  • I leave the PS multi-piece on spinning all the time. Never had an issue with it coming down. The plate is very grippy, but like ANY and EVERY pole, you really need to check it prior to use, ie some times things start moving, unscrewing, carpet settles, etc.  PS cases on the other hand, have never seemed to be worth the money. Granted my last case was a free gift with the new extreme pole when it came out a few years back, but it is considerably more trouble than it was worth, and in using it, have incurred damage to the pole. And it is not the hard case that I see on their site now, so I don't think they sell it any more.

    Anybody seen Lola Frost vids on Youtube? There is a great one where she is performing a menswear-inspired strip tease (its so awesome!)  to that quintessential Portishead song, and one of her pasties ends up coming off. Since she's such a sassy confident performer, she just ends up taking the other one off, flicking it to the side, and strolling off at the end of her number. Granted, its burlesque, so, shes not wearing a whole lot anyways, but still, its a great recovery for a costume malfunction.

    I had no dance or gymnastic background before pole. I was athletic, but not remarkably so. I was a thrower in college, specialty javelin, and could barely string two pullups together. Since I started pole, I am in much better shape over all and much stronger, though I haven't set foot in a weight room in years.

    I used to love running.  There was a time in my life when I NEEDED it. For my own sanity.  I couldn't wait for Saturdays when I combined my long distance and hill training midday and would just run it out around Diamond Head. I got out of the habit kind of around the same time I started teaching/rehearsing aerial so much more and found a job that I liked, and haven't gotten back into it. Because I can't be tired during aerial!  And my sanity is no longer in immediate danger, I guess. 😉

    To me stage presence is a total commitment by the dancer to her dance; being in the moment with herself, her partner the pole, the floor, the audience, and combining her music, costuming, and movements in such a way that it all melds together. I don’t think external vs internal focus is the stage presence but simply an aspect. An internally focused dancer can be just as mesmerizing and awe-inspiring to me as an externally focused dancer. And stage presence can definitely be seen even in the lazy day freestyle choreo.

    I have always struggled with comparing myself to other people in pretty much everything (piano, every sport I have ever done, school, pole/aerial, etc). I am trying to battle that because it is neither positive nor productive for me. Recently, I came across a very fitting Kurt Cobain quote (I find most of his quotes are pretty silly and affected), however;

    "Wanting to be someone else is a waste of the person that you are."

    has really struck home for me. Let's not forget it! 🙂

    I have the rumble rollers, a high density black roller, a cardboard roller (yikes by far the most dense!), the bead stick, and I also use tennis balls, and I would have to say that tennis balls can be the most intense. If you are just beginning, I would go for something solid but not too intense.  I would say rumble rollers are not for beginners unless you are of the more masochistic type. Or just know that pain will not be something that keeps you from rolling. Like anything else, you want to begin at the beginning and work into doing it because rolling takes a little time to make sense to your body and there is definitely pain associated with it. The roller I use the most is the black high density extra firm roller by isokinetics. I have the 6" diameter by 36" length. Definitely avoid the white rollers or other not firm rollers. I have found that if I actually use them, they quickly lose shape.

    Maybe search different types of dye on a site like amazon and look through the comments/reviews? Not totally helpful, but I recently dyed some canvas slippers for a performance piece and what do you know, one of the trims on the slippers was synthetic and did not take dye well at all. In the end it did not matter, but synthetics can be really hard to dye evenly, etc. My simple/basic research has not led me to any one product just yet. But would definitely be interested in what others have to say!

    One thing I also think is really important and it was mentioned a little bit above is this… Decide on a costume/outfit way earlier than you think you need to, run the choreo entirely in said outfit (plus the undergarments/double side tape/and whatever hairstyle), and be sure to have given yourself enough time prior to competition to get a different outfit if it doesnt work or if you dont like it.  Absolutely DO NOT be wearing anything for the first time at a comp.  Issues you have never thought of will show up.

    I have seen people leave costume to the last minute and then its really stressful when it doesn't work or doesn't fit right. Plus if it had to ship, there is always that stress of it not showing up on time….etc.  Also, make sure you have backups, especially if you are dancing in shoes.  Buckles break a lot, etc and it always seems like it happens at the worst of times. Bring a little sewing kit with you the day of the competition, too.

    I really do feel like costuming can be immensely stressful, especially when it goes wrong. But with a little planning, costuming can be almost entirely stress-free. There's so much other stuff that will be stressful and cannot be alleviated with planning, so taking the time to get that organized is well worth it!

    April 10, 2012 at 3:16 pm in reply to: X pole or lil mynx?or Platinum Stages….so confused?

    I have also used all three poles pretty regularly, I perform occasionally on PS, I have owned both PS and Xpole, and my most recent training and some rehearsing have been on Lil Mynx.

    I think in cases such as these, you just need to do your research as much as possible. They all look great on paper, but there will always be something about the pole that you think you might not like. You will most likely never know until you are able to try it out.

    My personal experience is that a fully functional and in working-order PS pole is the best for me. However, PS doesnt always get it right the first time.  I tend to feel that Xpole set up can be needlessly fussy (but typically has worked for me just fine) and that I do not feel comfortable giving a Lil Mynx my full weight with that plastic upper cuff and the potentially sliding of the foot. But I tend to love spinny mode and I like throwing spins really hard on static.

    That said, I have worked on all these poles and every last one of them adequately fulfilled a need (the need to pole!  https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)   I was never unable to do things on a lil mynx or xpole or ps once they were set up and ready to go. They were all good poles to learn on.

    Maybe think about the portability that you need, whether you want a spin option, and what metal/finish you would like. Some of the poles will automatically not fit your criteria and can then be taken off the list. Hooray process of elimination!
