend to focus on silks and lyra – avoiding the “P word”
Putting Veena lessons and some AA DVDs on my list was my way of “coming out of the closet”….oh well….guess my secret is still safe !

That is pretty much how we do it….I think my 2 year old DD gets more pole time than I do though ! LOL I’m still a little limited to after bed or during nap times since my DD won’t leave me or the pole alone and I don’t want either of us getting hurt but we do have silly spin & wiggle dance time…mostly jumping about and rolling on the floor 🙂
Its reassuring that I’m not being a “bad mommy”….My kids refer to it as “the workout pole” and if you ask my 6 year old what we do he will say “we’re staying healthy and having fun getting strong muscles” 🙂

PoleGal – you might want to check the formats on the disks…I’ve had relatives who have bought DVDs over here in the States which haven’t worked when they get back to the UK because they aren’t compatible with their players. Would hate to see that happen to anyone else…. especially with pole DVDs – such a downer to have one of those not work 😉

Not all the time because I have little ones that love to hang out with me while I practice and since they know it as “working out” I try to keep the sexy to a minimum and no heels. However when I’m at the studio (we teach barefoot but I’m trying to bring back heels) after class or having sexy time to myself after they’re in bed I LOVE my shoesies….if you’re trying to dance on carpet – try a piece of clear packing tape on the sole, reduces the friction, helping you pirouette & slide better. I like heels when Im alone more than anything because no one is around to see those “bambi on ice” monents and …but when doing the shoe slides & circles with the AA floor work DVD in your living room…if you have a giant picture window remember to close your blinds….because I’m pretty sure my neighborhood thinks I spend all day in panties & platforms !

To clarify – Im looking for a pair of platforms….probably no higher than a 6″ heel with a 2″ toe…Thank you 🙂

So – garage gals – where are you all located and how do you deal with the elements ? I’ve got a heater that makes it kind of tolerable when its around 30- 40 outside but much lower. Than that and I’m afraid I’ll end up stuck to my pole like that kid in “A Christmas Story” and anything above 75 makes the garage a sauna…great for stretching and yoga, bad for grip. And if its raining…humid as hell and I might as well forget it…Southwest Ohio is too damn temperamental with the weather !
Can’t wait to move ! Big kitchen & pole space are my MUST haves !! LOL

Just looked at your picture and you can’t even tell that’s a garage ! Very nice ! Maybe I’ll add screens to my Christmas list….I don’t like my space as much as I want to…just because it feels so….ugh…I don’t even know what it feels like….but for me trying to get in my zone & do anything while looking at a lawn mower, totes of old kids clothes & a bunch of camping gear is super distracting and just not working. LOL
-
Ohhhh….good stuff ! Thanks ! Does it slip out of place at all ? My garage is poured & polished concrete…very very slippery – and one of the main reasons ive hardly poled at home since Dad helped build a ceiling brace for my Christmas present last year 🙁
I suppose I could get a few sheets of the flooring and expand my area to the corner…Ive got a 6×6 square in the middle of the garage right now…or put some rug grip strips under it. Also did you put the pole on top of it or cut a hole in the center ? -
I’m banished to the garage as well… my husband is convinced my x-pole will wreck the textured ceilings and the only room we don’t have a ceiling fan in the living room….and even then between furniture and kids I doubt I’d get much accomplished…. but that’s another discussion. LOL
What I did to cover the ugly unfinished walls was to get king sized flat sheets from Goodwill and yard sales (If youre really a perfectionist – which i wish i had the time to be you could buy light colors and dye them all to match) and staple them into the beams. I have found some mirrors (again goodwill/yard sales) that I’ve just propped up with the intentions of hanging once I do some insulation (Ohio = cold). When my local church does their Christmas rummage (noticing a theme here ? LOL) I want some lights to wrap around the rafters.
Floorwise – I have those snap togethermats but they do catch my toes and shoes are iimpossible. Nice for stretching though. Looking into other things…thought about just sweeping and moping really well but since I share my space with the lawn mower, all the kids bikes & junk it wouldn’t stay dirt free for long at all….I don’t want to do a rug because it will slip…don’t want to stick that plastic tile down…though about sticking tiles to a piece of sheet rock and getting my dad to drill it into the floor in a few places to keep it from shifting which could easily be fixed when we sell with a quick skim of concrete filler.
I’ll try to post some pictures later…. its delightfully tacky and pretty half assed but its still better than no pole at all !

