First time I got on a spinny pole did a reverse grab and promptly flew off and into my wall LOL – slammed my knee, hip and arm all at once – not pretty…my ego and hip were both pretty bruised.

Second time I got on a spinny pole I had had a wee bit to drink the night before and………sushi…

let’s just say sake, sushi and upside down on a spinning pole is a REALLY REALLY BAD COMBO!!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_r.gif https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_puke_l.gif

needless to say I actually stayed away from spin mode for about 2 years – I’m a wuss lol

Me and spinny do not agree at all. I could not even imagine being upside down and spinning…..I would probably have the same response as you!

It took me almost a year and a half before I could do a boomerang without pain.

Look up samsara pilates online and on youtube….she has some really really really good explanations of body mechanics and why things hurt.

My biggest issue is forearm strength….it was not until I started targeting exercises that worked the forearms and wrists that I could do a boomerang without pain. It is also important to know that you really are not holding weight on the lower bracket….it is there to push you way from the pole. Try learning the move with the same type of grip you would use for a chair….basically fingers up.

If you look on youtube there are tons of videos (there may even be some on the powerball website). Basically you twirl your wrist…it is kind of hard to explain…but you will feel that gyroscope kick in. The faster it spins the more grip it takes for you to keep it in your hand. So not only are you using your forearm to keep the thing spinning, you are gripping to keep it from flying across the room. You can spin it clockwise or counterclockwise plus there are a bunch of other exercises you can do with it.

    Here are some videos

I want to try silks. I am not sure about the type of pole they have or teach but I am in the process of finding out!! I have always wanted to see what a Chinese pole is like but I am not sure if theirs is or not.

My biggest fall was when I was learning the caterpillar crawl and I was at home when it happened. Basically what happened was I pushed up and when I went to release my legs to reposition them my arms fatigued and totally failed. Somehow I managed to tuck myself so that I came down on my shoulder and rolled out of it. It could have been WAY worse if I fell on my head. I have also jammed my toes on numerous occasions and currently have a cut on my finger from my shoes when I was playing on a pole Saturday night.

I think it is really important to teach ways out of moves if something goes wrong.

The NSD is a 250 hz, they do not list them by rpm. Only the Dynaflex does as far as I know. Torque was more important to me than rpm since that is the force exerted when it spins.

This site compares the two. The NSD neons are 15000 rpm at 40 lbs torque. The Dynaflex is 18000 rpm at 40 lbs torque. I also have the NSD’s (in green and red) and they really work the crap out of my arm. I totally fell in love with the chrome one but could not see $130 for it.

For some reason I thought that I read somewhere that brass poles are shipped with a coating on them that needs to be removed. Can anyone confirm this? I cannot access Platinum Stages web site from work.

When I started out there were no classes in my area.

I think just the opposite…much of the beginner stuff can be learned from videos and the like, it is when you start getting into the advanced moves that I feel it is better to get to a studio. There are so many little nuances that simply cannot be taught via video and unless you are taping yourself you really cannot see where you may be having issues. I also like getting out amongst others that enjoy pole as much as I do.

Empy is the one that had suggested this thing a while back. I bought ours off of ebay. There are 2 manufacturers, dynaflex and nsd. I bought the nsd ones from a seller named powerball4all. When looking at them be sure that 1) you are getting an LED one (or neon) as they sell them with and without lights and 2) get the strongest one that you can afford right now. I got mine for $30 plus shipping.

Here is one of the conversations that was had on this site.

VB, I understand where you are coming from which is one of the reasons that I do not have a single video of me up. I have pics on facebook in a private gallery but then that even backfired on me (you cannot regulate who your friends may show pictures to if they happen to be over). I have been using this screen name forever and routinely run google searches on it. Just this past summer I had a couple that we knew from camping track us down and show up at our house. Kinda creepy in a way and I am still not completely sure how they pieced everything together.

I will have to agree that if someone wants to find you it is so easy to do now a days. Don’t know if you have ever heard of Zabasearch but I have even located people that way.

Do what you need to put yourself at ease. Unfortunately social networking has it’s dark side and that is exactly what you are dealing with right now.

BTW, I just went through and deleted a bunch of people on FB last week. I really don’t need to know what someone from high school that I have not had contact with in 20+ years is doing.

My issue is 2 fold, no breasts and no waist….I literally have a 3" space between my lower ribs and my hip bone, if that! They all end up looking like I am stuffed into a potato sack.

Pretty much every new move has produced interesting bruises.

I have not felt a "need" for grip products or gloves until this year and I have been at the for 2. The only reason I was looking at gloves was because I have been trying to get a split grip aysha and have been slipping down the pole. On Empy’s advice I got a powerball and now my grip is beyond belief. I still use a bit of my own magic powder just because stainless and cold weather tend to sweat but besides that I have no need.
