I love this thread, so interesting! I am a physician (Radiologist), mom to 2 girls and have been poling for a little over 2 years. I’m performing in my first competition in Sept (in Masters category since I’m 40) and have to use stage name ’cause I don’t share my love of poling with the other docs I work with (mostly men). Hope none of them are in the audience lol! My former jobs in college include bar tending and casino dealer.

I turned 40 this year and am as strong (if not stronger) and definitely more flexible than I was in my 20's, thanks to 2 years of poling. I've been fortunate to find a great studio and supportive group of women (and a few men) – many of whom are 10-20 years younger than me and few who are older than I am.  I consider them my close friends and age doesn't seem to matter in the studio 🙂

You know if your doctor hasn’t heard of it (or worse scoffs at it) it’s not necessarily surprising. I am a physician actually and it wasn’t around when I was in med school (I’m also not an Ortho doc but honestly most of the ones I know know a lot about surgery and not much else about alternative non surgical therapies). You might try asking a chiropractor or your physical therapist 🙂 I have not personally tried acupuncture but I think it’s worth trying. Good luck!

Has your therapist used any laser therapy on your shoulder? I am currently rehabbing my shoulder injury and while rest and all those little strengthening exercises with the band helped some, I can't believe how much better I am feeling after just two (so far) laser treatments – it helps speed tissue healing. I've had the deep tissue ultrasound before on my neck (therapeutic not the imaging kind), and I feel that the laser is WAY more effective. Take it slow and rebuild your strength, and keep up your rotator cuff strengthening exercises (believe me I KNOW it's frustrating to not be able to do things you used to, but as you get stronger your body will remember what to do). I honestly don't know how much that sort of treatment costs (mine is free since he (my friend) is Chiropractor who owns his own equipment, lucky for me!) Anyway it's worth looking into if you haven't already tried it. Hope you heal quickly!

Wow! What a powerful video, tears came to my eyes (not even sure why exactly but it was very touching). Great idea Veena, it's so easy to get caught up in what we don't like about ourselves, our appearance, our ability etc… it's nice to focus on the positive for a change.

    I love:

    1. My butt in cheeky booty shorts, not bad for 40

    2. My hair

    3. My strong back

    Pole related:

    1. I love that I'm finally able to do the splits again (which I haven't been able to do since high school), and have been able to perform many other tricks that I NEVER dreamed I'd be able to do when I started.

    2. I love that poling has made me stronger than all those years in the gym. I'm as strong as I've ever been, now when I go to the gym I find myself doing only strengthening and flexibility exercises that will help me in my poling lol. I'm up to 10 overhand pullups 🙂

    3. I love that I have a whole new group of amazing friends that I wouldn't have met if not for poling!

    4. Sorry had to add this one, I love that even though many of my friends and family know I pole, it's still pretty much my own little secret at work (I'm a physician).  Honestly at this point if someone asked me what I do to stay in shape I'd tell them but it just doesn't come up. Doctors (some not all) can be pretty boring 🙂

You might consider making one (a pad). I went to Home Depot and bought a square piece of black rubber flooring mat like you would use for a home gym and just cut a circular piece out w/ a razor blade. It is lower profile than their pad and works just fine, also cheaper 🙂

I had one of the older X poles (not w the X joint, but the kind that attached by screwing the threaded bolt together). When it was on carpet it fell on me, twice, two different gashes on my wall, thankfully none on me! I tightened it all the tine but the carpet pad was so thick I just couldn’t get it right I guess . It eventually broke when two grown men decided to fly around it like a merry-go-round at a party 🙁 Now I have a lil mynx, and a wood floor, lol. I think x poles are great though, I will probably eventually get another one w the optional permanent ceiling mount lol
