Another option to remember with small rooms (having a camera with wide-angle capabilities would definitely be the best starting point) would be to also have full size mirrors. That way, you (your actual body) may not be within the frame of the camera, but your reflection in the mirror will be. This can make filming in a small room possible where it otherwise would be impossible to consistently stay in the frame while dancing and moving around. Mirrored closet doors can sometimes be picked up for quite cheap at goodwill, on craigslist, or at a construction repurposing warehouse. Mirror tiles could also be an option.

Ballistic stretches utilize fast movements/drops/kicks to bring a joint beyond its typical range of motion. Alethea uses them in the DVD after her splits on back stretching and during the gravity middles stretching on the wall. Don't worry, she calls out that she uses them, so there shouldn't be any confusion.

I have both sets of DVDs, and I like them both a lot. They don't do the exact same exercises, so they can definitely companion quite well. One thing to note, Felix's flexibility DVD does not use a pole, while Alethea's DVDs do. Depending on what I want, its good and bad. I just got a pole for Christmas so until then I just had to try to modify some of Alethea's stretches to a wall, which was difficult for some of them and I used Felix's more at that time.

While the content is great on both Alethea's and Felix's, there is a considerable difference in the production. There are lots of little errors in Alethea's production/editing, which could be attributed to flying under the radar during the issues that she encountered in finishing up that project. However, that said, the content is pretty fantastic. She does recommend ballistic stretching, though, which seems odd given that everything I had read recently about flexibility says that is an injurious method of stretching. I am not an expert by any means though. I like that Felix's dvd seems very comprehensive with stretching and she seems really familiar with proper stretching technique. Her dvd is really pretty and pulled together very well production-wise.

I think that Alethea's dvds will get you to a specific flexibility faster, ie your splits or flexible back, and Felix's dvd seem more general in flexibility. In choosing one or the other, knowing your specific flexibility goal would be important.  I love that I have both. I like them each for different reasons. 🙂

My Veena name is the same as my aim name and youtube name. Corby Hall was a building at my university, and choosing O'Connor was a bit like using "Smith" there, a good generic Irish name. I wanted to have an Irish name. So there it is. My real name is Kate.

Something to maybe think about to, though it may not matter if you are already comfortable in heels, is maybe consider a boot. I have found that fit can be easier to get right for me in boots and the ankle support can be helpful. However they can be more expensive and are a different feel when poling since the boots themselves can provide grip on the pole. But they are so dang sexy!

I have had this same dilemma, where I really wanted to be able to pin down my "style". This is mostly only something I care about when I am trying to choreograph to music for a performance, because I want to really capitalize on what I do best and what is good for an audience to watch me perform. I am VERY type A like that.

In the same way that I have body dysmorphia, I think I have a style dysmorphia as well. I can't explain my style! And to some degree, I really do believe that it's quite futile to worry/stress about it (though believe me, I have. Many times over). Whether you know it or not, your style is there if you are into the music and dancing. I think that other people may have an easier time of describing my style than I ever will. It comes down to really feeling the music and when you are dancing and poling, just moving  naturally.

You never know, sometimes "messing up" a move that you have learned a specific way can become a trademark styling of your own. Or just choose two moves and really work on how to transition between them, the more different they are, the more likely you are to come up with something interesting and unique that your body does naturally. Style isn't necessarily huge scary fast moves or languid flexible moves. Style is how you present your dancing, how your body moves, so you definitely get to choose it. I think transitions and presentation define style more than specific moves do.

This is a really fun thread! corbyOconnor was my AIM name back in the day… and I have just never changed it for other online names because it was easy for me to use.  It's pretty much completely based on college. Corby was one of the campus buildings, and O'Connor went with it well. I just liked how it all sounded together.  It's often mistaken for my real name, which I didn't think about when I set it up… it's totally a real name, but not mine. I have always wanted a good name that I could use as a stage name, but I have never been able to come up with something that I thought really worked for me.

While I love that people are able to share so much through facebook and so easily too, I would definitely caution for people to be careful with the levels of privacy. Know what your levels of privacy are set to, and check them anytime there is a big change in Facebook design. I had a totally weird moment not long ago when talking with my mom on the phone. She had been Facebooking potential hires. MY MOTHER. Who doesn't get what 'poking' is on Facebook. If you are amid a job hunt, know that even people who are not typically computer savvy are totally capable of facebooking and googling you. And Facebook is notorious for having issues with privacy settings.

Chem, thanks so much for the info… I have been wanting to buy a new pole, and since I needed a multipiece pole, I wanted to go with Xpole, but have been really kind of nervous about the things I had been hearing about the xjoints. I think I just might put it on the Christmas List now. 🙂

So has the new joint corrected the problems the joints were having with turning inside the pole?

Alayna Stroud of Cirque Noir/Bow & Sparrow/cirque Du Soleil in SF uses a swinging metal pole.  You can see it here:

Its kind of funny, just a few days ago there was a thread about different aerial apparatus, and I posted that link there after looking it up for the first time in a long long time. I am pretty sure that aerial artists in general are a bit crazy (in a good way) and I love the whole notion of invented apparatus and combined apparatus. Like Jenyne and Amy Raven's pole/lyra. If you havent seen that video, its here…

and because I just can't stop there… ticktock dance in Seattle, Washington, created apparatus and then built the show around them, the concept being three women living in a house at different times… so the apparatus are a bed, a stove in the kitchen, and a bathtub, among others. I love the concept of this and wish I could see the whole show!
