Hi!
I could teach you those things… If you were in Majorca https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_confused.gif
But I agree with you, a back handspring is very scary to learn on your own. I know a series of educative exercises that would bring you to learn it. You would need a very thick mat that allows you to land directly on your back or stomach ( so nice and thick.. the gymnastics ones). And the foam thingy you were talking about is good to have too.
But maybe you should start with the back walkover. You know this move where you smoothly go put your hands on the floor by bending to the back ( like going in a bridge from standing) and your legs follow in a splits position? This is a nice start to learn to trust your arms when you do a move to the back. And you could learn it at home with the help of your sofa, your bed or a wall.
Did you try to look for circus schools in your area? They often have adult classes ans they teach acrobatics… Maybe that could work https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif
What do you think?

I totally agree. The pole dancing community is so supportive. I think it’s because we’re having so much fun dancing and learning, we can only share positively. Welcome! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

Hi Hilary!
If you come by Montreal one day, let’s do a little pole jam together.
Welcome to Studio Veena!

We use to do a lot of these stretches when I was at the circus school. It is very good if you want to improve a lot. But you have to be careful with them. If your body is not properly placed or if you’re not strong enough, you can hurt yourself.
But what is this? It’s Big Brother, but for circus artist or what? Interesting…

I found using heat really helps the back, but not as soon as its been injured as it makes more blood flow in the area.
Using heat is really not recommended for this case though. Heat makes the pain disappear for a little while, but it also promotes inflammation which is not good when we are trying to heal. We want to decrease the inflamation (redness, swelling, pain) as fast as possible and you do that with ice. Heat certainly feels better than ice, but the best would be to stick with ice.
Take care!

Hey Tegra!
I can give you some advice on that. I went to a professional circus school and a lot of students / artists get back problems. I was also once injured in my lower back… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif
First, if it is really bad go see a physiotherapist. We had one at the school for dealing with all the injuries that happened in the school. Some of them are specialized for athletes or dancers.
Next, put some ice on your lower back. For 20 minutes NOT MORE than once every 2 hours. Do it often, it will help in your healing process.
Now don’t think about stretching. You need to tone up your abs. Your lower back was injured because your abdominal muscles were not supporting your back properly. You need to do abdominal muscle exercises that will strengthen your deeper abdominal muscles, the ones that are right against your spinal column, but on the belly side.
Pilates is very good for this. The pointer I can give you here is to do your abdominal exercises with your belly button completely in. As deep in your belly as you can get it. This will target your deeper abdominal muscles.
Last thing is to be very careful to your back from now on. As your back heals you will feel like you can be less careful with it. That’s a mistake that a lot of people do… including me https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif Healing a back is long. Take care of it and keep our abdominal muscles strong from now on!
I give preventive tips on the web site I am working on: http://www.poledancingexpression.com. My site is still young and still "empty" , but they’re still good tips! I will put more in the future. It’s work in progress…
I hope this helps!

What I do on the video is called simple wheel, single wheel or cyr wheel. The last name, Cyr wheel, is like that because the man who first popularized it is called Daniel Cyr and he wants people to remember him… I guess. But I once offended him by calling it simple wheel while talking to him… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif hihi!
I do get dizzy when I go fast but your body actually get used to it. When I just started, I would feel dizzy in my bed before going to sleep. I felt as if I was in a boat, but worst. But then it disappeared and now I only get dizzy for 2 seconds after I get down from the wheel. No one notice when I’m performing. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cool.gif
Thank you again everyone and it is so nice to see all of you doing your thing on the pole. It makes me happy! Very inspiring!

Obviously, a lot of these comments are from ignorant and closed minded people. I choose not to get mad at people like that anymore. It is a waste of my precious energy. Why get mad when I can use that energy to do something that makes me happy… say like do some pole!
But somehow it has become cool to bash other people down. It’s a subtle way to be violent. Now who is being negative???
I hope you’ve been over it for a long time now Jungle Cat. Do your thing!!!!
