That link doesn't work for me. I think maybe because of privacy settings? Not sure. Yes I think I might just end up getting fans on the slightly cheaper side, because investing a lot is silly at this point, and get some kind of embellishments. Most likely some sparkle and peacock feathers. Right now, I am just waiting to hear back from some inquiries to different sites to shop the prices. To me, its important that I like them, because its really part of the mystique, but also important that I don't feel bad spending the money on them. I cant wait for the fans!

Thanks! I, too, am easily distracted by shiny things. 🙂 For me, sometimes costuming is the only reason to see a movie, and its well worth it!

hehehe well, it might be a few months… years? in the making. I am the type of person to get started on something like this… and then fall off for a bit when things get crazy (I am making a pretty long distance move at the end of the summer). But I hope to create something that could be performed. I currently do not have an event/show to create for, so… this is just something I want as a hobby, because I think fan dance is so beautiful and mesmerizing.
And i still want to see that movie! I know its not reviewed well, but… its Burlesque! 🙂

I definitely ended up just writing the stretching routines down and ultimately memorizing them, because its also just easier for me to stretch without having to watch or follow along. Sometimes, I just need a little bit more time in a particular stretch, or I am going to skip a stretch, etc. While I understand that licensing music can be tricky/expensive, the repetitive nature of the songs drives me a little crazy in the stretching DVDs. The floorwork/sexy fundamentals DVDs have similar music, but since the music enhances the movements, I find it much less distracting from the DVDs' overall goals. I really do like the info in those newer DVDs!

I love that video of Karol 🙂 My concern with the 18×34 fans is that they would be too small for me for a classic burlesque strip-tease style number. While those fans looked great with Karol's number, I am, relative to Karol, a giant. I have been playing around with a set of fans that is acrylic staved and about 30×54, as well as a bamboo staved set about the same size. They definitely require a lot of hand strength, but once I get it, I think I am going to like that larger size. It will however, definitely take some getting used to, thats for sure!

Cool! Thanks for that info. I did contact fancy feather and I think I might go through her. Is there a reason people like bamboo staves so much? Is it just a visual thing? I have tried both and acrylic are lighter but the staves are bigger. Hmmm. I am still waiting on pricing. I think I might have to let go of the peacock accents, they are driving the price up, but I love them!

O yeah, also wanting the fans to be able to open and close, because I want to be able to incorporate that into the dancing. Maybe thats silly though, I am most definitely an amateur when it comes to fan dancing.

Thanks so much for the info! I keep thinking I want to just make my own, but then I get carried away with the feathers, because buying fans feather by feather is not cheap when you aren't wholesale pricing them. Plus shipping to Hawaii is always insane.

Bahahaha! Now that you mention it… 🙂 Puts me in mind of a good comedy piece.

I have noticed through my classes and learning things on youtube, and talking with other dancers that a lot of floorwork moves do not have names, or each person doing the move has their own name for it and the move ends up having 5 or more names. Are you needing to know the names because you would be teaching the moves once you have gotten them down? I find that typically real exotic dancer moves have no names and are often the product of just floor dancing a lot, especially when tired from pole work but still having to dance. Ie, go to the source if you dont mind going to strip clubs! 🙂 Especially if you pick things up quickly after seeing them.

I would hate to see performance enhancing substances become the norm for our sport. I do think that if it gains a typical global platform (ie on the scale of the Olympics) one should expect to see it occur. Because that sort of fierce competition tends to bring out a do anything to win attitude. Its intense. As a former NCAA athlete, I can tell you there are many substances that I was randomly drug tested for, most of which are legal substances but that you are not allowed to have above certain levels in your body. Caffeine is one of them. In fact, if one regularly imbibes (or over-imbibes) in all those many many energy drinks, you just might fail a 'drug test' and caffeine would only be one of the substances that is a problem. I think people commonly think that steroids are the typical 'drugs' that athletes get busted for, but in reality, there are a lot of things out there that enhance performance and most of them are legal substances.

a mesmerizing ring piece…
I don't train ring, but a couple of women in our company do. As far as spinning goes, pay attention and invest in good hardware. Swivels are not all made equal. If spinning is something you would like to do, a good swivel is invaluable.

I use my 'dance name' as yet another aspect to my costuming and character as a burlesque and aerial performer. My real self is shy. She is NOT a dancer, but someone who pretends to. She doesn't perform for anyone. Because she is a nerdy scientist with no real dance training who is too worried about maintaining a professional persona to be anything other than under the radar.
Alice B. Heartless on the other hand, wears animal print and lace. She has no problem staring an audience in the face and owning her moves. She'll eat you alive. THIS is why I have a dance name. Because it lets me be whoever I want and it makes dancing much less vulnerable. For me, it's one of the only ways for me to perform at all. And I LOVE performing.
The reason this has nothing to do with stripping for me, is quite simply because I don't strip. Never have, most likely never will. And that's just a personal choice for myself, one that I don't bother even pretending to make for other people.

MemberJune 11, 2012 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Alethea Austin Stretching/Your Pole Practice RoutineIn the DVD she says to stretch 5 times a week to gain flexibility and 3 times a week to maintain. I think it all comes down to your own body, and what your goals are. If gaining a lot of flexibility is a priority for you, then you will have to put in a considerable amount of time and effort. If maintaining what you already have is fine, or if you want to just get into stretching because you like doing it, but have no specific stretching goals, then spending less time per day or week would be ok. Its always good to slowly work your way into any fitness regimen, but again, it depends on your body 🙂

CapFeb, I think you would just need to contact DVK and see what the shipping options are. As its local, I just dont have that information because I don't really need it for once! However, the tins are not very large, and I think would lend themselves well to shipping as they aren't glass or anything. I bet the easiest way would be to contact through the facebook page linked above.
