Thank you so much for your responses! I confess I wasn’t expecting such a warm welcoming (specially because my pole friends and teachers don’t really get what I’m saying) but I’m blown away by what you’ve told me.

It’s wonderful to see that I’m not alone in this. I find it pretty hard to even look for videos on youtube so I appreciate any suggestions (I’ll definitely check out the pole art helsinki videos, Melt, thanks!)

I’m gonna go ahead and share some of my song choices and I’d really like to get to know you better by hearing some of your songs!
My first choreography ever was to Closer by Kings of Leon, which is widely considered a sexy song (it kinda is), but for me, lyrically, it’s heartbreaking. I tried to get inspiration from the idea of a vampire awakening after aeons of time, to find out that the woman he loved had died and he had the burden of immortality to live without her… Pretty sad.

I’m currently trying to dance to Do I wanna know, by the Arctic Monkeys. Again, super sexy song, but also about obssession, craving, begging, chasing after someone and, mostly, wondering if that person wants you back (and not being sure if you REALLY wanna know the answer). I’m trying to express myself with rage, desire and helplessness at the same time.

My other favorite songs to freestyle to are Breezeblocks by Alt+J (also about obssession), Elephant Gun by Beirut (very circus-y, but also kinda sad…?), The last remaining light, by Audioslave, and Flightless bird american mouth by Iron&Wine.

    What are your tunes?

I’ll try and share a video of one of my freestyling sessions with you, hope to see you girls dancing as well!

PS: Do I see a trend? You melancholy folks with all these black and white profile pictures? LOL!

Thanks for the replies, girls! I’ll definitely try recording my moves and taking screenshots from the videos!
Maybe I’ll start posting them here to hear what you think! I found this community to be very supportive and active so I’m pretty happy to be here 🙂

This makes me kinda happy, actually. LOL
It’s so frustrating working with expectations, and different body types. I’ve been pole dancing for like, 8 months now, but only for the past 4 I started to take it a bit more seriously, and I want to progress so badly but my body keeps pulling me away from my objectives. I feel I’m a little overweight and I’m so insecure about the way I look on the pole, how I can’t get my body to go to the right positions…

This text got me thinking about working WITH my body limitations, not AGAINST them.

Thanks Lina for sharing with us 🙂

I keep my pole at my boyfriend’s house and everyone is pretty curious about it. It’s been awesome keeping it there, always up, so I have the chance to:

    1. Enlighten people about Pole Dancing, people that often think of it as ONLY an exotic dance, and not an exercise, artistic dance (I love every aspect of pole dancing but people are very prejudiced towards it) so this is a great conversation starter
    2. Any girl that sees it gets interested and I can convert them!!

So I would totally keep it up!
