Here’s another link for history of Tango http://www.totango.net/sergio.html

What I love in that history is this line:
"A famous fashion designer had a fair amount of material of orange color that he could not sell. He decided to name the material’s color "Orange Tango"; he ran out of the cloth right away and had to order more."

And so these days we have the fizzy orange drink named Tango – or at least over my side of the world!!
You know when you’ve been Tango’d:

.. this ad was banned in ’92! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif

Oh, just thought of the fact that Tango might be named to be subtly similar to "Tang", which I believe is a US beverage. But it would be cooler if it were named after the dance Tango, considering the historical link with the color orange, and the scandalous nature of the drink Tango’s marketing campaign.. scandalous like the dance!!

    Just in case anybody’s interested:

So, I’ve just had a personal revelation!

Let me explain.. I’m a habitual barefoot or sneakers pole dancer, and I’ve always been shy of heels from the point of view of being perceived as sleazy or stripclub-ish (not that I personally have anything against the latter, it’s just that I have had to – and continue to have to – convince people long and hard that what I do is for fitness and fun and completely not just to "please my man!!")

But female ballroom dancers wear heels (e.g. Tango)! Hell, they sometimes wear skimpy, slinky costumes too! Yet ballroom dancing is (mainly) universally respected and perceived by most as an artform… an artform that can be racy and passionate, but is still seen as physically demanding and fairly respectable (I say "fairly" because it is usually not assumed that ballroom dancers are strippers or prostitutes by reputation, although it might be seen as "not a real job" in the same way that I was advised by countless narrow-minded folk not to go to art college because "art is not a real job, but more of a hobby"! And now here I am, a miserable Engineer with a PhD in the topic of boringsville, specializing in regretfulness.. but that’s another story for another day!!! ;-P )

Indeed, some styles of ballroom dancing appear to be dogged by (or happily evolved from?) a "sleazy" history – see this interesting article trying to explain the roots of Argentine Tango: http://www.history-of-tango.com/tango-origins.html, yet this particular style of dance has become accepted to the point that we don’t frequently hear of tango instructors and participants fighting to defend their work as reputable! Or do we? Maybe I’ve been living under a rock all these years!

Two conclusions that I must draw from my own rant…
    1. Perhaps we pole dancers should be strapping on our heels at any opportunity in the hope that pole dancing in heels will become just as accepted and respected as a well-heeled ballroom dance!! It does look pretty, if I’m honest about it!
    and
    2. (a) The presence of the male partner in ballroom dancing seems to defuse the idea that the dance objectifies/ exploits women/female sexuality.. therefore (b) men becoming involved in pole dancing is indeed a very positive thing, and (c) should there be a sub-genre of pole dancing involving one person from each gender utilizing the pole in some sort of synchronized choreography?

Point 2.(a): Is this the case, and if so, why? It’s strange, since the dude is usually in a very demure suit or shirt / trousers combo with the lady showing way more flesh!

Point 2.(c): Think there might be a clip of Fred ‘n’ Ginger swinging off of street lamps in a synchronized fashion which I would use to illustrate this but I’m finding it difficult to locate again on YouTube..

Apologies if these points have already been made here, but this thread has become so long and difficult to read through! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

And just one more thing.. since I’m always going on about doing PhDs.. somebody should do a PhD on Sexuality and Pole Dancing!! Anybody? Oh, if only I wanted to go anywhere near grad school again!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

For the drops thread.. I’ve always wondered if you could do a sliding drop whilst in Brass Monkey (maybe Funky Monkey), or Marley perhaps?

You’re thread reminded me I saw a brass monkey drop somewhere I couldn’t remember where but this morning it came to me…Karol does a brass monkey drop to a sit here at 1:17. Not a lide…but it’s from a brass monkey.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XE53-XkXIw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also received a private vid from someone who did a cross ankle release and dropped into a V-split (or boomerang) then BOUNCED back up to a brass monkey! Unfortunately I cannot share it as it was private but it was awesome the way she bounced down and back up again!

That drop from Brass Monkey is cool! I’ve been trying something similar myself lately!

WRT to the private vid.. that idea reminds me.. recently did a master class with a lady called Karen Chaudy and she does this trick where she handsprings and then drops into a boomerang style position. 0:50 in this vid:

To go back up again into handspring would be pretty cool!!

Woooooow!! StellarMotion, a twisted grip Aysha from shoulder mount with the princess grip…. Cant wait to try that!!!

I use the twisted grip to mount (not lift yet – I’d looove to be able to!!), and I really have never experienced a problem with it. Although I do see how it could be for some.. I’d imagine it’d be really dangerous to perform with a locked-out hyper-flexible elbow on the lower bracket!!

I’ve injured myself more than once doing the ordinary split grip either handspringing or cartwheeling, or, my ultimate nemesis.. split grip hanging bodywave or air walking! The damage is always to the wrist on the lower bracket for me!

Veena, I have to agree with your loving of shoulder mounts and dismounts! Following confusion watching your Jenyne tumble with the shoulder dismount, plus a bit of Holly Drop obsession… I did a Holly Drop finishing in shoulder dismount rather than Scorpio! It’s really fun!!

Still trying to get the mechanics of the Veena-style Jenyne tumble into my head!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

StellarMotion: Oh, and Deetron, a video might be really difficult, but I think if nothing else it would make a very entertaining photograph! I’ll try to get someone to take the picture, and I’ll post it on my profile. May be a while though.

Haha cool!!! We should have a "things I do whilst poling photography thread"!

I love an X-Pole y’all, but the sliding adjuster cover scares the bejaysus out of me.. the other day in my room of low ceilings I was doing an straight-leg hang to chopper invert on spinny mode – so then was spinning pretty fast – and when I shoved one of my legs up to grab the pole afterwards, my foot must have kicked the adjuster cover and it started sliding downwards towards my hands!! YYYYIiiiikkkkkeess!!! V. scary on spinny mode which is scary for me at the best o’ times!!!

Sometimes I used to leave off that adjuster cover because of exactly such scary situations! Now I seem to have broken the ring thing with the two snap-on thingies (sorry but anybody with an X-Pole will know what I mean), so I have to leave it off!!

Does the PS have an adjuster cover like that, or what happens otherwise?

Maybe the PS extreme or X-Pole expert (both bottom-loading) do away with this problem?

January 21, 2010 at 12:10 pm in reply to: Toe Cramps

Yes, yes! Double yes!!! I’ll be doing (what I think is a) cool pose when all my toes cramp up.. causing me to fall off the pole sometimes!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif It sucks!!!

My problem is from having very tight calves and (probably related) overpronation in running etc. Trying to point my toes in pole dancing seems to bring on the toe cramps!! I have to take a minute to stretch my calves deeply to get rid of it. Have had this problem since I was a kid!!! (obv. havent been pole dancing since was a kid, but always had toe, foot and calf cramps!!)

So, in my experience.. muscular imbalances in the legs and feet have a lot to do with toe / foot cramps. A chiropodist / podiatrist / physio visit might diagnose underlying imbalances.. then you can find exercises / stretches to try to sort it out!

I’m such a banana, I totally forgot about the magnesium tip! This thread has just reminded me once more to try to eat bananas!!!