Do you have a local YMCA? I pay $75/month for the family (but it could be less depending on income) and they offer 6 free training sessions plus have trainers available if you need help. My Y has some awesome Yoga classes which have really improved my flexibility and balance. There is also a program that the Y calls “Move 2 Loose”…basically its 2 sessions a week for 12 weeks in a group-x environment. …it costs about $150 depending on your location and if youre a Y member or not. Its not one on one but it gives me accountability because my self motivation is crap and still allows me money to budget for pole stuff. Might be another option to look in to….

Sorry to get a bit long winded in my post….forgot to mention Etsy. It is like eBay but for all hand made items (you won’t find computer parts or potato chips shaped like the Virgin Mary like you do on EBay)
Regarding eBay safety – always shop sellers with high ratings and positive feedback. PayPal is very secure and to take it one step further use a credit card not a debit card or bank account information. That way in the highly UNLIKELY event your card information gets compromised you have the protection of your bank’s fraud policies. When I get a minute I’ll try to message you some more sites that might be helpful or at least provide some corset eye candy…..and all this corset talk is making me stare longingly at my patterns and fabric stash…..*sigh*
Good Luck and lets us know how you get on!

To avoid a lengthy post I think my best advice is to do what YOU want….I don’t think anyone was insinuating that getting a custom made corset would be your only or even best option based on many considerations. Budget often being the big one. Having a custom corset is definitely a luxury and perhaps it is on your list of “some day when I can afford it” dreams. I completely understand where you are coming from in terms of finances – I stay at home with our 3 kids, my husband took a 30% pay CUT and his ex wife managed to get her child support raised so its not even in our budget to buy materials for me to make my own corsets if I wanted to. I’m collecting old prom dresses from yard sales to make my girls mermaids for Halloween but is actually been a fun hunt….anyways I’m getting off topic…
Not all corsets are designed to be “tight laced” and while there are a few people who go to that extreme most of us don’t – as there are the obvious health dangers involved. You always hear the stories on how uncomfortable corsets are, how restrictive, how this how that…bad bad bad but in my experience those come from corsets that are not properly fitted. I can wear mine all day and be more comfortable in them than I am in a bra. I’m not saying a pre-made corset can not fit well since there are so many styles and different options available but it really can be trial and error – especially with internet shopping. Check the return policies and their measurement guides. Normally corsets are bought small to accommodate a modest 2-3 inch reduction…for example if you are a 34″ bust – order a 30″. But there are some companies that take that into account already so be sure to double check what they recommended based on your measurements. It depends on what style you are looking for but you mentioned being short waisted- some of the “long line” corsets that are designed to extend over the hips might be too long…..If in doubt shoot an email to the customer service department for some guidance and if you don’t like their response or don’t feel comfortable with them its simple – don’t do businesses with them.
I think what we were all trying to say is that if you could, a custom corset would really be the way to go….too many times we have seen people try to save a bit of money up front by ordering something then wishing they had just waited it out and paid the extra for a custom. We all know what joy a proper corset can be and would hate to see anyone soured on that from a bad experience.
In a nut shell it sounds like you know what you want and are willing to do your home work. Keep in mind that a lot of cheap costume corsets made of plastic will be popping up near Halloween- not that there is anything wrong with those. (I have one and although its not as supportive and well fitted as my others it served its purpose to have feathers and sequins stuck to it as part of a costume)
Above all, like I said to begin with, be happy with whatever choice you make.
